+SantiagoRaga1975 basically averages out to 20,6,6 and 2. great all around player. were it not for jordan- this guy would be remembered as the best 2 guard out there other than kobe and maybe wade. but i have him right up there. people forget- before jordans six rings, a lot of people had drexler neck and neck with mj- some even said he was better cos he was more of a team player and more well rounded. of course that fired jordan up which wasn't a good thing - but still - of the 14 years they shared in the nba- drexler was right there for half of them- much like t-mac and kobe.

he was classy and timid with a smile on his face as he played the game. from what I seen everyone loved Clyde. he had one of the best defenses and transition games I've ever seen. didn't get the press or acclaim he deserved because of his shyness and the teams he played for. left you in awe as much as players such as Wilkins, Jordan and Kemp. well spoken of and we'll spoken. one of many people's faves. Thank you for this post and Ty Clyde Drexler for your example of how to play the game and your greatness in various ways.
I know. Let's face though. Scottie and Mike were right in that Chuck didn't always keep himself in the best of shape. Not an issue with Clyde or Hakeem.
As a Lakers fan I enjoyed watching Clyde from 1988-1991. He was good! He could drive, shoot, dunk, and run the court. He gave Magic and Jordan a run for their money..
Jesse Varela I am the biggest Iverson fan but he was not as good as Drexler man. He belongs to another era. And yes, it's true that he was considered better than Kobe for many many years but people forgot it now because Kobe achieved more with his team and Iverson got older earlier. I say Iverson, best shooting guard of his era. I can agree with that. Also, he's probably the second biggest iconic figure in basketball history right after MJ. I think nobody influenced the way the game is played, the style etc more than Iverson besides MJ.
+Air Magic From the period of about '89 to '95, Clyde was 2nd best SG behind Jordan. He consistently put up high stats in steals, assists, rebounds, and points. I probably wouldn't rank him as the 2nd most skilled SG ever, but he would be easily be in my top 5.
G Ryen Good for you but I don't think you know Drexler that much (in 1995, Penny Hardaway was all NBA first team, just saying...). You just look at his numbers. And he still has better numbers in his prime overall (season, playoffs, finals) than any other player in his prime at his position, except Jordan. The best defensive team Kobe ever faced in the finals are the Pistons in 2004. Kobe averaged : 22,6/2,8/4,4/1,8/0,6, shooting 38,1%. The best defensive team Drexler ever faced in the Finals are also the Pistons in 1990. Drexler averaged : 26,4/7,8/6,2/1,8/0,2, shooting 54,3%. And the Bad boy Pistons were easily a better defensive team than the Pistons in 2004.
Clyde is still a top 5 all time sg in my opinion and is vastly underrated. he's one of the greatest all around perimeter players ever. my only issue with Clyde was his decision making & shot selection often time in close games was sometimes head scratching lol
Oohh. Kobe fans gonna cry. You're right, though. And for all those who cry about Dominique not being named top 50. Maybe he was. Not my point. Clyde was easily a far better all around player.
And he was a terrific passer. As much as I can't stand listening to him on Rockets broadcast these days, I still can't deny that he remains the greatest Blazer ever.
Depends on who you ask. Walton was the best player on our only championship team, so he's highly regarded, yes, but he only had a couple of big seasons in Portland because of all of his foot injuries. Drexler had a long AND highly decorated career, so personally I'd put him on top. Hopefully he's just keeping the spot warm for Damian, though. ;)
I am glad to hear from a Blazer supporter. I used to follow the NBA on those magic years spanning those years that included Drexler's years and all of those great players,( it's incredible how manny from that era one would have to mention). Just now I have started to follow the league again and search for the history of it before those years. I understand your point now. Thanks.
I remember best the 92 Finals. I was hoping Drexler would beat Jordan and finally get credit for being the show stopper he was. It was hard to be a team with just one star player to take on many two headed giants. The Blazers relied so heavily on Drexler to be all over the court. We had some good ones supporting mind you. It's when Drexler would be on the bench that you had to worry. Tracy Porter and Jerome "No Mercy" Kersey played huge roles. Same can be said for Pippen, Grant and Armstrong with the Bulls. It was the best series for me. The Glide will always be king of my childhood favorites. It was nice to see him get the ring with his old Phi Slamma teammate, The Dream.
***** I agree, except that Pippen was waaaay better than Kersey or anyone else the blazers had besides Clyde. Pippen was really the engine that made the Bulls go, with Jordan as the main scorer. The other players for the Bulls were role players that knew their jobs and didn't try to do too much, with Grant and Armstrong, and later Rodman, being All-Star caliber role players (Rodman never made the All-Star game as a Bull, but he did with the Pistons). That discipline made them extremely tough to beat, especially in a 7 game series. The Blazers had some great athletes who sometimes tried to do too much and ended up making critical mistakes when it mattered the most. The Glide was the only truly great player they had in that era. (BTW Ashley is my wife, I just use her profile! LOL)
+Jamie Warren I don't know if your memories are betraying you or if you are just lying but the Blazers had the most talented team of the entire league from 1990 to the 1992 nba finals. So Drexler had overall a better supporting cast than Jordan and he got dominated by Jordan during the finals. Scottie Pippen started to being a bonified all star only in 1992. In 1991 he wasn't even an all star.
+Ashley Lenox Drexler had the better team and Terry Porter was an all star. The blazers had the advantage inside at the center position and they also had better all aroud players. Pippen? Again, Pippen started to be considered great only in 1992. He wasn't an all star in 1991. The Blazers were considered the most talented team in the entire league at that time. Rodman? Role player with the bulls incapable of buying a basket in an empty gym and the unmanageable off the court. The reason why the Bulls got him was because no team wanted to have him in 1996. With the pistons, the were other players better than him at his position that didn't make the all star team but he was 2 time defensive player of the year and would average almost 20 rebounds a game while being only 6'7 in a league of dominant centers. He wasn't in his prime anymore when he joined the Bulls. With the pistons, he could score a little bit. The Bulls had overall average talents compared to all the great teams of the 90's (including the blazers in 1992 of course, which were again considered the most talented team of the league) when they won 6 titles. And that was a big part of their popularity and of Jordan's popularity. Scottie Pippen was a great player at his position but guys like Mullin, Bernard King, Dominique Wilkins, Larry Nance, James Worhty etc were better players than him at his own position and for a long time. Pippen is always either underrated or overrated. He was great but they were so many great players better than him at that time that he shouldn't be overrated because of his 6 rings.
+Air Magic I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. Better talent doesn't always make a better player/team. Yes, Portland was talented, but that didn't mean they were all great players. Being a great player takes much more than raw physical talent, it takes consistent fundamentals and proper focus when you need a play. No team was a better example of this during that era than the Chicago Bulls. How many times did Portland blow easy plays because guys were out of position trying to do too much? Pretty much every time at some point in the playoffs. Once Pippen hit his stride, the Bulls never did during that time. Pippen was not recognized as much as the other players you mentioned because of how much attention Jordan got from the media, but by his 3rd-4th year, Pippen was better than all those guys you mentioned, not as a consistent scorer, but in overall game. Until the Dream, Clyde never played with an all time great player, and they only won one championship because both guys were past their prime and injuries to them or other guys they acquired (like a well past his prime Barkley) limited their effectiveness and they were declining then. And the Bulls did have guys that could play at a high level when they needed to. Both Armstrong and Grant were All-Stars when Jordan "retired" for the 93-94 season, in which the Bulls would have made it to the Eastern Conference Finals were it not for some very poor officiating in game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. So even without Jordan, the Bulls were a legit playoff team, able to get out of the first round. Portland, without Drexler was not a legit contender, never making out of the first round during the time Drexler played for Houston. Even in how the teams matched up, all the Bulls had to do (they had three NBA All Defensive players Jordan, Pippen, and Grant would join that list the following year, but he was already playing at that level, just hadn't been recognized for it yet) was slow down Drexler, and most of the time they had Pippen guarding him, keeping Jordan fresher for the offense. Drexler, didn't have anyone else that good at defense except maybe Buck Williams, but he was past his prime, and the other guys could get some steals (like Porter) and a couple blocks here and there, but they were not as disciplined as the Bulls. They would go for fakes and get out of position, making them a primed victim for a disciplined Bulls team. Once they could get past Drexler, it was much easier for a fresher Jordan to rack up the points. With guys getting out of position and outplayed, Drexler had to try and do it all (which often leads to mistakes or play not as sharp as you'd like to see), and no player can do that for a whole series, few can even do it in a game. Was Jordan better than Drexler, yes, but that doesn't mean he still gets more credit than he should for the Bulls' success, and that Drexler gets more blame for Portland's failures than he should. People seem to think the Bulls were chumps without Jordan, when really the stats and records show that they were chumps without Pippen. They were better with Pippen and no Jordan than they were with Jordan and no Pippen. (And the Bulls without Jordan were better than the Blazers without Drexler.) That doesn't necessarily mean that Pippen is better than Jordan either. They played different positions and had different styles of play, but when it comes to team play and making a team win, Pippen's style was more suited to that. The combination of both players with a disciplined surrounding cast was unbeatable in a seven game series as they proved 6 times. Hence they really were the best team, they weren't just one great player, no champion in a team sport ever was...
Couple things beyond his obviously ELITE dunking ability--- 1. Clyde had impeccable wrist & finger control on the ball, allowing him to manipulate the trajectory and spin on the fly as good or better than anyone I've ever seen, but certainly up there with Jordan, Kobe, Tony Parker, etc. 2. His jump shot was a true jump shot. He got some legit lift on it, and it was absolutely gorgeous, at least in the selected clips for this montage.
Man those old school legends like him, Wilkins, Dr J., were freaking posterizing people left and right! They had a finesse to the poster jams, an art to it almost, which seems to have gotten lost along the way.. sadly.
The Glide didn't give a damn how tall you were, if you were standing in front of that rim when he decided to dunk then your ass was fixin to get posterized!
One of the best ever! Great mix. When he was determined to get to the hoop he was nearly impossible to stop. He was an outstanding passer as well. I do miss those good old days.
A lot of people will get mad at me for saying this, but Mr. Clyde Drexler was probably the best running shooting guard of all time even over michael. He was also great because he could score with or without the ball in his hands. He knew the fundamental cut into a two dribble move. Too many guards today dont even have that. And he was obv more than just a dunker like a person who never watched him might think. One of the most underrated shooting guards of all time.
Think a lot of people don't realize just how good of a passer Drexler was. He obviously could do a lot of things athletically, but his feel for the game was pretty damn impressive.

Drextler in the season he faced against Jordan in the 1991 finals he averaged 25.3ppg-7-7-2-1. He is criminally underrated I see him at 40-45 on some peoples list. Top 20 player
Clyde was incredible and if he played today, he would destroy the NBA. He had huge hands like MJ. I don't think people today understand how big a deal that is and how it helps dramatically in basketball. It gives you extensive moves at the basket and all over the court because you can grip the ball - this was the secret to MJ and it's what Phil Jackson cited as the main reason for MJ over Kobe. It also helped with passing. When one can grip the ball, the possibilities are endless - imagine what you could do in a pickup game if you were allowed to play with a volleyball - think of how you can grip it and how many different ways you could extend going to the basket or making one handed bullet passes. Clyde was big and strong as well as quick which made him a great offensive and defensive player. With his athleticism, he would be incredible in the run and gun style of NBA ball today which is how his Portland team played to some extent. Unfortunately for him, he played in a much more difficult era with tons of competition with other large players. His numbers do not fully represent his game by today's standards. This guy would beat D. Wade or Harden in their primes IMO. In his era, the handle of today wasn't allowed as carrying the ball was called and the physicality of defenders didn't make it feasible - but many youngsters think the handle is what makes a player and yet they don't understand the facts of why it wasn't used back then. He could do everything and more that guys like D. Wade and Harden did and he was a better defender than both of them.
The finger roll at 58 seconds is the best one ever and outside of George Gervin Clyde was the best at the finger roll. Dude could flat out play, just played in the era with MJ and didnt get the credit he deserved.
WRONG! No way He's better than I thought! I've ALWAYS known how great this guy was. I bet I've watched that last dunk , well over 1,000 times! It freaks me out how much mileage he covers in it. Seems like he jumping from 3-point range! That last dunk should be called the Energizer Bunny Dunk! ! He just keeps going & going & going... Amazing! I would rate that dunk as one of the top 10 dunks ALL-TIME! Thanks for the many memories Clyde!!

IMO the list of best SG's all-time goes: 1. Jordan 2. Bryant 3. Drexler And I dont think anyone else is close to those 3 with exceptions of Wade, West and Gervin.

I never saw him play since that was way before my time so I obviously have a different perspective but I’ve tried to do enough research to get an more accurate perspective on how good he was
***** First off you need to get your facts straight. Wade has a higher mid-range percentage for his career. Hell he even had a higher 3pt percentage for the first 11 years of their careers. Prime peak Wade Averaged 30.2 PPG 5 REB 7.5 AST 2.2 STL 1.3 BLK on 49% FGM 32% 3pt percentage. Drexler never once came close to those kind of numbers. Many officials, coaches and analysis say that Wade's prime was a top 5 talent to ever play in the NBA. You're obviously just biased for Drexler because that's really disrespectful to say. Not to mention you said he's "much better all-round" when Wade is ranked as one of the top 2 way players of all time. My advice to you is to do some research because 6/7 of the official known basketball sites have Wade ranked as the 3rd best SG ever. Even Allen Iverson and Jerry West are above Drexler. Good to see him take MJ more than a couple times there, and other amazing NBA greats but how about that high finger roll over defensive great David Robinson's finger tips!! Does it get any closer than that? Only the genius and talent of Clyde could orchestrate that kind of highlight. Anyone else and that's getting swatted .
No, but the point is he probably doesn't get the overall credit he deserves. Many see him as primarily an elite athlete and versatile scorer. When he was a really fine passer and rebounder as well. Not just a scorer, a la Wilkins, Aguirre, Chambers.
To me, he's one of the greatest 2 guards ever. He played in a much tougher NBA with much tougher rules - rules today cater to perimeter players and with Clyde's skills and physical gifts, he'd destroy the NBA today much like MJ would. People would rate D. Wade over Clyde today but in my mind, Clyde is simply better offensively than Wade.
