We take Oliver, our rescued Clydesdale horse, down to our homesteads river for the first swim of the year! (2024) We are excited to have him swimming once again! Swimming horses can really benefit them in so many ways! And with Oliver having EPM in the past we believe swimming is an excellent therapy for him. Swimming gives the horse a highly effective full body workout; improving general fitness, joint flexion and respiration. Depending on water level, the buoyancy of the water reduces concussion and impact on the lower limbs, and encourages an increased range of motion. The high resistance of the water leads to increased muscle activity, and the water pressure helps to reduce swelling, stimulate circulation of the lower limbs and the cold water helps to reduce any pain present. For Oliver, this is great! And SO beneficial. We also use swimming horses as a means of training. It is especially helpful in starting young horses. We will be doing a lot of Oliver's first training sessions here at the river. Swimming horses makes an easy and enjoyable learning experience for all. And a safer experience as well!
Oliver is a three year old Clydesdale stallion that we rescued March 2023 with the help of our viewers. He was very sick when we first got him and REALLY Underweight. He has come a long way and made a full recovery from EPM. He is now well and strong enough to start training to pull and eventually ride (Of course with the ok from our vet and chiropractor). Then you need to watch more horse rescue videos..."Colby's Crew" might be a good start. You will not see any riding crops being carried in these other videos, and you will see a lot more nose kissing just for starts.

Oliver loves the water and he loves his people. People think that dog, cats and horses are "dumb" animals, but they are wrong. They are intelligent creatures and able to discern their condition and treatment. Oliver remembers where he came from and how he was rescued from life threatening treatment and conditions.

Sometimes it seems like Oliver is a reincarnated dog. His behavior is dog like in his bond to JR, or so it seems to this non-equestrian. I love how he likes to rest his head on JR's shoulder and makes those groaning sounds. You are so blessed to have such a nice swimming "hole" on your property, especially as you live in the a more southern and hotter region. Have a wonderful holiday weekend! Horse and dogs are a lot alike, just most humans never spend as much time with their horses as they do their dogs now days (Horse can't really live in your home). Friend had colt who we were around for when born and every day we'd go out to visit, feed and take care of thier horses after school. He learned to play chase with us and absolutely loved it. He'd chase us around the field and gently poke us with his nose then turn to bolt off (he's slow down after a bit so we could catch up) and whoever got "tagged" would go after him or the other. People who saw it thought it was absolutely hilarious because we'd give his flanks a little swat and he'd give a little show as if he had been Oh so wounded with a bray and little jump or rear up giving us time to run off and we'd continue on till we were exhausted.

We had a river on our property. On our way across we would let the horses drink. One would stretch his neck out towards the water and when he had the reins loose he would swing his head up and race down the middle of the river, leaving us trying to gather ourselves and the reins! He loved that game!

Such a joy to see Oliver enjoying his swim. I remember when you first got him, the tension waiting to see if the meds would work on him, hiis poor pathetic sad eyes and demeanor. God bless you all for bringing Oliver to the healthy horse God meant him to be. So wonderful to sed what love and proper care does for animals. What are those noises he makes when he's "cuddling" in the water - is it pure unbounded happiness? It certainly appears to be. Edit: OOps, I just saw the comment in the video - he's DEFINITELY a happy horse.
