ISHPEMING, MICHIGAN - 03 March, 2018
In Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the Canadian National serves as the dominant railroad carrier, providing the area with service on a system of modest mainlines and numerous branches leftover from such pedigrees as the Soo Line, Chicago Northwestern, Wisconsin Central and the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic.
As has always been the case in the region, forestry and mining are the two core industries, and in this episode, we’ll see that the L540 is no exception. In this day-in-the-life documentary, we’ll follow an entire day’s work as it was in March of 2018, between Champion, Partridge, and all the sights in between.
Adding to the fun is the unique addition of the NS 1065 as foreign power, otherwise known as the NS Savannah and Atlanta Heritage Unit. Far removed from its namesake road, it joins a BNSF GE-Evolution Series unit trundling around the light branchline rails of Michigan’s Marquette Iron Range.

I grew up in Hancock MI, a mere 33 miles from L'Anse. Amazing to me, that 1065 was there, closer than it's ever been to my current home in San Diego!

Great stuff. I was actually out that way for the first time on tour with a band about two weeks after you shot this. We saw various railways but not much traffic so it's neat to find out about what moves here.

The traffic density is sparse, but regular. You can set your watch to them sometimes. Know the patterns and grab a scanner, and you can find plenty of action to follow.

@@ThornappleRiverRailSeries I doubt I'll be back that way anytime soon but next time I'll bring a scanner for sure. That said, the tight schedules around touring mean you rarely have time to stop along the way between venues :(

I miss living in Michigan. For some reason CN is always leasing locomotives in that certain area.
@GEES44DC
@GEES44DC 5 лет назад
I don't think it's leasing. It's likely where they hold power for horsepower repayment.

It's short term borrowing, as opposed to leasing which is (normally) long term. Energy credits (a.k.a. horsepower-hour credits) eliminate the need to swap out power in the middle of the run, reducing the amount of time and effort wasted. This is the same system that explains why Union Pacific double stack trains can be seen in the Detroit area (for example) as well as BNSF coal trains delivering coal to hundreds of power plants not only in Michigan, but also much of the midwest and even the east coast.

What type of placards are on the cars from the mine?
@fxdb2011
@fxdb2011 5 лет назад
The white covered gondola cars are from Humboldt crushing facility of the Eagle Mine which mines Copper and Nickle ore in sulfide body. Placard is UN3077 Copper Sulfide, a environmental hazard, hope this helps! Oh the crushed ore is heading to Canada for processing.
