Male torso CNC-carved out of plywood.
By Dennis Van Hoof, from Top o' Arts (topoarts.com).
3D model generated from a series of 50 photos for photogrammetry with Zephyr software. Manual clean-up and slicing of the 3D model with Meshmixer software. Router tool paths created with VCarve software.
Carving done with the Shapeoko XXL, using WhiteSide router bits. Approximately 7 hours of carving per plywood board (10 boards in total). Gluing of 18 pieces with regular wood glue.
Sanding with Dremel drums and flap wheels, and polishing finish by hand. Stained with Danish natural oil and varnished with semi-gloss. Statue was mounted onto a marble slab with Fuze-it LN2000.

Thank you Jeff. I believe you're right that most people who watch RU-vid videos don't really realize the time and effort it takes to create something like this. But I know there are some out there (like yourself), who can truly appreciate not only the technical and practical woodworking content, but the entire process of turning a creative idea all the way from design to reality, and compiling it into a comprehensive story that is interesting to watch. As long as I keep getting (some) positive feedback, it is worth it; and I'm happy to share my woodworking passion in the hope to inspire! :)

Great work. The addition of some alignment holes in the cutout parts would make aligning the final parts a cinch.

Good thinking! I considered that, but my experience with the female torso was that it's not really necessary, as the shapes are kind of self-aligning de to their uniqueness.

That was amazing ! do you have a video where you show the process from zephyr to real thing? what I mean is the software side of these. I will love to see how you use meshmixer and vcarve or even carbide create in more detail, they seem to be such a basics software but what you achieved is incredible.
@dennisvanhoof9958
@dennisvanhoof9958 3 года назад
Thanks, Matias! I learned everything I know on how to use Zephyr, Meshmixer, and VCarve (I don't use Carbide Create) from watching RU-vid videos. There are many out there that explain the process much better than I could. The Zephyr program includes a wizard that walks you through the steps from photo inclusion to 3D file creation; there are plenty of excellent Meshmixer tutorial videos on RU-vid, and the program is very easy to learn (very intuitive); Vectric has a complete series of step-by-step training videos for all their software packages on their website, with examples that gradually build up in complexity.

Awesome videos Dennis! I would have posed for you... but not sure it would have looked that good! Where are you located btw? And what advice would you give someone who is debating between a Bob's E4 and Shapeoko XXL? Thanks!
@dennisvanhoof9958
@dennisvanhoof9958 3 года назад
Thanks for the kind words, Will! I live in California. If you have the budget, I strongly recommend the Shapeoko XXL. BobsCNC is nice for beginners; but soon, you'll find that the considerable flex of the wooden frame and the very slow feed rates it allows are frustrating limitations, that won't allow you to do accurate 3D carving. If you plan to do more than sign making, you are better off with the Shapeoko. I own a BobsCNC E3, and have converted it permanently to a LASER cutter/engraver only.

Thank you! I'm not really good with Meshmixer. I only know the very basics, which I learned from watching RU-vid videos. There are many out there that explain these basics much better than I ever could (I started with this series: ru-vid.com/group/PLu8TYSQ5jCFjdQBHsLoybhdKXOTmpTRlb). Also, video editing is very time consuming and labor intensive. I prefer to spend that time working with wood. :)

I was using a feed rate of 300 and a plunge rate of 1/2 that - 150. The bit ended up breaking. What do you use for a feed rate? My y axis won't go further back now than the middle of the table where I had set the zero too. How do I fix that?
@inhibited44
@inhibited44 Год назад
You carved that double sided. Do the bits tend to break if you carve it one sided?
@dennisvanhoof9958
@dennisvanhoof9958 Год назад
No, the bits don't break if you set the pass depth right. I had to carve double-sided, as the 3D slices had overhanging parts on both sides.

any chance you know the settings you'd use for the depth of cut and feed rate cutting that plywood. The equipment I use is in a shop elsewhere and I burned the wood at the end and screwed up bearings on a router. .125 depth, 300 feed rate and 150 plunge for a 1/4 in straight bit.
@dennisvanhoof9958
@dennisvanhoof9958 Год назад
I believe I used the following settings wit my Shapeoko XXL to carve plywood with an 1/4 upcut bit: Pass depth = 0.15 inch Feed rate = 32 inch/min Plunge = 25 inch/min
@inhibited44
@inhibited44 Год назад
@@dennisvanhoof9958 That makes sense. When I used Aspire to set up the project, it generated similar readings before I was advised Freud bits go faster. That's slow, but at least I won't mess up the router. I was using a router bit too. No wonder it takes so long to cut.

@@kingdarkem With such long and complicated carves, the bits usually last only a single project. After days of endless routing, they are dull and need to be replaced.
