If you have ever wanted a CNC machine but thought it was all too hard then join with me as I go through the first stage of owning a CNC... and that is building it.
This is the best way to get to know how a cnc works and gives you confidence to start using the software to transform your projects from ideas, to a drawing, to the cnc actually cutting the job out for you.

Could you move the connection point for your cable track closer to the front off the tray? This would it so the back wall doesn't interfere with your track.

Hey Dave, I know this is a few years ago now but I only just watched it. Saw the comments you’d written in about being in a metric country re the positioning of the ‘joists’ on the frame. Made me chuckle as here in the UK we’re supposed to be metric too, yet a “full size” sheet of MDF or plywood etc are all 2,440mm x 1,220mm - so we may be ‘metric’ but all the bloody sizes are almost always exact conversions of the old imperial sizes! Anyway, at least a spoil board from the UK would fit without modification 😉 [Edit: Dave, it was worth watching the whole video just to see the sheer joy on your face at the end when you got the machine to jog up and down for the first time! “I love it, I love it!” - Me too! Hilarious and very entertaining, thank you 👍. Also, has the design of the machine’s proximity sensors and their location changed since you built yours, or did you put the long, sticking out sensor (at the end of the Y axis where it was in the way) where the Proximity Sensor Flag should be instead? Unless they changed them because of problems like you identified there? On the current design the cylindrical proximity sensors go on the X and Z axis, and the other type fix on the gantry mounting plate - and those reference the proximity flags on the Y axis end stops (like where you put the cylindrical sensor]

That is an impressive machine. I assembled a large CNC machine from a different company. Actually we did it twice because we relocated it. It brings a new awareness of the difference between straight, flat, and level. On our machine, the X axis was along the length of the table, the Y axis was across the width of the table, and the Z axis was vertical. It still followed the right-hand rule for the axes.

This from their international shipping page. "If you have a larger order or machine kit in your cart, these sometimes cannot be economically shipped via standard courier service, so the price you see may be extremely high. Please contact us if this is the case -- we can typically ship these larger and heavier items via air freight to your nearest major airport. Just let us know which airport is closest to you, and we can usually get a reliable quote within a day or two."

I built a CNC machine on a shoestring budget. It isn't as big or good looking as this one here is. But it works. I was also surprised to learn just how into small projects I really am. So a small work area isn't the limiting factor I initially thought it'd be. I don't have a stack of sheet goods hanging around my shop to cut up or the inclination to go out and pick that sort of thing up either. I do have a lot of small stock to work on though. Life is a journey of surprising discoveries.

Well the machine price was $US13K and the freight $US6K. With GST, customs entry, and local freight that added up to over $US21K which is approx $AUD30K. It's the freight that kills.

Hmm I got charged $1,300 door to door by sea freight.. Lucky to get it in October at this rate. I got quoted about $1,000 door to door ocean freight for the 4896. Then I upgraded to 60120 and the shipping got really expensive $1,333 This was without the extra electronics and motor kits you had. The customer support better be first rate.. because the shipping might have been :)

Dave. I just received a quote from CNC Routerparts for the 4' x 8' machine including the bells and whistles and cutters etc. You are right the freight is much cheaper by sea. All up with 5% customs duty, freight and GST etc it is a shade over $AUD20K. I did not include Mach 3 or Vcarve CAM as it is cheaper to buy on-line. I'll be using Fusion 360. Only reservation is service if I have a warranty claim as returning a part to the USA is not something I want to get involved in. I have asked them the question so we'll see I guess.
@DavidStanton

Great to hear Stephen. I believe shipping to Australia costs a lot less when you ask for a quote from CNC router parts rather than go through their domestic US couriers in their checkout.

Yep about that. They pay return freight both ways for any faulty components in warranty period. They also recommend VCarve or Aspire in preference to Fusion 360 and after checking the Vectric website I can see why. Have you picked out what software you intend to use? As a CNC user and woodworker myself, might I suggest Autodesk's Fusion 360. It's a really nice program that has both cad and cam features so you draw, assemble and generate your gcode all from the same program. And for most home users it's free. One last note on an otherwise fine video, it's linear not lineal. ;)
@DavidStanton
@DavidStanton 6 лет назад
Hi Brian, thanks for the clarification on linear v lineal although I am a little confused as online dictionaries say either is fine. Maybe they were written by people like me? lol. The software I am using is Aspire and I find it very easy to learn and put into use. I have created a few 2 D jobs that I will share with people as I get some time to create those videos. Aspire creates CAD and CAM and switches between them effortlessly. Saves as jpg's at any stage and also the code for the CNC to run from all to easily.
@BrianLeeWho
@BrianLeeWho 6 лет назад
Hi David, yes, I am very familiar with Aspire and the rest of Vectric's lineup of software. It's a great program although a bit expensive. I only mention Fusion 360 because at some point you might think about making furniture with your CNC and Fusion 360 is great for this task. It allows you to design each part separately and then assembly them into the finished piece which you can then examine to see if you made any mistakes on a measurement or fit. It's a great time saver. (I know that SketchUp allows you to do something similar, but I don't use SketchUp because it doesn't generate true curves.) You can also generate blueprints, which are handy when you are out in the shop and don't have ready access to your computer--or simply want the blueprint in front of you as you check the measurements on the piece that just came out of the CNC router. I own a very old copy of Aspire. I still use it for text engraving and inlay work--two areas that Fusion is not very good at. Fusion 360 has a steeper learning curve than Aspire but I think it's interface is one of the easiest to learn amongst most CAD software programs. Give it a try.

Thanks for the inside info on Fusion 360. First time I had heard of the extra detail it offers. I will get started with Aspire and see if I need to branch out later.

Yes, absolutely! If you watch my interview with Avid you might pick up some info from the questions I asked them.

@@DavidStanton Hi David. I just finished setting up my Avid CNC. I had a question for you regarding the dust collection and grounding. Did you ground your flexible hose that's connected to your dust shoe? If so, how did you go about it? did you expose the wire in the hose on the two ends?

Hi Dave, I'm interested in building the machine you have but I couldn't tell what all is required to get to the same setup. Can you help such as the price range for everything minus the software and what are the two side boxes along the right side of your cnc setup. Is one the controller for the motors and is the other for VFD? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just subscribed and look forward to more of your videos. Thanks!!
@DavidStanton
@DavidStanton 4 года назад
Hi Tony Greer. The boxes are the controller and VFD. Go to CNC Router parts web site and have a look at the pro 4896 kit. Mine also has the 34 nema motors and 3 kilowatt spindle plus the full leg platform. Pricing is on their web site.

Hi Dave I just rang cnc router parts as I want to get one do myself. They told me to ask you about how much the total cost was for you including import tax ect I’m looking at the same set up as you so if possible could you please give me an idea of the extra costs you had to pay or what the total was for you as I’m trying to work out total cost. I really appreciate it. Also are you happy with your purchase. Thank you Clint Denholm

Dave. Was it tiresome getting the delivery through Australian customs or did the freight company sort it out for you?
@DavidStanton
@DavidStanton 6 лет назад
The freight company looked after everything although they could be better organised.

I love the epoxy floor Brett, I had my doubts and it scratches easily but after a couple of days I don't see them....weird...

Epoxy duh. Ha ha. You ever breathe in the fumes from an epoxy job? If you have you'd get the joke. I met a guy once that did all the epoxy jobs for the whole New York metro area once. Of all the things he's lost he misses his mind the most. It was very sad.
