"Chris Cuomo thinks the “angry” tone Professor Reza Aslan took this week with CNN hosts Don Lemon and Alisyn Camerota unwittingly demonstrated the exact hostility some people fear of the Islamic faith.
On Sept. 29, Aslan appeared on CNN Tonight and slammed Bill Maher for his comments on the Islamic faith, while also scolding Lemon and Camerota for what he felt was an “over-generalization” of 1.5 billion Muslim people as promoting violence.
“This is the problem,” he said Monday night. “These conversations that we’re having aren’t really being had in any kind of legitimate way. We’re not talking about women in the Muslim world, we’re using two or three examples to justify a generalization. +Kshitij Tiwari If you want to have a honest conversation you need to do better research. First off I agree not all Muslims and not even the majority of Muslims are assholes but Reza is a asshole. Where to begin? There are no stats available on what most Muslim countries are doing to females when it comes to their genitals so Reza made a statement he had no evidence to back up. Next when Reza talks about 7 women were elected as leaders he fails to note that those women come from the most powerful families in the country. They were not in power because they were women who could make a difference but because of who their dad was. Reza distorts facts and tells lie to make a his point. Reza did not bring facts to the table. Just half truths and yes when you start calling people names you have basically admitted defeat.

+Henry Jeter interesting. although regardless of whether these women were from wealthy families as you say, wouldn't it still be evident that demeaning women would be more cultural than religious. its often rare that somebody elected into power will have a major effect on society no matter where theyre from. besides America but only because as far as countries go you guys are still pretty new if you know what I mean. for example. im from the uk, there aren't many priministers weve had in the last 20 years that have significantly affected our nation that I can think of besides Blair (for bad reasons) but theyre still elected. doesn't this mean that the comment about being from wealthy families is void. theyre women, that's the main point of the argument. I agree with TYT on 90% of things, but it's so disappointing to hear them defending Reza Aslan in basically saying that there are no problems related to Islam in countries such as Indonesia, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Tell that to women who have been murdered by their families in honour killings or raped because they did not adhere to their families' or communities' Islamic beliefs about how to (not) interact with men.

firdaus muttalib No, not yet but I do hope to visit Indonesia someday, it is beautiful and has some great people (including Muslims =))! I do understand that not everyone is like that. But those who are not, in my opinion, are like that more in spite of their religion and what their holy book says. I feel like there is a problem (and I often feel this way about Christianity too) when the ones who really follow the religion do such awful things.

Even if there are islamic countries with relatively more rights than other islamic countries, does that mean they lack any extremist incidents like the ones you described? of course not. However that does not mean to generalise it over to the whole damn country or the whole damn muslim population. If you insist on doing that, please do the same with the christian nut cases that exist even within the US and still has shame and disowning policies or even death threats when it comes to homosexuality or deviation from family rules or the Orthodox jews not mixing with women. CNN's response offends me in so many ways I want to talk to you about all of them. 1) First, considering the answers they expected from Aslan, they went for the famous fox model of bringing up a muslim to shit on all muslims. That is solid. 2) They're pretending like there was some sort of debate when Aslan actually wiped the floor with them. 3) He did NOT fucking say that she was stupid. He said her argument was stupid. Which stands uncontested, btw, I haven't seen anyone come and argue the intelligence of what she said. 4) The effort that they put in not understanding Aslan's point at all was astounding. The example that they brought up doesn't contradict his point at all. "AFTER A WEEK I CAME UP WITH THIS GREAT EXAMPLE THAT DOESN'T CHANGE ANYTHING AT ALL." 5) Their response is an ad hominem, in which they blame Aslan for using ad hominem.This has to be dishonest, you can't tell me that they're dumb enough to not see the contradiction. 6) Do they really think people are dumb enough to change their mind on the Aslan segment based on this segment? I'm not even American and I still feel insulted that they think they can do this to you.

you ticked off every reason I was saddened by CNN's response. so thanks for the summery... The sad thing is that there is a lot to be talked about concerning Muslims or Islam and women, They could have had that conversation and done us a service. And I guess I didn't mind the first interview with Reza, they asked the stupid questions and Reza gave great answers, a lot of people unfortunately probably also ask those same stupid questions. But this post interview show was just bad sportsmanship

In Somalia we call FGM a tradition from the Pharaoh era. It came in Somalia many years before Islam. It is deceitful and anti Islamic to use our pre-Islamic bad traditions against Islam. FGM is not an Islamic thing and it doesn't exist in Muslim countries which do not have any geographical connections with Nile River.

Semi-true. FGM is certainly not prescribed by Islam, but it does exist in some Muslim-majority countries. It also exists in some non-Muslim countries. Religion (Islam or Christianity) has nothing to do with it. As a cultural practice, it antedated the arrival in Africa of both.

***** am wearing Hijab for Modesty. When dressed in a covering way, I am not showing my physical attributes (or perhaps lack of) to anyone. People are forced to judge me by my actions and speech, by how well I do my job or how I interact with others, rather than by whether or not I am “good looking” and interest them. To that same end, my beauty is then saved for my husband’s full enjoyment and he knows he does not share me with anyone. I am not out getting a lot of attention from others that may make him feel insecure or that is disrespectful to me. I am noticeably different, a Muslim. Most people respect that. They can clearly see that I am not the kind of woman that you whistle or cat-call at, nor am I going to agree to meet you in a bar or club, nor can you proposition me on the street or in the office. There is a level of respect that men give me whereby they do not treat me in the same way they might treat other women they meet and believe they can “get with”. In fact, in my case, I find that many men (yes, non-Muslims) are more gentlemanly with me in general. I have more doors held open for me, paths cleared for me, more assistance when needed, and an overall respect given to me. Wearing the head covering works to remind me of my duties. I am more likely to be a better person when I am covered because the headscarf is a potent reminder to me of what type of behavior and attitude is expected of me. I am less likely to lose my temper, more likely to be kind and forgiving, in difficult situations.

That's not a fair analogy at all - I never said all Muslims are terrorists because some are Jihadis. I stated that I think it is reasonable to assume that their behavior is strongly influenced by their religion. The names of these groups are religious (like ISIS), they release material announcing their religious beliefs and how they justify their actions, etc. That is exactly the same I agree with most of what you say, but I don't think they effect my argument at all. Bringing up that the Nazis were Christian just means that they are just as motivated by antisemitism from the Bible as the terrorists.

tbh I think CNN and Reza both had some valid points. CNN did say some comments that were generalizing Muslims too much but Reza's belief that some Muslim countries have laws that make men and women equal is inaccurate. There's no country on earth where men and women are equal. Reza making some of these countries seem like "safe havens" for women by bringing up some heads-of-state that are women erases and ignores the injustices that women do face in that country. He needs to acknowledge those negative aspects as well.

Besides, stating having a woman a head of state is simply to clarify this huge misconception that is being spread like poison that every muslim woman is treated worse than stray dogs !!! Does this mean there are no problems in these countries for women? absolutely not, but a rational and factual assessment is hugely lacking when speaking about these places.

I've lost respect for CNN. I'm indonesian. In Aceh the province she mentioned, put it this way, that province is like the backwoods banjo playing hickville of our country. I stated that Reza said that the Quran forbids slavery (which is untrue). That is a fact. There's also a famous video in which he states that women are equal to men in Indonesia. You seem know a bit about Islam so you probably know that Reza's statement on that is also untrue. I never put down Islam in any way. I just gave examples of Reza's lies (which you asked for)

Eddie R First of all, i live in Europe. One of the most sought terrorist might be in my country ( Netherlands) now. Can't verify at this moment if that is the case. However, their Network (ISIS) doesn't stop in Belgium. Secondly, our 2nd and 3rd generation African and Middle-east migrants sympathise with ISIS. Thirdly, the Dutch have shown for decades tolerance towards these migrants. But as you can imagine that solidarity is not without limits whereby more tension is felt between groups. When Geert Wilders ranted about less Moroccans, the majority of the Dutch protested against his statement. So yes we collectively condemn him. If this is not met in response to Paris by the Muslim community then the polarisation will increase. The muslim community have to start voicing their disgrace otherwise the Global Jihadi Insurgency will increase and threaten our freedom and safety. Your comparison of Christian to Radical Sunni Islam is like comparing apple to oranges. These insurgence are not lone wolves. They adhere to a version of islam known as radical sunni islam. If regressinve left stop making excuses instead of recognising the danger of political islam then do to your passive attitude you are importing a greater problem.

Jesus might not have people beheaded but then again Jesus never took over the government, Moses, Joshua, some Popes, Martin Luther and many religious leaders, reigns of Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary, Salem Witch trials, etc. had many people killed some were beheaded and others hung and some burned at the stake. They still have divisions in Ireland over Protestants and Catholics and not that long ago they were at war with each other with bombings.

So, too, Muhammed is in Islam. Look at the examples of those two men and tell me which religion is more likely to generate violent followers.

Syed Tilal the history of Muhammed is vague, to day the least. But there is enough corroborating oral history to believe that he beheaded, at the very least, several hundred jewish victims. The USA did not, by definition, strictly adhere to the idea of Imperialism. That is, we do not have a monarchy and we do not have an 'empire'. We did it by proxy, or puppet governments propped up and put into power with US funds and military support.Admittedly, many of these relationships started with conflicts or 'revolutions', The formation of the country of Panama is a good example. By the way, most countries that we had/have influence in have greatly benefited from the relationship, e.g. the Philippines, Mexico, et.al. The treatment of native americans and the establishment of slavery in the south are both despicable and dark chapters in the formation of our republic. The difference is that these acts took place over 150 years ago. Muslim extremism and terrorism is at the forefront of the disruption of world order NOW, and most islamic states have not said or done anything about it. Until now with the barbarism of ISIS, Thankfully, we have active participation and outcry form Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Iran, and others.

hmm, going to have to strongly diagree here, there is a difference between collateral damage through bombing and strikes, and the beheading of civilians or crashing planes into a civilian building. The difference here is intent. If an attack is aimed at destroying a military presence or a threat within a war, then that is not an act of terrorism even if civilians are caught in the crossfire (as long as strong attempts were made to minimize this collateral damage.) An attack on a civilian location or on a captured civilian journalist, with the aim not to harm or destroy a threat or an opposing military but specifically to "terrorize" a civilian population is an act of terrorism... hence the name.

The US has a half-Black President, but things have actually gotten worse for Blacks in general, so having female leaders in Muslim countries does not necessary bode well for women generally in those countries.

Ok. I was born Muslim. Born in the United States, hold dual citizenship (USA, Jordan), moved to Jordan at a mere age 3. Lived there till I went to university. Currently 24 years old living in Dubai. I have a serious Christian girlfriend and mother. Moreover, I have a younger sister who has a Jewish Turkish boyfriend. Clearly, I was raised to be accepting of other faiths, beliefs and nationalities. I was raised in a society and mentality where women are 100% equal. Many other muslims - if not the majority - were raised like I was. To say all muslims are violent, racist bigots who demean women and want everyone from any other faith to die is utterly factually incorrect. It is also very insulting, to say the least. I am proof.

6:00 The problem with comparing Christianity to Islam is that a lot of people,and I mean most people, have bought into the premise that Christianity is an entirely different thing to Islam and to the point where Islam doesn't fall under the 'religion' folder anymore due to it being so different in their heads.
