Right now I am like "What did we expect Anita to do. Aren't there several videos of her flipping out on camera when ever someone questions her believes." Personally, I am pissed about the way Vidcon issued a statement that not only apologizing to Anita but accused some of Sargon's group of getting in illegally. I have yet to hear a story about anyone from that group being kicked out for being there illegally, so how can the make such a claim? Then Anita was still allowed to participate in a harassment panel and afterwards attacked Boogie for basically saying that we need to bond together to stop online harassment.

Jirekianu I was watching a video by one of the "harassers" and apparently the reason why they were at their panel is because they wanted to have a conversation with all the feminists and pretty much listen to what they have to say whether they agree or disagree. They weren't at just Anita's panel but a majority of panels that had people like her. For the most part, they did have civil conversations with these people but in Anita's case, she just shuts them down assuming they're out there to harm because they are "garbage human beings". It sounds to me like they played the situation in a very slimy political way, choosing not to do much of anything and instead make ambiguous statements, so that they wouldn't get the ire of any one particular group turned on them. I agree on the sentiment but disagree that they made "ambiguous statements." Hell, if we push that logic to its full conclusion, are we saying people who disagree with us aren't allowed to view our speeches? The core to any logical discussion and philosophical debate is in finding conflicting ideas and understanding them, not in removing everyone who disagrees. Because with the logic Vidcon puts in practice here, it's somehow the audience's fault for disagreeing with the speaker, and not the speaker's fault for behaving in a manner befitting someone given that platform with which to speak. Simply put, if you can't speak in public where many people may or may not agree with you, which given the exceptional level of ethical problems both in Anita's information gathering, logical conclusions, and use of artwork/footage; then you have no right to use that platform to begin with. A philosopher who can't effectively defend their positions without resorting to personal attacks on the audience, both those asking questions and those merely observing, obviously has no intention of actually having a discussion, but purely evangelizing.

From everything I've seen, and the footage shown, Sargon nor anyone near him were directly involved in any attempt to provoke her. Many people were equally recording the panel, and they all were in their right to do so. It's a public panel, and there were no bans on recording. Ya' can't just say "no, you specifically can't record because I don't like you" now. At any rate as far as the footage shows, Anita struck at him, without any direct provocation on his part. Beyond any of that, as a debater, you really don't have the right to choose who hears your statements when you're given a platform to speak. If people who disagree with you arrive, it's your job to convince them of the merits to your argument. If you can't do that, I'd argue the problem isn't your audience, but your argument. Which, being entirely fair, after this long from her and the consistent way she treats people who are critical to her, I'd further argue the problem isn't the argument or the audience, but the person themselves. To put it bluntly, when everyone around her seems to act like they're walking on eggshells to avoid setting her off, I tend to think that there is some merit to the argument that she's aiming to stir controversy, not to have an actual discussion in good faith. Y'know, ironically the very thing she's accusing everyone who showed up but didn't agree with her of doing.

Fucking this! I've been saying this for a while now. If you affiliate with just one party entirely you are blinding yourself with their ideologies, and to me, that is the most foolish thing a person can do. Be open-minded, I'd advise against taking big media companies articles or news word for word if anything avoid them or at least take it with a grain of salt. It's better to find people on both sides who have their own take, avoid the extremists, and listen to what they have to say. Then decide for yourself on issues. Thats why i'm registared Independent for a reason.
Full disclosure: I like Sargon of Akkad and his content and I'm not a big fan of Anita. As far as Anita's response to Sargon, I can understand where it came from, however when mommy and daddy fight you don't do it in front of the kids. Her response was unprofessional at the least and harassment at its worst. I understand that Sargon's fan base can be confrontational, harassing, etc. but two wrongs STILL don't make a right. However, Anita's treatment of Boogie makes my blood boil! Boogie, a long time RU-vidr, all around stand up human being, and someone who has spoken out against harassment and bullying on this platform for years. He knew ahead of time that he and Anita would be on the same panel and with that knowledge tailored his points of discussion so they would not be seen as confrontational towards anyone. He gave Anita the respect she thought she deserved as a person yet she refused to give that respect in return. When the panel was over and everyone was leaving the stage Anita, who's job is to be professionally offended, confronted Boogie in a hyper aggressive manner because of his closing statements. Typing anymore is just going to make me mad, just wanted to get some of it out. TL;DR Anita is a despicable human being who doesn't care about anyone's opinion but her own. Boogie is one of the nicest people I have ever seen, and attacking him of all people, when he actually took the time to tip toe around her hypersensitive victim complex crazy ass, has actually made me hate her more than I thought possible. As a feminist, I think that Anita was definitely let off the hook. No matter what he has said about her online, she chose to harass him, seemingly without immediate reason. I think it's ridiculous that she completely disregarded vidcon rules and ended up receiving an apology.

I absolutely believe that the lack of objective conversation from Fox News and CNN is part of a larger problem. What scares me most about this issue is that it damages the possibility for real conversation. I believe this issue comes directly from any situation where the viewers have a large influence on the content that they view, monetarily or otherwise. Consider Facebook, whether I know it or not by adding or deleting friends and interacting with post through likes and comments I am influencing what Facebook's algorithm chooses to put in my news feed. Over time my news feed becomes an echo chamber of only views and opinions I agree with and that's dangerous. The same thing happens to CNN and Fox because if I agree with the content I will watch it and that influences their ratings, further influencing their content. It's like Facebook on a grander scale. I for one am tired of hearing political commentary in the news, it doesn't belong there. The news should be about what happened, not about what should happen.
Maybe a slightly narrow minded point: Why does Vidcon have to have so many panels on controversial and provoking topics? Why can it not be a more light hearted event, one where fans can meet creators and creators can partake in fun and entertaining activities. That's how I feel about the whole thing. I'm a fan of hers in the same way I'm a fan of Tom Cruise, I liked most of Tropes Vs. She claims "harassment" and "stalking" because the skeptic community has consistently critiqued her claims, not because people are bullying or harassing her as a person and there is a very big difference between a critique and blatant and consistent trash talk. Her and people like her have essentially shifted the overton window to include what she calls "the daily grind" of questions and critiques into her own definition of harassment which does nothing but shut down and stifle conversation. I strongly disagree with much of what Anita Sarkeesian says. I think that her version of feminism seems be more about replacing male privilege with female, than equality for all. That being said, I do see why she found Sargon's presence threatening. Had he come alone, that would have been one thing. But he didn't. First of all at that point in said person's career she was a musician playing in a not very secured venue. Sadly it could have been prevented if there had been better security. If she agreed to be in a panel where conversation was encouraged then she should have braced for both sides of the topic that would inevitably have been brought up.

Context is one thing, but it shouldn't excuse breaking the rules. It can explain why she broke the rules, but it doesn't excuse them. From the stories I've read/seen of Anita, she seems to be always pushing specific narratives and hounding those that oppose that narrative. "Narratives" make me feel uneasy, because they never show the whole truth. Anyone intentionally pushing a narrative is worthy of general distrust in my eyes.

He falsely claimed Sarkeesian pocketed the donations from Kickstarter (she didn't, you can go look at her tax returns). He perpetuated the "ethics in game journalism" narrative, despite screenshots and other evidence saying otherwise from the movement's ringleaders. Sargon will strawman and take Sarkeesian out of context so he can use it to drum up those subscriptions and followers. It's amazing Sarkeesian didn't jump off the stage and stab him after the things Sargon and his cronies have done.
Personally I constantly worry about whether or not the news I receive is biased. Regardless of whether or not a news organization IS appealing to ratings, the POSSIBILITY that they might be heavily diminishes their credibility on any topic. A modernized version of the Fairness Doctrine, if executed independently of any administration, would certainly increase my faith in the news I find.
I believe that is a weak move by the management team of Vidcon. They didn't bring justice to the rules that were broken when it occurred now so, therefore, there will always be this "You will ban me but not Anita?" argument. They should've at least done something to handle this situation and give her some sort of consequence so that it can be a precedent. If they had there would probably be fewer outbursts in the future, but now there is no telling to where it will go in the coming years.

Snarbalax If you listened to Sargon look retrospectively at times where he has been wrong, or give detailed reasoning for him disagreeing with someone's point and giving links to facts and sources he has quoted you would be able to see that the majority of his points have at least some basis in reason. He may not be your cup of tea but don't be daft, where critical thinking is concerned he leaves Anita in the dust.
Phil It's more about that by thinking it's harrassment (that the front 3 rows had people in there that criticized any of them on the panel in the past) that Anita showed she had prejudice on them (because they didn't give her a reason for thinking what she was thinking) based on their past (which makes her discriminatory to critics). Hey Phil! I've been viewing for about a year and wanted to say thanks so much for the reporting. Even when you talk about your opinion, I feel that you do a good job of representing the other side and it makes me feel like the reporting is really balanced. So thanks for that! That being said, I do feel that I have a different opinion from a lot of people on here on the Anita situation. Before I go any further into my thoughts, I do want to say that I don't agree with everything Anita has to say especially when it comes to video games (as that is how I'm most familiar with her). However, I will say that as a woman in the games industry gamergate really effected me. The gaming community suddenly didn't feel as supportive as it once did and still to this day in my everyday life I'm a little frightened to go around wearing dev team shirts from work or post my job on my LinkedIn while I'm working there. (In all likelihood, nothing would happen but it is scary and it is kind of bummer to feel like I can't talk to people about the awesome things I've worked on.) This is also just my opinion without even having experienced the threats personally, so I can only imagine what it would be like in Anita's situation where she actually received threats. When I put things in that context, along with the fact that this guy has seemingly encouraged (intentionally or unintentionally) threats against her before (if I misinterpreted that part please let me know), was sitting in the front with a camera, and filled the front few rows with his friends, I could see that action feeling threatening. I don't by any means agree with or think that it is ok that Anita called this guy a "garbage person", but I guess that when I think about everything in this context I can understand why it happened and I personally feel that this context does matter to an extent? Not that it excuses it, but I feel that it's important to understanding it. That's just my thoughts though. :)

They had a vested interest in attending that open panel because the issues that were going to be discussed are issues they tackle on their channels. This years VidCon was the first time that group had ever had the chance to come together - all good friends with similar interests. I'm a big fan of the vlog brothers and the idea of Vidcon but their response seemed hastily researched and very bias. I'm not a Sargon fan by far, I'm not subscribed to him and I disagree with him I'm pretty much everything but I know what he does and doesn't do, his video archive is still online to back this up and it was poorly represented by vidcon along with poorly representing the rest of the skeptic community that peacefully visited the panel with him. They seemingly took Anita at her word and didn't even try to contact the other side. Anita incited two different confrontations at Vidcon, and yet _she_ is the victim? You *cannot* be the inciter and also be the victim. Logically that doesn't make sense regardless of how you spin it. There's a strong social bias at play from Hank Green. I've been talking to my female artist friends about this (many who have suffered abuse online due to their work) and they were equally disappointed with the vidcon debriefing with one saying "it sets a horrible example going forward". It's bias and special treatment purely based on the absolutes and generalisations rather then on the actual contexts of what happened.

Sapher I initially had more lines in my comment going into more details over my experiences with his content but I removed them when reading it back as it wasn't really relevant to my overall point as my general reason for mentioning his content and my experiences with it was more so because it's easy to assume people defending him are fans of his work and people defending Anita are fans of her work whilst in my case and the case of people who I've discussed this with (including feminists) it's lesser about having a horse in the race rather supporting what makes the most sense and what stands as best practice for Vidcon going forward from here.

Sargon and the rest of the Shitlords weren't being intimidating, they weren't being aggressive, they weren't being anything. They sat there, silently, filming and watching. She saw him in the audience, and instead of ignoring him she antagonized and insulted him. While you could argue that having three rows of Shitlords in the from of the audience, you could equally argue that them being their shows they're willingness to listen and participate. Since they weren't threatening in anyway, and no videos either for or against her has come out yet, her response to seeing Sargon was clearly harassment. In fact it could be argued that any future negative response from Sargon was prompted this harassment, mirroring her argument here.

Anita Sarkeesian has been the victim of harassment, online abuse, and death threats for literal years. The man she called out has encouraged that kind of behavior towards her. That context is important when considering both her behavior towards him and VidCon's response to it. They explained to her that she violated their policy, but they also understand the context of her situation. Yes, rules and policies are important. However, context is equally important.

Hank's response was very calculated and diplomatic, in order to piss off no one a lot, you piss off everyone a little bit. I think they maybe didn't understand the depth of the situation, in fact I believe they say that they weren't aware of it. They are taking that very middle ground approach of not disciplining everyone now, and will have more well defined rules in the future. And they are gonna get hate from both sides, both thinking they should have taken one side harder. As for my opinion, I do feel Sargon and company's actions were aggressive and could be seen as an attempt at intimidation, the image of a mafia don and their enforcers showing up at an event of someone they are at odds with comes to mind. That doesn't in any way excuse Anita's actions, as if they felt threatened or intimidated they should have had the organizers deal with it. If you haven't watch boogie's video on the subject I suggest you do that, it's clear that Anita is an aggressive person and is very paranoid about what people talk about and how they say it. Whether this is a result of her interactions with people in the past isn't really relevant, her actions are her own and in both cases they were unwarranted but not egregious enough to warrant her being kicked out of the event.
So a panelist insults an audience member and swears at them...and all they did was sit there? Did Sargon attack her verbally or otherwise? If not, Anita just got away with public embarrassment and harassment. The VidCon runners let this go with the ever-so-often-used "He deserved it" clause. As others have stated, if this was reversed Sargon would've been removed, banned, and his channel flagged or removed. She's disgusting.

TrumpCat I don't even think he said that. From my understanding, everyone of that community that went all agreed to not say anything or snicker or anything like that. Granted, they also didn't clap for her, so it was a sort of silent protest, but even then one isn't entitled to being applauded.

What the Greens did is absolutely disappointing and what Anita did was disgusting. She harassed an audience member who had no platform to defend himself at the time. Anita is not the victim here, she is the perpetrator and should have been punished. Threatening Sargon and others is terrible and the Greens should be ashamed of themselves.

That being said, the rumor before any kind of statement was issued is that "the organizers will side with Anita because they're biased towards her". And I thought.... nah... they have to be coherent. And they also implied that those people sitting in the first three rows had "fake passes". That being said, and knowing Sargon is the most prominent name (and youtube channel) as the voice of "anti (third wave) feminism", exposing flaws in their arguments, having a full 4% of his videos dedicated to Anita (30 in total, spread by the course of several years)... yeah, I dont buy it. They flipped this on the victim. And now it's his fault. And that excuses her abuse, and disregarding most of the questions in the Q&A session. All they forgot to add was "maybe if he dressed appropriately this wouldnt have happened". Messed up.
Alais: Took me this long to answer you because I was listening to Boogies video regarding this issue. You can watch it here (v=3qEwRZ0PziA). Yes, she flipped at Boogie. But they talked it out. That part was not told. Even tho I do not like Anita, nor I respect her attitudes, or her business model, in all fairness sake, she at least sat down with Boogie and talked it out. Have you even tried to watch one of sargons videos about anita? first of all he hasn't talked about her in years ever since gamer gate because she is irrelevant but even when he never "harasses" anyone he uses facts to disprove bullshit. Actually your temperaments seem quite similar people calling him scum for anita is the same as daddy of 5 fans calling you scum for that.

Now let's look at Sarkeesian, who got $150k+ claims that the entire series is for "educational use" and refuses to debate anyone on the bullshit she's spewing. Remind you of anyone or anything? It sure does to me. It reminds me of religious fundamentalists and cults. Two groups that refuse to debate people, but attack them personally. Those two same groups which viciously attack others who leave. You can see this with the absolute vitriol that Laci Green has been subject to by the same people who praise Sarkeesian.
