The transplant becoming standardized is SO MUCH MORE MASSIVE than most people probably realize, especially in an era of stem-cell grown replacements where entire organs can be replaced with new, non-donor, "grown" ones. Now what remains to be seen is whether or not the head-transplant in Russia in December is a success.. because if it is, that truly means we're in a completely new era, a golden age of medical innovations.
@ehgotbored

I don't know anything, but if they are just going to connect tissue and nerves like the hand, would the guy be alright mentally? Is connecting the nerves all it takes to regain consciousness? Would he have the mind of a newborn until he worked to strengthen a connection, like the hands? Is it possible for his body to receive all the signals to keep his body working but nothing else to show he is still there and thinking?

Isn't the procedure to be done in Italy by an Italian surgeon to a Russian patient?
@focalizzate
@focalizzate 7 лет назад
Just a clarification with stem-cells though, in most cases you do need an organ donation. They remove the original donor's cells from an organ (leaving only the extracellular matrix), and repopulate it with the patient's own stem cells. This lowers the risk of organ rejection, but by no means does it eradicate the need for organ donation. Complex, dense organs with high vascular activity (heart, liver, lungs, kidneys) almost always require a donor even for stem-cell infusion. Research extracellular matrix tissue regeneration for more info.

I forgot about the dog. It's so unnatural to see a dog moving it's tongue when it's just a head attached to machines. I wonder how they'll keep this guys brain alive during the transplant. If they use life support machines, wouldn't it get in their way when reattaching everything?

That's what I said and the problem with their maternity leave is that they have to ask permission even to have those jobs, it saddens me as the women's march have picked a sponsor that is so beyond reasonable debate. Honestly I would love to have a sit down debate and walk her through the logic of what she is saying. And actually we need to remove government intervention in all things and foster personal responsibility so that we can really make sense of the "maternity leave issue"

It's simple, forget the things of the past. That's how they want us to think. To forget the trooper that was killed. I don't think that would be easy for the family. And besides, Shakur is a fugitive, so it's so foolish to just take it like that. Perhaps is she's still in the prison suffering for her crime, then it would be a bit easier.

Playing the nazi card, but saying we should honor Assata Shakur for her work in civil rights with regards to race and gender is like saying we should honor the commitment of the medical scientists at Auschwitz towards progressing the research fields of medicine. The ends cannot justify the means if you ever hope to truly have the ethical or moral high ground. Arguably one of the largest figures for the civil rights movement, I believe MLK Jr. achieved so much because he emphasized non-violent protest, civil disobedience and grassroots movements over violence.
@Gitami

@Lhorez

James McIlhargey and where would Nelson Mandela fit in your morality scale? From Phil's depiction it sounds like she's pretty bad but it can be complicated so some research is warranted because it sounds like there's more to it.

@ Dale Gribble reading that statement in your voice is hilarious
@jgmrequel
@jgmrequel 7 лет назад
+Lhorez I'm a bit shamed to say I don't know a lot of his history, something I'll definitely rectify. That said, after a cursory review, I feel like the Umkhonto we Sizwe was not the sort of organization that I could support given their methods - bombings and torture are not appropriate tools. He did serve time for these crimes, he achieved quite a bit from a civil rights standpoint, and his path to violence was not the beginning of his journey but one much much later. Is he an important historical figure? absolutely. Were his goals moral and just? Definitely. Should we hold him in high esteem in the same respect as the twitter user was holding Assata Shakur? I would be hesitant given the violence of his past and I would think his life's work should be considered on the whole. In a comparison between him and Assata, he definitely scores closer to MLK Jr than towards Assata. Mandela never tried to escape his responsibility from what I have gathered so far. Mandela was also fighting a different government in a different culture against a different level of racism. Based on all of this, the best I can say is I think he's done a lot of good with means that were good, but they will and should be tainted by the violence of his past as well. If there are any good recommendations for historical accounts of Mandela that would pass Phil's standards, I'd love to add them to my reading list.

I'm Saudi and I live there, we are seeing change, a very good change and progress to become better, Prince Mohammed bin Salman is making great and huge efforts, I can see in just a few years women and men will be given their rights(yes even men too but I acknowledge that women have it worse). The problems we are facing in becoming a more of a developed country is not small at all, some decisions must come in the right time from the King himself so that the ones opposing and the ones calling for such decisions know that this is final and there is no turning back, and once that happens, no one will oppose such decisions. also a bigger problem is a small (but loud) minority of those calling for change are doing it just for the sole purpose of using it against us as a society to demonize us and to make younger generations hate their families and using such horrible cases of domestic violence to back whatever BS they have. We havent been in the best situation, but I do like where we are heading as a country. one change at a time.

Hello Duxitisation, I'll talk about the ones I remember, 1- we started investing in other sources of income other than oil and the growth was bigger than we thought, even salary bonuses are coming back. (the government stopped bonuses and allowances sometime ago to keep the budget stable) 2- a Royal decree was announced to inaugurate new young ministers to take the position of really old ministers, this move itself gave us so much hope because those ministers who happened to be older in age didnt know what citizens needed and to be honest, most were corrupt. 3-before, any one from the royal family or extremely rich was untouchable by law, this is not the case now, just two days ago a young prince committed a few crimes (beating poor people and drinking alcohol) was caught by the police under the order of the King himself. (and there are many cases of rich fucks being caught by the government for the crimes they committed, this would never have happened before) 4- we have a whole new organization that is funded by the government (I guess) and its job is to provide entertainment, we have many social/cultural events now that people can go to and have fun at, also theatre is coming back thankfully and there are endless rumors about Movie Theatres coming. I can talk endlessly but I dont want to waste your time, but I want you to know that I as a middle class citizen, who's in his 20s I can see a brighter future, we are finally moving forward not backwards and for the first time ever in my life I see a Prince on TV talking with high transparency and criticizing our weak points as a country and how we can improve, that is Mohammed bin Salman (the son of the King) its reassuring to be honest.

"When you villainize people that contest your points, you will eventually find yourself surrounded by enemies *that you made*" Well said, Phil. I agree with Tapper here. I'm not a fan of cops, but shooting them makes you as bad of a person as if you shot anyone else, unless one was trying to rape you or something like that obviously. Celebrating someone who murdered a cop, no matter how you try to justify it, is still celebrating someone who murdered a cop. I hope that doesn't make me "alt-right," because I don't know what I'm supposed to believe if I suddenly become an alt-righter.

I know this, you know this the spoiled brats who have been indoctrinated will regret the ideology they hold when...not if, but when, the civil living/civil government bargain is shredded. Being a Saudi woman I personally gave up on change in Saudi and currently trying to find a legal way to stay in the U.S. Even though I come from a partially liberal family with liberal father, brothers, and currently husband, I see how women themselves are against change, and unfortunately I see that in my own mother! The women of the old generation were deprived of opportunities and instead of fighting for their daughters to gain opportunities, they are continuing the cycle!

Thank you for that lovely story Phil about the young boy who got Sepsis. My grandmother nearly died from Sepsis a little over a year ago. She was on life support for two weeks before she could breathe on her own, but was still incredibly weak. It damaged her kidneys and caused her to get Type 1 Diabetes when she previous had Type 2. Luckily she did not have to have any parts of her body removed and has recovered very well. I am so happy to hear that the young boy was able to recover so well and have hands again. Thank you for warming my heart today.

I know it sounds insensitive but I thought getting into a mishap with cops wasnt enough for Assata some person to burn at the stake. considering the fued between civil rights activists and the police force in that era. It wasn't untill i looked up the faction she was apart of, and the crimes she's committed where i found why people were opposed to her. I guess im just wondering why she's such a prominent social justice figure. are there not other women who fought against racism and sexism to rally behind who dont hsve such a controversial past? A guy made his own air baloon for research purposes. it flew off before it should have by accident, and one of his kids claimed to have had seen his little brother in the baloon so everyone panicked. He called the police, news channels and such for help. However the baloon was empty and the police claimed the man had staged the whole thing for puplicity. When he refused to having done so, they even threatened with possibly deporting his japanese wife. In the end he "confessed" to it in order to save his family from a lot of pain. More and more proof of him being innocent has surfaced in recent months, because the police chief has been caught for corruption.

Keep fighting for equality and a end of racism and religious controlled states in the Middle East it will do wonders for the whole region. Continue to push for a modern 1st world country with the same rights and freedoms.. You will get nothing but support from white people and asians around the world.. africa less so.. Because they are themselves a way off understanding their own problems. Hopefully it won't take much longer for the youth of the middle east to put everything right and reject the religious zealot control over people, law and politics. Its down to you kids.. We're all waiting for you on the other side. Trust me the whole world wants the middle east to reach 1st world status and equality.. Only the religious zealots in these countries are denying you your possible future free of war and anger.

You hit the nail on the head (on your first story). The Left (far left?) are so anti-talking that anyone who challenges their ideas, calls them out, says anything contrary....instead of sitting down to a rational discussion, they label as Alt-Right! Nazis! Racists! Biggots! (etc. al.). Now, I am a left leaning veteran but I am sick that the "Left" refuse to debate while I hate the "Right's" refusal to budge. I'm with Johnathan Pie on this one. The LEFT is why we have President Trump now, not the Right. Refusing to engage in discussions and knee-jerk name calling are now synonymous with the Left movement.....and it's helping no one at all.
