Coal Train Chase Ended by Ice - Frozen Trains & Horns on the Port Road and Amtrak NEC

Rare daylight freight trains on the Port Road and Amtrak Northeast Corridor have been more frequent lately so I when I heard a coal train coming I followed it as far as I could until the weather intervened along Amtrak with a series of frozen high speed trains passing our camera in the inclement weather.
It was a fun day along the former Pennsylvania Railroad, or what I call "the land of poles" due to existing and former electrified track, with scenes from what is now the Amtrak Keystone Corridor, Norfolk Southern Royalton & Port Road Branches, driving under the A&S, and Amtrak Northeast Corridor.

I have never heard a frozen ACS-64 horn salute ever like that before. That sounded so alien-like to hear.

Yeah when I heard that coming it spooked me a bit. I'm thinking a frozen air line or something caused that.

I’ve always wanted to see Amtrak and/or MARC use Port Road for DC/Baltimore to Harrisburg passenger service. It would be a beautiful route along the river and also good for regional connectivity.
@jaysmith1408
@jaysmith1408 2 года назад
Amtrak has used it for their leaf trains, but other service would involve PennDOT, which is absolute rubbish at anything productive, so unless Amtrak forks over the dough, which they won’t, or Marc operates it, and they can’t, it’s not the not gonna happen list. A state capitol to national capitol in two hours would be major brownie points, but nobody in Harrisburg is intelligent enough to take a train from two blocks from their office, to one block from their meeting.

Nicely done! You deserve a lot of credit for venturing out on that obviously grey, cold, and dismal day, but in a way it just added to the atmosphere. And thanks for the look at the Perryville environs! Driving up and down Route 95 I knew it was downriver somewhere and always wanted a look, but never had the time to stop. Fun video, and it went by quickly! Maybe a little too quickly but you know the old show biz saying: "Always leave 'em wanting more!"

Even though I haven't really got the full swing of camera in terms of most settings and manual control modes just yet, it has been a big step in video quality! Sadly those wires were ripped out when Conrail took over because the government was in the pockets of big oil and now they wonder why these days we are having trouble getting electrification back...because it's so expensive to do it over from scratch ...if it weren't for the government all of Pennsylvania could have been electrified today.

I believe the entire Harrisburg area has ATCS on the air You should be able to see all rail traffic locations and the signal indications
@CentralPennRailProductions
@CentralPennRailProductions 2 года назад
It does, that's how I know when there is something lined down the Royalton Branch or Port Road. There is no ATCS below CRES though.

Out of curiosity for I am interested in modeling parts of the Keystone Corridor. Besides local trains, how common was it for thru trains to run on the Keystone? I have noticed this(coal) and intermodal in your other videos.

What are the amber lights on the side of 7689 for? Lead locomotive markers?
@CentralPennRailProductions
@CentralPennRailProductions 2 года назад
LSL (Locomotive Speed Limiter) Lights indicating that the LSLs are active on Cab Signal territory, required for movements over Amtrak. This system pre-dates PTC, but function in conjunction with cab signals, so that if the locomotive speed exceeds the cab signal indication, there will be a warning and the Locomotive Speed Limiter will slow down or stop the train with a non-emergency brake application.

So since there’s two ways to get to the port road branch, why do some take the Enola branch out of Enola yard and why do some take the royalton branch?
@CentralPennRailProductions
@CentralPennRailProductions 2 года назад
There is a fuel pad on the Harrisburg side of the river, so trains not needing to go via Enola will often go the Royalton side and get a new crew at the fuel pad while they top off the engines. Trains that go Enola side often work the yard or there are no immediate crews available and sit in the yard until there is a crew available a few hours later, usually at night.

Interesting that including a passenger car makes the light engines a train and affects the speed limit. Is that due to the extra braking effort added by the passenger car or just some random rule?
@wayneantoniazzi2706
@wayneantoniazzi2706 2 года назад
I believe that's the rule, hang a car on the back of a locomotive and it's a train.
@CentralPennRailProductions
@CentralPennRailProductions 2 года назад
Yeah it's in the rule book, I'm not too sure of specifics as to why though, I'll have to look it up again.

@CentralPennRailProductions 2 года назад
Yeah in September of 2019. I misspoke though, I meant to say decommission the remaining reactor, not "reactors", because Unit 2 has been decommissioned since the incident in 1979. They are doing a slow cleanup of the plant which will take 60 years because they are letting the protected radioactive materials decay on site before moving them away.
