Good talk 👍 The question is how tochange the system and wrestle the power and money away from the oligarchy without breaking the system completely. I don't believe exproptiation or confiscation without compensation, or nationalisation, would be good ways but create another set of problems that may be worse than the current.

Not all white families became rich under the apartheid system. Only the elites. After the British Boar war the white Boar families ended up with nothing. Many ended up with no or little schooling. They taught themselves to read from the bible (the only book they had). Children had to leave home young in search of a job. Any job to support the household. Very similar to the poor these days. They grasped any opportunity to learn and they saved what they could for a better future. Nothing comes from no effort. Not defending alpartheid. Just saying we were also down and out, and large numbers of us still are. The elites don't care about the normal people, just their own wealth. Ironically we must all die one day and we can take nothing with us. But we will have to explain our deeds while we were on earth.

You need to address the problem og government corruption, which makes it impossible for the government to fulfill its role in successfully functioning, high-growth economy. This is South Africa's worst and most intractable economic problem. A corrupt government cannot assure the sanctity of contracts or provide those services to the public that require the activity of the state.

I don't agree with privatising everything but the state must fairly compete in the economy (e.g. state bank) and decentralise the common infrastructure e.g. railway lines. At minimum private public partnerships with the state owning a controlling stake.

Thanks for introducing me to the book! It would be intresting to talk about what policies and practices in the SA context are extractive and hindering/hurting our countries development and what are inclusive polcies. Example: Housing market: the government has policies in place that make it very difficult to get a home loan. The banks and lawyers also charge exhorbitant fees for registering a bond and transfer fees. Inclusive practice: I think BEE was met to be inclusive. but I wonder if its backfired? Banks and financial institutions are making it now much easier for the common mad to invest as little as R100 in ETF's, stock's etc which used to be limited to a priviledge few with both knowledge of the system and the financial means to benefit from it.

After apartheid's exclusive economy and then the last 30 years' exclusive economy, I really hope we will start a true inclusive economy. If all non socialist parties work together as it appears they are willing to do now..the future of South Africa will be GREAT.

A macro economics lecturer in varisty once told me that SA has simple complicated problems. The key to our success are well functioning SOEs thats all we need. Unfortunately thats a complicated problem but if solved. Double digit economic growth is a reality.

Taxation, commercial law, entrepreneurship and investment management should also be compulsory subjects from grades 8 to 12 as a module of money management

Hundreds of police officers have been deployed to KZN for ANC's imaginary violence when there's real crimes that needs this kind of attention all over South Africa

BBBEE is an example of inequality in the free market capitalist system. Instead of addressing inequalities of the past it has created a new elite class who wasn't ready and set the table for high levels of corruption, low quality, low productivity and poor service delivery. In the end it is leading to more inequality, i.e. higher unemployment and lower foreign and local capital investment. Education, the correct education, is key to a successful, equatible society where where equality of opportunity is the main driver, not equality of outcomes.

I’m worried that you seem to worship the authors, we should always critically examine publications and approach them with a healthy dose of skepticism (Especially as African people, we fail largely due to the cia interference in our countries) How is the success of the nation measured by the authors? What is an example of successful nations according to the authors? Capitalism creates inequality and sadly the majority of the poor people are black, Capitalism is responsible for a lot of the evil that the world is seized with today.

So the majority poor must create their own BRICKS. About 30 years ago i found myself in a meeting where they discussed a new financial system to counter this extracting system.

I had a manufacturing business for 31 years but had to close because of cable theft and NUMSA ....my unionized employees at the time haven't worked since 2017.
