Day 4 of solo hiking the Coast to Coast, I left Chapel House Farm & discussed what happened early that morning with a disturbing person, not wanting to dwell too much on it, but I needed to get it off my chest.
I carried on with my day as I would, wanting to appreciate where I was; my favourite section of the Lakes, or the country for that matter.
I left Borrowdale for Grasmere, both stunning places in their own right, albeit with a hellish climb between the two... Lining Crag.
In the intense heat of the late May heatwave, I ascended the steep, rock face of the dreaded crag using both hands to pull myself up onto the jagged rock with my 17kg backpack making the effort absolutely gruelling.
Once on top, I thought one peak wasn't enough and I was already up high in the fells, so I continued up three more fells, the Wainwrights; Calf Crag, Gibson Knott & Helm Crag, before finally descending into Grasmere.
Once in the stunning village (aka my actual favourite place on the planet) and near the point of total exhaustion, I decided to treat myself to a lovely room at the Lake View Country House & a delicious meal at The Good Sport. It was exactly what I needed after a tough day, and would end up being one of my favourite days on the whole trail!

Another thoroughly enjoyable video, I can understand how you must have felt being a lone female with that nutter on the campsite. I like hiking alone but I can understand why you get lonely sometimes. Your video is inspiring me to do this walk in the future

Thank you so much, and yeah sometimes it is a little scary & lonely, especially when I get in my own head too much. But for the most part I love it and can never get enough 😁 and that’s lovely, I hope you get to do it some day!

As a solo hiker you will spend the next ten day passing and being passed by others you meet on your Journey to RHB. I know I did from time to time but as an early riser I was often walking the trail well before the other hikers were out of their sleeping bags, but I did enjoy a midmorning/lunchtime break for an hour to let others catch me up as most of the people I met along the way were half my age. Being in my mid 40s when I first took up hiking after I left the Army some were surprised that someone of my age would still be hiking. After telling them of my past hike I think they were shocked that someone so old, (their words not mine) at 45 yrs old, would still be able to complete hikes like the Coast to Coast. That is when I told them I had already completed the Pennine Way twice, a Lands End to John OGroats and a John OGroats to Lands End Hike and the longest Hike I ever done, so far, was the Complete Coastlike of the UK hike. That other campsite at time stamp 13.26 is run by the local farmer and is one I always stay at when I am in the area. Very tranquil, but a bit further out from the Hotel Bar, but nearer to the campsite in the Stonetwaite Pub. Tony in Essex

Gorgeous video, Grasmere holds a special place in my heart as we had our honeymoon there in1980, also I did the coast-to-coast in 2016 but I took the easy route down through the valley, so hats off to you for taking the high route!

Grasmere is stunning and it’s my happiest place of all happy places ♥️ congrats on doing the C2C yourself, even doing the ‘easy’ route is still a challenge! I think this is one of the only times on the trail that I took the high route to be honest, I went through the valleys for the rest of it 😁

This is a great series. I came down lining crag from a wild camp at stickle tarn and headed for Keswick. Tricky descent and seen a few hikers going up with carrying big bags. Hats off to ya.

Thank you! Lining Crag was hell, I do wish I filmed more of the climb but it just wasn't safe to do so, I pretty much needed both hands at all times 😂 I already want to hike the C2C again, though I know I'd be dreading Lining Crag haha, although the fact that it's the bridge between Borrowdale & Grasmere makes it so worth it :)

Thank you, it was so awesome to hike through this section in such lovely (but hot) conditions ☺️ in so want to go back, especially after the winter blues, and yeah the guy in the tent got kicked off the site after a few people complained! Pete (another hiker) found my channel and let me know this as he stayed behind after I left

Hi Jennifer, great video of what must have been a very peculiar walk, you are remarkable in that you walk so many miles on your own as do a lot of other RU-vidr ladies. You all have my upmost respect and good on you all. Grasmere is beautiful as is the Lake District. We are hoping to move there or South west Scotland next year, can’t wait to be part of the Beaty of it. Cheers Glyn.

Enjoyed watching that . I think the person at the campsite was mentally ill , you will never be able to make sense of it hopefully he will get the help he needs ... all the best .

Thank you, and I agree. He had issues for sure and he does need help. I was just in shock that he was causing a scene because I was putting my tent away & exposed himself at a family campsite

Haha, to be honest that section was the only time I opted for the high route on the trail when given the option. I chose the low route for the majority of the trail following the Lake District section, and I definitely recommend doing so, especially after Keld as you wouldn’t want to miss Swaledale 😍

A small update, after you left, the couple in the red vw camper van complained to the campsite owner. They knew the owner and had stayed there quite a lot. The unpleasant and angry weirdo was thrown out of the site!

l guess wild camp when you can then you have plenty of space and privacy and dont have to risk being around loud or annoying people

That’s true, I think I still had some anxiety about wild camping at the time, despite wild camping plenty in the past, it sort of came out of nowhere.

Oh thank you so much! And I think so, late May seems to be the best time for walking in my opinion. It’s warm but not too hot (though on this occasion it was too hot due to there being a heatwave!) the flowers are in full bloom & lambs are out and about ☺️ it’s the perfect time of the year

Looks like you were walking during the heat wave we had May and early June 23? I was walking The Dales Highway at the same time - backs of my legs got so much browner than the fronts as I was constantly walking north with the sun behind me.

Yes I did, May 22nd to June 3rd! Oh my god it was hot! And awesome, thats some pretty good going! That's about 90 miles isn't it? Would you recommend it?

@@Orenjen it's a grand walk, Saltaire to Appleby-in-Westmorland. It's a route you can do and use the same hotel for a few times as it intersects with the train and yiu can use the train to g back and forth each morning/evening. Crag Rat Outdoors does a good set of videos on YT on his walk.

@@Orenjen I'd watched so many videos of walking the C2C before setting off I knew most of the route without any guide (although I was in a guided group) - the bits that got me though is where there is not much to video, especially the bit on the NYM where the Cleveland Way turns off and you follow the old railway to eventually reach The Lion Inn at Blakey Ridge - it goes on for miles but no one really warns you as there isn't much of interest to stop and video.

That's so true! Honestly what a slog, but somehow I didn't exactly dislike it (that I can remember). I think I got bored of the same old moorland for hours on end on a seemingly never ending track, but I somehow kept myself entertained. I don't remember exactly how much of it I filmed, I seem to remember my phone and GoPro battery at critical as well as two dead power banks, so probably not that much for those reasons.@@richardhunter7363

Hi, I hiked this from May 22nd - June 3rd ☺️ And spiking is drugging someone’s drink, it happened to me October 1st 2022 and was a reason I had to leave work early the next day (I still went into work because I was worried about getting into trouble ironically as my manager knew I was out the night before). Basically they didn’t believe I was spiked and let me go (I’d been there for 10 months so the union couldn’t do anything about it). Turns out they let me go because I was in the process of unionising my colleagues and I naively wasn’t very quiet about it.

@@Orenjen Yeah I figured out after watching a few of your coast to coast and Lake district walk's that you were holding it in your hand, I have the gopro hero 7 and was using it on top of my helmet on scooter runs but find the battery dies quick on long runs, am looking at getting a chest holster for my walks, I usually use a selfie stick but would be easier with a chest holster or shoulder strap that can go over your Bergen/ back pack shoulder strap and your hands are free when going down step hills sides do you can support your self and break your fall if need be
