Thank you viewers for all your support! Reached 1,000 subs a lot faster than I expected. Thank you so much!
Out in Half Moon Bay foraging seaweed to make nori. First attempt at it, so it wasn't perfect. Let me know any suggestions to improve it!

Great vid. A more sustainable way of harvesting seaweed is it cut the seaweed at the base instead of just ripping it off the rocks. It can regenerate, as apposed to pulling the whole thing off with no further possibility of furthering new generations of growth.

Try dropping the temperature down and cook slower/longer , actually you only want it dried not cooked. 100-150 F . Or use a food dehydrator . In New Zealand we call it Karengo "Car eng o" , that's a short o sounds like OR not OH. The Maoris traditionally dried it in the sun and took it with them on their travels with dried fish. Nori/Laver/Karengo has 9 times the vitamin C of an orange and heaps of Iodine. My fav thing is to cook Muttonbirds aka Sooty Shearwaters with dumplings and Karengo.... oh yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!! Try it with smoked Chicken. And Uni we call Kina ,ours are bigger and green and coming into the season to gather . Kina are tasty when they leak a milky "Fat' liquid from the roe.I marinate them in lemon juice and raw onion then you can eat them or add coconut cream and make a kind of "Pacific Island" raw fish recipe by adding bell peppers, chilli ,lime,ginger and all those yummy things you like yourself . Love your channel :-)

Knife is life! I’m binging your foraging videos because this COVID pandemic has me freaked! I’m hoping to find some wild edibles in my area (Los Angeles) because it’s getting pretty difficult to find produce at these grocery stores... but also, I just find foraging for wild edible plants is just good practice and a lot of fun when hiking. Thanks for the vids!

I shouldn't be watching these videos every time I do I get uncontrollably hungry and for the time being I can't drive because of spinal injury and recovering from a surgery on the arch of my foot ! When you're making these videos I can feel that sea breeze I can smell whatever your cooking and my mouth just waters as you plate everything that's enough to drive me insane with hunger so thanks yet again for making me hungry ❗❗❗

Love your channel, cooking and the outdoors are my thing. I always wondered about cooking with seaweed. It seems all is edible if delicate enough? The one you called sea lettuce also comes in a white variety. My father said it was good for ulcers.

Wouldn't doubt it, seaweed has even known to cure cancer! Pretty much all edible, meaning non are poisonous. Definitely some are better for consumption than others.

Love the stuff. It would be great if you could do a video that covers which seaweed NOT to collect- either because it's unlawful or protected, because it may be poisonous, or if it's from an area that has too high pollution levels. It would also be helpful to know which seaweeds are technically edible, but aren't quite sought after or palatable for which ever reason.

I'm not sure if I'd ever try to make nori sheets for sushi either since it's so readily available now days. However I really like the idea of making my own crunchy nori snacks, seasoned to my personal taste, for munching on. Much healthier than chips. In fact, I love adding good amount of extra seasoned nori to my bowl of ochazuki then pouring in hot steaming green tea. You just gave me another great idea to try out so thank you so much for sharing. I don't live in CA but when we go there for vacation, we normally frequent the Orange County coast. Do you know if laver grows in southern CA?

I think you should try a pestle and mortar for the seaweed. That will create a mash which will bake into a sheet. I’ve never made my own nori, but I am a pastry chef, so I know some about these things. Also. I live near Santa Cruz and have been wanting to learn costal foraging for years. Any tips?
@OutdoorChefLife
@OutdoorChefLife 6 лет назад
ahhhh! Pastry is my weakness in the kitchen. Sounds like that would work. It'll at least lessen the amount of holes. I'll have to try that, thanks!! If you wanna learn about it, I would recommend 'the sea forager's guide to the northern california coast' by Kirk Lombard. A great book for coastal foraging around our area! and another tip, just get out there and see what you find, even if you don't know what it is, you can ID it later.
