It took several days but our walls are now connected to our ceiling. Seems like a small task but it wasn't. We also had a little visitor which made things take a bit longer...LINKS//

Yey! The cob walls in the solar office are DONE! Wonderful you guys! I hope the temperatures are more comfortable! Cob the mouse in and it will die and it will smell bad a couple of days but then it will dry up. This happens in our hundred year old farm house in our duct work. We can't pull all the ductwork down to get the dead mouse out. They get caught in the ductwork and the metal bends are too slippery for them to get out and they starve to death. Nice sunset on the mountains. I'm glad you caught the mouse!

Looks like you upped your game on the cinematic music video interludes. I particularly liked the slo-mo cob packing near the start. Very tactile. The solar array at sunset was of course visually stunning. Really nice work and Congrats on all your progess.

I busted a gut when you said, “it’ll be done in no time”. Here’s a legit question - why not hire a swarm of mud daubers to help with the walls? They’re pros after all, and probably cheap labor. You guys are seriously killing it with the videos! Awesome family, informative, entertaining, great music and editing, and that dog…that dog is funniest, goofiest dog I have ever seen! Sorry Netflix, you have been outclassed by a bunch of dirt baggers. I’ll be transitioning my subscription.

I love you guys! You crack me up! By the way, your shed looks like a house. It is beautiful! I also don't like to kill things but when an animal or bug comes in my home, I tell myself "If I went into a bear's den, the bear would kill me." If an animal/bug comes into my house, sometimes I have to "get rid" of it.

Moth balls will keep mice out… also seal it with steel wool., lol, ,,, if you want to that is. And you Could Throw the moth balls in the walls and the mice and wasps will leave.. When you get your doors on your mouse and wasp problems will diminish considerably…PS I also hang moth balls in an old sock and hang them around the frame of my RV. I lay moth balls around my trucks on the ground too to keep mice from nesting. I’ve lost wiring on my truck because of the mice. I’m a desert dweller but I’m not willing to share my space with them

if you have access to free rocks, build two gabions -about 3 feet diameter/3ft tall- around the tall corner posts of your solar array. They won't go anywhere, and also adds some flash flood proofing. Nice video today ! I've built gabions in areas with spring flooding and they haven't moved an inch in 30 years.

Eucalypus essential oil on a cottonball works better. It destroys their sense of smell. Place them where you dont want mice to be especially the animal feed shed.

Ants can be a pain but they sure are nice when something dies inside your walls. I have found they come in drive you nuts, but when they are done the rodent will be totally cleaned up. I have to put cotton soaked in vinegar then wrapped in foil then put in balls around in my cat food bin. Borax kills all insects eventually so you have to be careful with the good bugs but I use that a lot also. I love what you are doing, even though its "just a shed" you are putting so much into detail that I would back anything you all build.

Put a temporary door on the shed.....because the mud wasps think you built it just for them and if they don't already have a few nests in the wiring holes, they will. Oh and if you have screens for the windows, that would help. And when you finally done you should make a don't do what we did when you build a solar shed video, explaining the large time gaps between start to finish. I know life happens but we're moving into 90+ days of solar shed.

just a thought about the solar panels and the water, taking advantage of the water with leaving the cracks because of the sail aspect, what about plants that could be put there that may require less sunlight then normal or the whole partial shade thing. Could be a use of the water with minimal modification.
@TinyShinyHome

@pepelepew4117
@pepelepew4117 3 года назад
Actually that is an excellent suggestion. At the Biosphere run by the University of Arizona, they were doing experiments of planting garden plots under solar arrays with shade tolerate plants. They found that it was a very symbiotic relationship. The morning dew on the underside of the panels helped to feed the plants, and the plants helped to cool the underside of the panels making them more efficient!

Awesome job with the added benefit of a mud based skin treatment that people pay a fortune for. If the mouse can't get out it will die, it means no other critters can get in and it will only smell for a short time. I live in a forest with lots of critters which occasionally die in close proximity. If I can't find them the smell is gone in a couple of days and, in any case, our olfactory systems seem able to cancel out strong background smells, presumably so we can smell anything new which might be a problem.

For the ants. The holes (colonies) that you want to get rid of, mix up 1/4 cup powdered Sugar, with 1/4 cup Baking Soda. Sprinkle this about 6 to 8 inches away from the hole, all around. When the workers haul it into the holes, it will kill the whole colony in about 24 hours. You might have to do this twice (with about two weeks in between) before the hole is dead, but it does work. I got rid of a hole this way three years ago (after trying everything else for years), and I have not seen a single ant around that hole yet.

For the ants, have you tried just straight rubbing alcohol??? We had a bad ant problem and also a bad bedbug problem... For the bedbugs we used the rubbing alcohol in spray bottles and over a 2-week period several times a day we soaked everything in it... A year later and not a bed bug to be found... For the ants we did a lot of the same the alcohol helps to wipe out their chemical trails drys out the live ones until they die, but the key is to drown the nest in it... We did that by just poring it down their holes, that was last summer and still no ants so far this summer... Yes it's a bit expensive but being free of harmful insects is to me worth any cost...

Hey there new friend! I'm not sure what you mean by searing and baking the walls...we'll be plastering and sealing it, though. Final coats will use something like linseed oil to harden the wall and protect it from moisture.

@@TinyShinyHome I was wondering if it would be possible to use fire to seal it. I dunno if it is made from clay. Just go over it with a flame. I don't know much about it so maybe it wouldn't be possible. I know it is possible to make wood waterproof this way. If it is possible, it would work out really well for anyone who does not want to use any kind of chemical. it is 100% natural.
