*Please read the description* F the critics, I love both of these movies. And yes, I've seen the original show. Yes I like it. Yes I like the movies. Yes I love the original Cobra Commander. Yes I love movie Cobra Commander as well. Yes I think he looks fine in The Rise of Cobra.
I'd have loved a third film either showing the birth of serpentor or the storyline of the animated movie with golobulus and nemesis enforcer could have actually got Sgt slaughter in as a camio
They got high paying job with dental insurance and have 30+ day free vacation on evil island which is basically tropical paradise not to mention recreational torture.
I love that Cobra Commander has a loving family, good friends, and generally a decent life. There's no reason for him to be evil; he just loves kicking puppies because he's Cobra fucking Commander.
@@kevynhansyn2902 I can totally see Urban watching this movie and saying if people responded well to him as Commander despite not seeing his face I can do Dredd and actually keep the helmet on the whole movie.
@@dannytheman1313 well Rise was in 2009, and Dredd was in 2012, than Retaliation was 2013 (full masked CC), so there's time balance there. I forgot which came out first actually.
@@kevynhansyn2902 If I remember Retaliation was actually supposed to come out in I think June of 2012 but got pushed back to almost a year later. Still can't remember why it was pushed back.
I actually liked how they made Cobra Commander a former member of Duke's team. It shows that there is a deeper connection between the two of them than their rivalry being based solely on the fact that they're the poster boys of their respective groups.
I prefer the sequel this intro was too comedic. It did have potential but went off the rails feeling more made for kids intended to sell toys as was the original cartoon.
While yes, the Retaliation CC outfit is accurate to the original look, the RoC outfit is actually accurate to another Cobra Commander as well- the then recent Cobra Commander look from IDW. They just gave the mask eye holes + breathing additions, and replaced the sweater with a metal chest plate.
Cobra Commander is a great villain. * He's a competent leader with the respect of his minions * He has no tragic background to make him a sympathetic villain * He knows exactly what he is doing and owns his evil actions * Despite being "Defeated" by the heroes, he's been running loops around everyone for two whole films
Original CC is tragic and sympathetic, but still a monster. His backstory isn't framed as justification for his actions, it just is sad. This one's is also, but sillier given the sister and best friend angle.
I loved seeing Cobra Commander in the second movie. All of his henchmen were happy to see him and welcoming him back to the base. You look at the joes and in comparison Cobra had better HR lol
Dude, Cobra has hidden R&R bunkers on tropical paradise islands that they REGULARLY send troops. I'd get shot at by lasers too if it means me & mine are set for life. After all, Cobra just wants to dominate the weather...
Gotta give credits to the designers to modernize Cobra Commander's old design. This new and improve suit of his is awesome and with added snake noise everytime he speaks
@@ArcTrooperRod-269In addition to hisses, you can sometimes here rattles in there as well! And, in RoC, sometimes his mask makes a noise when it's drawing in oxygen, a noise which sounds slightly like hissing! The GENIUS of these films is incredible.
Not enough credit is given to Joseph for selling such an over the top characters so well. He really commits but still allows himself to have fun with it.
The Zeus scene redeemed the whole movie. Cobra Commander's edginess is so absurd, it gives you a pure joy. And not to mention the Brotherhood of Nod vibes.
They should’ve not only had brought Stephen sommers to direct the sequel so it could’ve been consistent with rise of cobra, but they should’ve casted Michael Wincott as the voice of cobra commander as his raspy voice works way better than the earth Vader knock off voice. Also, G.I. Joe should just crossover with the alien and predator movie franchise as I want to see cobra use xenomorphs as weapons and joes having to fight off the xenomorphs and the predators that are out to hunt.
@@ultracarterzilla6939 A crossover with G.I. Joe and Alien would totally work, actually. That way, it’d feel a lot like the closest to a live action Contra.
I just love how in the movies, Cobra Commander is a SUPREMELY effective and successful leader. Even while he was still horribly injured in the first movie, he managed to gather together so many like-minded people and literal corporations under his wing, all without alerting anyone in the outside world. He even let Destro be the 'face' of the public side of things for a good while before revealling that he was the actual leader. Having said all that, I really really hope no one like that appears in real life... Ever. The destruction they could wreak would be enormous, and there wouldn't be a ultra-lucky Joes with mountains of secret ultratech weapons to match him. That's only in movies.
@Arc Trooper Rod-269 yeah. He's a monster to anyone who opposes him, but to his own troops -- even the Neovipers who he can literally control like terminator robots, but who volunteered FOR that, knowing the result -- he values them. He might not value them enough to not consider them expendable, but... clearly he's connected with them.
@Ali Caval I'm trying to stay in reality thanks. I'm more worried about a tinpot dictator or a politician who thinks they deserve to be Emperor unleashing horrific damage to the world with push-button mass destruction weapons.
He's honestly the only actor who knew what the assignment was. He played his 100% straight. He's a big over the top villain and he owns it. If only the rest of the film was as good as him.
They really managed to keep it true to the original design, while also modernizing it and making it look good in live action. A bit like the MCU did. Usually comic/cartoon outfits translate rather badly to live action. There is a good reason why the X-Men movies went with leather instead of blue and yellow spandex. And when they adopted the original outfits, they still went with a more realistic design. Or while Batman's most iconic recent design went for more modern armor than a typical comic outfit.
The most unfortunate part to me is that the design for Cobra commander looked amazing. Really was hoping we’d get a third movie so we could have more scenes with it.
1. DESTRO IS ALIVE, HE JUST WAS KICKED OUT OF THE BAND(& the explotion only destroyed the front room) 2. It wasn't a creative Choice, It was a requitement from Channing Tatum, he didn't wanted to returned & they didn't want to recast him after recasting Cobra, so they just Killing him up(at least he died as a hero saving Flint & Roadblock)
@ArcTrooperRod-269 All that is quite true, as Destro is never shown to be killed on screen. It is actually quite likely he is alive, as though the temperature around him in the prison was rising, the tube he was imprisoned in is programmed to keep the same temperature. With the world's deadliest man, Cobra Commander, having just broken out of the prison, the feds and officers would have been all over the place within the following few minutes or so, finding Destro theoretically within the next hour or so. He may very well be revealed to be alive in the next film, should it ever leave production hell. And yes, Channing Tatum's contract was only set for two films, so it was an obvious decision to set up, and then focus on a new main lead with Dwayne Johnson as Roadblock and his inherited team consisting of Snake Eyes, Flint, etc.
Cobra Commander is just straight evil. He literally has no reason to be this way. He survived the bombing and came back and thought "You know what? I want to conquer the world." He could have just come home, sure he's scarred up but his family and friends wouldn't have cared if he was. In the comics its even funnier, being a car salesman for years until he thought of the idea of starting Cobra, somehow creating a terrorist organization large enough and dangerous enough to take the whole world to his feet.
I think it was a genuine "I can put these resources to better use" kinda thing. Plus, check out his eyes when he says "I discovered something". He's like 95% lost it inside his head. But that "bad seed" was always inside him. Just buried VERY deep down. But that airstrike probably messed with his head along with his body.
1:16 The Doctor 2:35 Doctor Rises 3:42 No Hair The Doctor Rex Lewis Cobra Commander 5:08 Doctor Syringe Destro 5:55 Cobra Commander 6:38 Cobra Commander Prison 7:20 Old Cobra Commander Zombie 7:30 Dr. Rex Lewis is Back 7:44 Cobra Commander Mask New
12:41 honestly that was pretty spot on. I get why they didn’t go with the high pitched voice, but I would’ve loved to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt do it for the actual movie.
He just gets more impressive the more masked he gets. I really don't feel much for "Rex Lewis"... but the more he loses himself into becoming Cobra Commander...it just feels better for him, as a character. Who he is, or was, under the mask no longer matters. He IS Cobra personified. Anything before that is just kinda... bleh.
Some characters are better when you know them before they go down a darker path. Cobra Commander is different since he has had many origins and sometimes there have been a few Cobra Commanders take up the mantle in the comics. In one comic, he is a salesman who gets into a crash. I feel like they could play with that. Show us a Cobra Commander who founded the organisation before being killed. He is then replaced by a more competent one who is seen doing more. Also they could show Old Snake.
Interesting how in the cartoons the main bad guys always have higher pitched, crazy voices but in live adaptation they always have these deeper modulated sounding voices lol. Sounds good don't get me wrong and I enjoyed the movies(except that last one from a few years ago lol) I just find it hilarious how Cobra Commander had a high ass voice in the show and a deep ass one in the movie 🤣
People were (rightfully) angry with Cobra Commander's design in the first movie. But his design in the second movie is just pure, beautiful, badassery! Even if you never read the comics or watched the 2D series, you gotta love it
People just didn't understand what the first design was going for, they took the most recent Cobra Commander design at the time, the idw one, and have him eye holes in reference to his og hooded look. Second time around they went with something more obvious 😆
At least we still got a little Snake Eyes and Cobra Commander action, like it's a challenge to make it happen seeing how Snake Eyes is a master fighter, meanwhile Cobra Commander is more of a master planner, though he does have some fighting skills.
You know what I find absolutely hilarious? Rise of Cobra: Meet James McCullen. The head of M.A.R.S. industries. *Face* of Cobra and pretend main villain. Cobra Commander has been using him for his resources, money and biding his time to stab him in the back and reveal that he is the true mastermind. He eventually does turning McCullen into his right hand man Destro. He was his puppet metaphorically before but now he is his puppet literally. Complete with an electro collar. Retaliation: “Destro… you’re out of the band.” Like.. seriously 😂
10:09 The way he says that is disturbing, as you’re reminded of the young, optimistic, and good hearted soldier, And seeing how twisted and psychotic he became.
W/ the breathing apparatus and monocle it’s a good fantasy villain voice, when Rex reveals his identity to Duke he sounds very close to Christopher Collins’s Cobra Commander and when he says, “You will call me Commander.”, moving forward he sounds like Author Burghardt’s Destro.
I'll stand by RoC's design of Cobra Commander. His partially-transparent mask looks cool in its own right, and he came across as a more modern day Darth Vader with his deep voice and breathing apparatus (6:02). Plus he had a nice uniformity with him, Destro and their henchmen all being chrome-domed lol. (Also I just noticed his left eye looks blinded, which would explain why he had the "monocle" as the Doctor.)
I love when adaptation movies that are sometimes, if not fully mediocre, are able to capture some of the characters in their best forms. The aced the commander and then some in Retaliation.
For all the rough patches in these movies, the cobra test part to show of the nano tech is so well conceived and executed. Such perfectly, delicious villainy on display.
Wait, Joseph Gordon Levitt was Cobra Commander in the old G.I. Joe movies? Damn, he was true to the character, I didn't know the guy played a villain. And this was before Dark Knight Rises, so a villain became a hero later. Paramount is setting up a Transformers/G.I. Joe shared universe,(something they wanted to do years ago, but Bay directed Transformers back then), they might as well have Joseph back in the role. Especially with effects being far better today.
The fact that Cobra Commander's men are so casual with him. These guys LOVED having him. It's so rare when a villain actually has henchmen that would serve him faithfully with such RESPECT and mean it.
Cobra Commander had the jigsaw voice and it made him sound real bad ass not all cartoony and cheesy like he was in the cartoon series. In the animated series Shredder, Skeletor and Cobra Commander had very wimpy and whiny voices they sounded very sinister but silly. The movie versions of Shredder, Skeletor and Cobra Commander made them more scary and bad ass with strong and bold voices that sounded more serious and threatening. Say what you want about Masters and GI Joe but the Skeletor and Cobra Commander were the best part.
"It's good to have you back, sir." Man, I love villains that have the genuine respect and admiration of their henchmen. Makes more sense than villains that rule their subordinates through fear.
Thanks for this wicked compilation, he is literally the best fucking character out of both films and the entire franchise, When we see the Doctor become Cobra Commander for the first time, it was a total shock and awesome surprise, His role is so amazing in both films !!!
Yep. Destro's tech was CC's work and it didn't take much for him to 'usurp' Destro who was mean to be the 'face' of the organization until the time is right. Not to mention Storm Shadow and Firefly went to break CC out and him alone, not Destro. They also refer him as their commander immediately, implying they've been working for him for a while prior to the first film. If anything, it was clear CC was the boss since day 1, but he let Destro took the stage where he gathered resource and like-mind individuals into Cobra. The fact he didn't seem to bother getting caught and imprisoned was because only his front, Destro's arms deal company, that took the hit.
Very cool! Storm Shadow was my favorite. It's been years since I've watched the first one and haven't seen the others but Joseph Gordon Levitt is a good actor. I'm glad he got his full helmet in the sequel too
Man, I LOVE Storm Shadow! He's great in the movies as well, his actor was very passionate about the part. Yeah Really loved Levitt in the role, you can tell he's having fun with it. When first presented with it, he saw the costume he would wear, thought it was the coolest thing ever, and signed on immediately. Seriously, that's all it took. The silver mask in the first movie was cool, but same, I was so happy to see the new, cartoon inspired helmet in the sequel. Thanks for watching oc!
@@rheubhenncabizares9912 Serpentor is just downright silly. He's arguably one of the most difficult characters to adapt, based on his look and origins. That's why he's been excluded from all G.I. Joe since the 80's with a few here and there exceptions, such as some comics, and being represented as a giant snake in G.I. Joe Renegades.
What I love about these movies is the fact that even though there were mid, they were enjoyable enough to age well, to be irreplaceable and has established its solid fanbase who genuinely like the movies. Something like this don’t happen anymore after late 2010s
Cobra Commander was probably the only good thing about these movies. I hate how they gave the Commander a whole-ass backstory and proceeded to do nothing actually interesting about it besides ' Oh, he went insane because he felt betrayed'.
Well it wasn't for nothing, it connected some of the characters together in a way unlike before. It revealed that Rex was really the cause of all their problems, both the earlier ones, and the current ones they where facing in the movie.
@@Blotzwave because they don't need to be connected outside of being enemies. G. I. Joe is about advanced troops fighting advanced terrorist. You don't need any connections outside of that. Just make the heroes worth connecting with and the villains worth rooting against. All tht love story, nd oh cobra is my lost brother, is exactly what went wrong with the movie. The action was what made it money. The last thing that comes to mind when I see Cobra Commander, is Baroness' brother. Dukes old friend. Its senseless at worst and lazy at best.
@@deadpool2349 Well why not be connected? It can make the dynamic more interesting. Optimus and Megatron have a history. Obi-Wan and Darth Vader had a history. And those extra bits make the overall dynamic between characters interesting. I don't see how the love side plot and Rex Lewis story made anything go wrong. G.I. Joe originally had love plots, and the Rex gave Cobra Commander an origin that wasn't "Oh btw there's a secret race of snake people who put him up to everything, and he's a 9 eyed snake man." It made money because it's G.I. Joe, which includes action, as it should.
I wish they gave him the classic voice. Part of the reason why Cobra Commander is so iconic is because he's an intimidating supervillain woth the squeekiest voice you'll ever hear.
The classic voice was actually considered, but the actor of Cobra Commander didn't want to do it, because he felt it would be "cheap" just to copy the voice work of another actor, especially one who passed away of heart issues.
I think this is a great example for why it is better to be loved than feared I mean look at the lengths the entire organization went through to get their Commander back, plus keep working on his grand schemes without him there (or expectation for when he’d be back) His men really seem to take pride in their work too
@@ArcTrooperRod-269 Oh absolutely! I really like 5:55 as well, it had the theater applauding and it's obvious as to why. That entire scene was just awesome. Almost every line out of his mouth is some epic, villainous one-liner.
@@ArcTrooperRod-269 They really where. Levitt was excellent, He enjoyed the part as well, and it shows. I understand why he decided to go with movies like TDK Rises over returning for the sequel, but I was still initially skeptical when I learned of the actor change. However the Bracey/Baker team was fantastic! Bracey, with enough makeup, looked enough like Levitt did, and his suit was great, and Baker's voice sounded like Levitt's CC voice, just slightly altered due to it being a new mask. The character was just so well done by those guys.
