Great video! thank you for sharing your experience. I have both and have noticed a decent power increase and still maintain 50 mpg average!

Great review Rob! I just bought a 2014 1300 Deluxe that I plan on upgrading with the Cobra intake so I appreciate you posting this video.

no need to spend money on slip ons, just take a heavy duty pipe that fits into the exhaust, you will notice when you look into the exhaust that there is a plug. what you want to do is hit it with the pipe until you puncture through it. Works better if you remove the back piece of the exhaust since you need to hit it kind of hard. I just did it time about a month ago and have noticed a great improvement on both sounds and throttle response. Enough to remove that slip on muffler out of my cyclegear cart lol... also I'm hear because I just purchased an air flow kit along with the cobra fi2000, hopefully it was worth the investment

@@TheRoboticwolf13 The ECU reflash would have been a much better investment than an fi2000.

Drill your factory baffle out. It's just a little bit louder than stock and will significantly improve fuel economy and performance. I've done this on many 950's and it works really well. Use a hole saw that just fits in the pipe and take the guide bit out of the centre. Drill slow and be ready when it goes through, the catalytic converter is behind there. Edit* I should mention it takes 2-3 tanks of fuel for the computer to relearn the new power characteristics, you'll notice it continue to improve during that time.

Appreciate you taking the time to do the video. I see you have already been asked about the noise it makes and your response included that you wear earplugs. I ride the same bike with stock exhaust and am not really interested in any additional noise either, but I don’t wear earplugs and can hear the wind etc. and am fine with what I’m hearing. So what I’m asking, Rob, and it is the only reason I’m hesitant to do the upgrade, is whether you or others out there think it creates enough additional, or even worse, an irritating noise that would cause me to want to kick myself for having done the upgrade. I know it’s subjective, but perhaps you could give me some odds for success. Take a stab.

The air intake makes a slight hissing sound that I can hear at idle, but at speed I don’t really hear it over the wind. The engine also makes more volume after the mods, and I assume that’s from the engine generating more power per stroke from the improved fuel/air delivery. The increased engine volume seems to be the same tone as before, just a bit louder. I ride with a guy who has a V-Star 900 with aftermarket pipes, and his bike is WAY louder than mine. I can’t ride this bike without earplugs, but that was the case before the mods, so I’m very sensitive to noise. Ultimately it’s always a personal decision when a bike gets too loud to enjoy, and these mods do make it a bit louder; but the improved performance from the air intake and fuel injection controller (especially in combination with mid-grade fuel) have made my bike faster, snappier, and it still gets around 50 mpg.
@jamesweber4938

If you do the intake you will have to add an aftermarket fuel processor or have the ECU reflashed.

Good luck with your modification! I found that the factory dial settings were a bit too low for my setup, which also included the air intake and stock exhaust. I turned the dials up 1-2 higher, and the bike runs great, but that will depend on the intake and exhaust combo. I still believe that my setup runs better on higher octane gas, but I guess that’s a controversial issue.
@jamesweber4938
@jamesweber4938 2 года назад
The ECU reflash is a better way to go. Plug and play with no adjustments whatever the mods.
@morningstarx5340
@morningstarx5340 Год назад
I know I'm late to the party but you have to run 91 or better in that bike because of it's compression. Higher octane pump ges does not alter performance, it only allows you to raise the compression which then helps performance. That bike calls for 91 or better, but if it did call for 89 and you put 91 in it, there would be 100% zero change in actual performance.

@danstromness5165
@danstromness5165 Год назад
I don't think that there is a huge market for cams, for the 1300. Have not heard of any after-market cams. These are SOHC systems anyhow. The BEST improvement one can get is by reflashing the ECU, like the Ivan-Flash. I initially went with the Fi2000 and Cobra Dragsters. The pipes were too loud, so I fitted them with Cobra Quiet-Baffles. I had a few extra-$$$, so I did the Ivan-Flash. There was a bit of improvement over the Fi-2000, and solid improvement over stock.

@Travels with Rob What would you happen to have settled on with your 3 settings? I just ordered mine and I am also ordering an aftermarket air intake system so I figure that should put us in the same ballpark as far as the settings go.
@travelswithrob4970

Mine are set to 2, 3, 3. I don’t do a lot of hard pulls, so I haven’t tried going higher on dial 3. A reviewer in England has posted an extensive test on all three settings, in case you haven’t seen it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cNtQfCUnIk4.html. Get rid of the fuel processor & get Ivan’s ecu flash. Best thing you can do to these bikes.
@travelswithrob4970
@travelswithrob4970 3 года назад
That's probably another good option. However, I looked at the torque/HP curves on Ivan's site, and I think the Cobra intake + tuner mods give just as good (or better) improvement in power. Plus, it's a fun DIY project!

Great video. Is there cruise control? Are there aftermarket options available for the windscreen? Thanks!
@travelswithrob4970
@travelswithrob4970 3 года назад
As far as I know, there is no true cruise control available for this bike, just various types of throttle locks. I tried the BrakeAway, but found the adjustments to be too fussy to work well with my Iso Grips, so now I just use a simple Go Cruise 2 throttle lock for brief wrist relief, $31 on Amazon; many other similar devices are available. Regarding the screen, the stock batwing fairing screen is made of polycarbonate, which is extremely hard, strong, optically clear, and undistorted; it’s far superior to acrylic, so I would not change this. I did make two additional modifications: I cut the screen height down by 2” because the edge was in my line of sight, and I added a Goldwing vent and custom aluminum lowers to reduce helmet buffeting (see opening photo). Have fun and ride safe!

Hey I have two questions for you. 1st, what do you have your nodes/ dials on the fi2000 set to? My first one is set to 2, the second one is set to 3 and the third one is set to 8 1/2. I noticed 8 1/2 once I get the RPMs high the airflow really kicks in. 2nd Are you knowledgeable on the app for the fi2000? I see people have it but I can't connect to it.

@@travelswithrob4970 Oh wow, he provides a lot of information. All of the aftermarket parts were already installed when I bought it, so I'm playing catch up. I have kuryakyn hypercharger, the Cobra slip on 2 to 1 and the fi2000. I'm not sure if it's the one that will connect to the app. I was just doing research. I love having that powerful pull because of Atlanta traffic. A lot of times I just need to get out the way.

Does the cobra air intake make a lot of noise?
@travelswithrob4970

I can definitely hear the air intake, but it’s not so loud to be a problem, and I always ride with earplugs. The engine also make more volume after the mods, especially when rolling on throttle, but that’s the trade-off to get more power

stock vstar 1300 runs .4 seconds under the 1900 road liner so his is probably just as fast now I would think.. I'm sure he gained the .4 seconds, wouldn't be any different from what hes on now. my 1300 out runs my buddy 2019 harley street glide 107 so if he wants something a little faster might need a sport tour or something.
