Can we recognize how good the actor who portrays Hawk/Eli is? He can play the nerdy, shy and vulnerable kid, but also the badass Hawk (not a spoiler, because they already saw 6 episodes ahead), and make both personas believable. Kind of like how Christopher Reeve was able to make us believe he was the wimpy, Clark Kent, but also the confident and charismatic Superman. That is not easy to do as an actor.

Don’t we all wish we have Hawk’s flip the script moments in our lives? 🦅

Ppl like the tough coach and some ppl like the nice coach. I got called fat and a loser during Marine bootcamp and I loved proving it wrong and becoming something better. Doesnt work for everyone tho I get that. I like the not coddling aspect to prepare for the real world. Good point you guys made tho on Hawk not needing to get a mohawk. He just needed to own it. I was a fat kid from fifth grade through my freshman year in high school. I was bullied for it, especially in grades 7-9. I wouldn't change that for anything. I know that nothing less would have inspired me to change. The bullies intended it for harm, but they got to see how it turned out to my benefit. Decades later, I'm still in great health and great physical condition as I see my overweight family members dying or struggling with diabetes, high blood pressure, and a low quality of life. It is unfortunate that bullying happens, but I am happy it happened to me. We should encourage people not to bully, but we should also teach people how to handle it when it happens. It will always exist, so people need to know how to use it to their benefit.

Johnny is learning as he goes along. And sometimes, the kids are the ones that do the teaching. His character arc is great over the seasons. Actually, everyone has character arcs, sometimes for good, sometimes for not so good. There is only one character who never seemed to change, even up to season 5.

You're not supposed to really agree with Johnny, but you can see the shimmers of truth and light coming out now and again until he realizes he still needs to shed more skin to become who he is truly meant to be. So there's moments of clarity and sense in what he says, muddled by internalized toxic things he learned.

What Johnny is teaching his students is...confidence conquers deficiencies! He is teaching all the outcasts that they are only outcasts because THEY VIEW themselves that way. Society will treat you how you put yourself out there, so don't go thru life being weak and portraying weakness.

I think you can treat this like a live action anime. Everything is so heightened especially in the seasons to follow. It’s just so ridiculous but in a good way. Just don’t take it all so seriously.

I think the show does a great job in reimagining cobra kai as a way to empower powerless kids. As adults you can take control of your life because you have time and if you work hard enough oppurtunity in the states to become confident and powerful. Kids don't have any control because they don't have time on their side nor do they have the ability to choose how rich or poor they are. Life will throw incredible punches at you; you need to be able to take the insults and persevere. Too many safe spaces create soft people.

Suraj you are correct but being able to accept and love your own flaws is still a "change" which is the point, the process of becoming better requires some form of change, no matter how you push it you can't keep being the you that was bullied.

Cruelty is torture. cruelty is teaching kids they are what they arent and can have what they can never obtain, only to let reality smack down those implanted dreams. Telling people who lack self awareness exactly where they stand is mercy, it is kindness. you arent being nice by lying.

It's complicated. I know what it's like to get bullied at school and at home. And while i can say the hole bullying made me tough enough to handle school bullies. It didn't really help ke build confidence in my teens. Tough love is fine, but you also gotta know when to prop your kids up. We see both sides here. Johnny's tough love works for Miguel and Eli. Because they've been made soft. But Daniel's gentle approach helps Robbie who never had support at home.

Yall need to hurry and get to season two that’s where it gets crazy

I gotta admit, my reactions towards Johnny are mixed. As an adult, I can appreciate Johnny's methods and efforts more at trying to toughen up the kids who have been made way too soft in our society and if the kids cannot handle a few insults by the teacher, how in heck will they ever be able to get through the training that requires mental toughness as much, if not more than, the physical. Many sensei's have to drill mental toughness into students and sensei's nowadays are even more merciful and wary of boundaries than many old-school masters from many decades ago were, where students actually even got "beat up" by the teacher. However, I also gotta admit if I were a high school kid, I probably would also be wondering, "what did I get myself into??" and "Why am I even here??" once I started hearing Johnny throw out all those insults and not back down. But, part of me would also understand or justify to myself that Johnny was just trying to weed out the weak ones who just want to look cool. I think Johnny does cross the line many times, but it's mostly because he is like a fish out of water who does not know any better. If it were me and I was a high school kid in his class that first day, I think I would give it as least 2 more classes before I make a decision on whether to bail or not. I think I would know instinctively as a kid that this is what I need at the moment to toughen me up But, more importantly, I think I would still stay just based on what I saw in Miguel's fighting abilities and his recommendations. I would not think Miguel stayed as a student of Johnny's if Johnny really was a bad person who did not care about him.

Everyone that supports the way Johnny teaches kids the way he does at this point of the show is/will/would be a terrible parent. It doesn't matter if he has good intentions or not, you're supposed to act your age and teach kids accordingly. You can make kids stronger without bullying them, calling names and being an asshole.
