The most adorable thing is that she's actually so light that the weight of the egg throws her off balance for a second, she did such a good job!

To make things clear: Touching female cockatiel's back may or may not result in egg laying. It's totally up to the bird. For example, my cockatiel gets hormonal everytime I touch her back (mostly accidentally, because I really don't want her to lay the eggs) regardless of whether it is spring or not. Some cockatiel's might get hormonal, but get discouraged, because they don't have a nesting spot (as the creator mentioned, their cockatiel lays eggs anywhere, once again, it's up to the cockatiel, if they want a good nesting spot or they don't care about it), they don't get enough minerals and don't get enough sunlight (that's why most cockatiels don't nest during fall and winter).

It sucks that nature gives them eggs even when it's discouraged in many aspects and they can't even be fertilized, but it still happens to plenty of birds. I have a male so I've never had to deal with this but hope you find a way to help discourage it enough to get the eggs to stop forming :)

It's so weird to think that there are creatures who naturally seclude themselves almost daily to plop out a small/medium sized oval surrounded by somewhat durable armor that can either house something yummy or a child...birds are strange yet interesting creatures

We had a new batch of chickens hit their first lays around Christmas. I don't know about the parrot family, but chickens have been bred to produce unfertilized eggs on the daily. Christmas morning I go into the coop and one of our hens was having a hard time, so I stayed with her. Huffs and shuffles and the eye twitches with gargled squawks of "what is happening to me!?!?" for over half an hour and the family thinking I was nuts missing presents... I went to check the progress when the egg fell into my hand lol. The next morning that hen flew onto my shoulder and wouldn't leave, even when I went into the house or shooed her, she flew right back up and I had a bird larger than my head on me for a solid 15+ min. Laying eggs is hard work. It's the same amount of work and pain for a fertilized or unfertilized egg. Almost makes me grateful for periods as a compromise...

I had a cockatiel. Thought it was male. Then one morning there was an egg. I always thought "he" was a little too into me. Then I woke one morning, she was quiet, and I looked and she was lying in the corner of the cage. She had died during the night. I miss her.

This reminds me of a cockatiel my sister had when we were in high school. "His" name was Louie, until "he" laid nine eggs! Like the one in this video, the eggs were unfertilized, so there were never any baby birds. Louie got very vicious and protective of her eggs, though.

Poor bird. Looks like it takes a lot of energy from them. And they have to deal with this all the time like with humans to periods.

It’s awfully sad that even though you’ve apparently taken every precaution to try to save her from this unpleasant experience, her body is still working against her.

When i was younger my cousins had a tiel i loved named Hank, he was such a sweety and i loved flying him around their living room (: but after about a year with “him” Hank started laying eggs everywhere lmao. I was really young at the time and of course didnt reallt understand birds as pets that well, from what i understand now tho my cousins didnt take great care of hank and she passed away way sooner than she should have, but that doesnt change the fun memories i had with her perched and cuddling on my shoulders as a kid (:
