I love that she knows he'll probably outlive her and she's making plans for him to be taken care of it that happens. Wish more people pre-planned for their "other species" children.
@@lethargic_cow Thanks : ) We don't have one...my son was just passing through when I was watching this and made the comment from videos on these birds that he's seen, and I thought that it was funny as well as insightful!
"I wonder what happens to him when I'm gone" is something all of us parrot guardians worry about. It's so hard to find someone who will care for them and love them as we do.
My dad has a 50 year old Amazon and he's 70. She used to hate me and even tried to sneak in my crib and kill me, lol, but once I moved away and came back after 6 years she clearly missed me and loved my new children. Which is great because she would be willed to me. There is nothing quite like a bird that lives long enough to witness generations of your family, all the changes, losses, ups and downs. I love Doodle Bird.
It makes me sad for the birds to think about how much they will miss their loved ones when they pass. It must be hard for them to live so long just to have their humans die before they do. 😢 In a perfect world we would all have our fur and feather babies live lives filled with happiness and security for all of their lives.
I’ll definitely take care of him. I always wanted one but I don’t trust any breeders who sells them. I had two sun conures someone gifted me and they passed because they were old. One died 1st then a couple of months the other one. Then I got a Quaker from my mom’s Quaker couple. He still with me and his everything. Talks, laughs and barks😅. I have 2 dogs and he mimics all their sounds. He’s just a member of out family. We even take showers together and go for walks. I’m 32 years old and feel capable or taking care of this bird. I have 2 kids, one is 16, the other is 12 and at this point I’m not going back for another baby. A bird will be my best bet. Sometimes my kids go out and I stay home alone….”Barbara” could be my companion. So if you ever feel you don’t know what will happen to him when you’re gone, I can be the one who can adopt him 😊
Delightful! I'm an Australian, and have flocks of wild cockatoos in my area. I love watching them at twilight in spring and summer as they are very sociable and natural comedians. There are always a few individuals doing tricks to amuse themselves and the group. They're loud when they're talking together, but it sounds glorious when they fly over in a huge group, their voices an attention grabbing birdy orchestra, and their white plumage a wonderful sight against a bright blue sky. God bless you all, especially grandma Barbara ❤️🇭🇲
Yes, I love them flying in together, a sure sign of coming rain. We've got many where I am and the usual kookaburras and magpies, I can't think of a nicer way to wake up, it's truly gorgeous. My sone lives a block from me by parkland and he's the same, he loves hearing them first thing in the morning. We are blessed with so many beautiful native fauna.
I live in America and you just gave the most interesting fact on these birds in the wild that I’ve ever heard and I can almost visualize them. You are Blessed to see this.
Live across from a football oval. Wake up every morning to bunch of these shitheads screaming and carrying on. Mischief and noise. Best comedy show on earth.
I'd love to see that cloud of cockatoos against the blue sky. Here in Chicago I hear woodpeckers in the morning in my neighbor's gigantic tree, Blue Jays , crows, Cardinals, chickadees, red winged blackbirds O , slate colored juncos, purple finches, Goldfinch, grackles, Starlings, blackbirds, crows, Robins, sparrows, mourning doves,an occasional Hawk, ducks and geese and sometimes during migration a hummingbird or two. What other birds live around you?🐦🦜🦚🦩🦤🦢🦆🦉🕊️🐧🦅 oops, I almost forgot pigeons that hang out at the church ⛪ on the corner. I could do without them 💩 😑
My Mother’s name was Barbara. I lost her around 3 years ago. All of my pets loved her as well. I guess it’s a “ Barbara Thing”. Thanks for this post. What an awesome baby you have. Obviously your Mom isn’t too shabby, either. ❤️
My granny's name was Barbara & my Min Pin and my mom's Pekipom both loved her. You'd say, "you wanna go see granny?" and they'd get so excited! May they all rest in peace.
Any Cockatoo raised in the way Chris has obviously been raised is capable of the same. They are highly intelligent and sensitive. When the trauma of being rejected and passed around from home to home robs them of so much of their innate qualities. Just like a child. Chris is an extremely fortunate Cockatoo. Much appreciation to his human companions.
You would be surprised. I'm not as much of a bird person who can call out specific breeds on sight, but I do know there's TONS of bird types that can speak it's taught language up to about I think 5 years old child. This guy is obviously one. The most striking and sad story (that you can look up) was a bird actually testifying in court 😭 he witnessed the whole thing and would frequently repeat his "Mom's" last words and cries. Poor baby bird was so traumatized. 💔
@@mom.left.me.at.michaels9951 If you’re talking about the bird that re-enacted the murder of Glenna Duram’s husband, the bird 🦜 didn’t actually testify, although the prosecutor considered it. Glenna gambled away many thousands of dollars, destroyed her and her husband’s credit and put their home into foreclosure. I believe that she killed her husband (and failed at killing herself) so that he’d never know how she had destroyed their lives and so she wouldn’t be prosecuted for her crimes. Glenna is now in prison for life (😃👍) and the hero bird is living with the murdered man’s ex-wife.
@@EYE_GOTCHA Wow! Thanks for that, I might Google it for further reading. I'm honestly not sure if that's the case or not. I wish I could remember the channels name but I pretty sure the bird was an African Grey? The channel was basically it and it's rescue mom after the fact. But that poor bird was haunted and said some very strange things. Would hid in corners and just yell abusive stuff it had obviously heard way to many times at night. His mom would have to find him and calm him down with cuddles and "you're safe here". That part just always really broke my heart and stuck in my memory. I may try to find and link the video where she does a q&a about why he did those things and talks about the specifics of the incident and subsequent after math. I could have just made an assumption that it happened instead of considered. It was a long time ago. I really hope there's not too many similar stories. 💔
You know what, I'm actually suffer from chronic depression and looking at Chris video, I was thinking he was really hilarious and we had the same strange sense of humour....
These birds have a very long life. And it’s true, it hurts them deeply when their person dies. I truly hope with all my heart, that the two of you stay together laughing until the end of both your days. Love to you both.
That bird has more personality than most of the people I know!! He's full of life, happiness, and every other trait more than anyone else I have met ❣️❣️ I really enjoyed that and I hope to have an awesome day after this ❣️❣️😎
I rescued my current birb from my friend who got it from his parents. He would leave it in a cage alone from 5am to 8pm. I watched it for a week when he was on vacation and birb never left.
Jamie from BirdTricks finds this particular type of cockatoo a real challenge, and I can see why, lol. Super smart and demanding which is why so many lose their humans over and over again. Anyone who is breeding these beautiful intelligent birds for the pet trade are setting them up for (in most cases), a very unhappy life. Here's hoping Chris gets to remain with you.
Yeah, she had ONE experience with an Umbrella cockatoo, and decided to badmouth them for all eternity. Very unprofessional. She made a video in which she acted all paranoid over her own Galah, exagerated everything. She is a bird trainer. Their motto is: saving lives, one bird at a time. She should add: except for cockatoos, because they can go f*ck themselves. Cockatoos are indeed a challenge, but the reality is that people still have them, adopt them and want to give them a forever home, and she just doesn't help them at all. All because of her personal 'trauma'. Hell, I have been bitten so many times by my U2 in the beginning, but we worked through everthying. She should get over herself. I unsubscribed, because I couldn't stand her anymore.
Sorry I brought her up, Jamie was just being honest about her own personal experience, I like that. I nor Jamie are definitely not saying if one of the thousands of cockatoos that have lost their 'forever home', should not be you're dream bird, just be warned. PBS has an excellent documentary in their archives 'Parrot Confidential ', all should watch this very difficult truth before bringing a parrot into your home, much less encouraging breeding. This very kind lady mentioned when Barbara has left the planet, she may consider giving Chris to a sanctuary, there is a good chance Chris might grieve himself to death, I've seen it happen. I think it's wonderful how you feel about your Parrot no matter how many times it has bitten you, not everyone can handle that, so the bird gets ignored and left in its cage, until it is given up or worse. Suggest you research how much sanctuaries are overwhelmed and packed to the max all over America with 1000s of these now homeless beauties. Peace
@@bkm2797 Just to be clear. She was talking about when she dies, not when Barbara dies so hopefully it’ll be many many years from now. It will still be very tough for him though.
@@bkm2797 That is not what I am saying. I know very well of the plight of sanctuaries and the cockatoos that are abandonded, neglected, or abused. That’s why it is so important to offer training and courses to people who have a cockatoo (or want to adopt one), so these birds don’t end up in those already overcrowded sanctuaries when things don’t work out. Besides, she is a ‘professional’ bird trainer; she is supposed to handle all parrots, and not exclude the ones you experience some difficulty with. And I have seen macaws worse than cockatoos in her videos. She wasn’t honest; the whole setup was staged, and she was faking her fear of her own cockatoo. Also, the information both she and her husband put out there is inaccurate. All they do is profiling the kind of person that would get a cockatoo, implicitly trying to find an excuse for their pov. And how could they know about cockatoos?? They never train one, much less spend a long period of time with one. Being honest about the nature of and care for cockatoos is different from letting one personal experience cloud your vision and your responsibility as a bird trainer with a clear philosophy, and subsequently deciding to exclude all cockatoos from you videos or from being a project bird. That is racist to me. I adopted my U2, and I always discourage people from getting one, because I know how fickle people are. It takes so much to take of a parrot. They are not toys, but very much like toddlers that will stay that way for the rest of your life. My U2 is my child and soulmate, and I will always put this health and happiness above mine. Sorry for the rant. I just get so pissed off when people like her talk smack about cockatoos, especially when they don’t even bother to really know about them. By all means, don’t ever sugarcoat it. But be part of the solution instead of adding to the problem by sweeping it under the rug. By the way, I think the lady in the video was talking about herself when discussing Chris’s fate. Barbara might not have long. I hope she finds him another paront.
Oh my god this was hysterical. That parrot is such a little character. What a hoot. Thanks for putting a smile on my face today. All thanks to Barbara lol
Oh MY! I am in love. Yes, i hope he's with you always. (I'd worry about that too because they live so long.) He's wonderful for Barbara and you.. Everyone needs someone, and im happy that you both have him. And he's got you both..thankyou for this today. 💙
All Cockatoos are capable of this level of intelligence, sensitivity and emotion IF they are raised like Chris from the beginning with the necessary skills to meet their intense needs and ability to bond. Sadly, it's not often the case. There a lot of traumatized Cockatoos out there. 😭
This is sooo therapeutic for an elderly person. Omg! Clearly, birds like Chris need attention (and supervision). However, it is amazing to see the difference a pet like this could make in someone who also needs compassion, care and attention. What a beautiful (and yes! very funny) bird and a great lesson for the rest of us. 😍❤
He is so in ❤️ with “HIS” Barbara and family! It will be heartbreaking when Barbara is no longer with them but I think his momma will always treasure their special bond and try to make life as best as possible. I’m happy that she IS thinking ahead about a sanctuary 🦜🕊🦅for him if he outlives her which is always such a sad reality but he has such spunk and charm… he’ll be LOVED where EVER he’ll go!!🥰❤️🤗
I love that she knows he'll probably outlive her and she's making plans for him to be taken care of it that happens. Wish more people pre-planned for their "other species" children.
Cockatoos easily live to 100 so yes he will outlive her. My great grandma had one and it had no feathers it was so old. She knitted him a little jacket.
My African Grey was super attached to my mom... if he got in trouble, he'd look right at me and say..grandmammas helpbird! Sadly, my mom passed away a year and half ago... and it breaks my heart to hear him say that now... 😞
I watch a lot of Cockatoo videos because I love Cockatoos. Out of all of them this is the one that demonstrates the extraordinary intelligence, emotions, awareness, understanding, and yes compassion. As you have had him for 20 years, I infer that Chris has had you as human companion from the beginning, and has never been rejected and passed around from home to home. What a difference the absence of trauma can make in the life of these intelligent, sensitive birds. You obviously give him the attention he needs to thrive. So many people have no idea what is required to bring a Cockatoo into their life. I am thankful and grateful to you on behalf of all Cockatoos. His reaction when Barbara goes to the bathroom is hilarious. My aging dog has recently taken to doing the same. He barks in a summoning manner and sometimes comes in to check that I'm really there and not lying to him when I bark back to say, "I'm in the bathroom!" 🤣 Chris's name is funny. I'd love to know how you decided on it. 🙏🙏❤️❤️😘😘😘
@@christhecockatoo4086 Please put more videos on RU-vid if you can.. Apart from the fact that they are a delight to watch, they are educational because people can see the difference between a Cockatoo that has been raised with knowledge and compassion vs many rescues who've been traumatized and have behaviour and trust issues. The people who rescue these birds are saints. No different from rescuing an abused, abandoned child from social services. It can be a daunting challenge. It is gratifying to see that there many who not only rise to that challenge, but dedicate so much of their lives to provide a safe space with consistency, compassion, and interactive attention. The downside to all these wonderful videos is that so many people say, Oh, I want one! having no idea of the commitment involved. Thanks again for so clearly demonstrating the difference. 😘🙏
@@christhecockatoo4086 I've just come back to watch this video again for....the third time. Its such a pleasure. I love his relationship with you mother. I'm a bit fearful for him after she's gone. He's obviously very connected to her.
I have become low key obsessed with cockatoos and watch so many videos too!! I thoroughly enjoyed watching cockatoo videos here and there over the years, but when I first watched this Chris clip, I fell in love!!
@@christhecockatoo4086 Chris is my fave animal on the internet!! I’ve sent this to all my family and friends! Chris kinda reminds me of myself. A bit ridiculous…❤❤
Awww I just lost my Senegal parrot after 37 years. She was mainly my dad's, but I took her in when my parents passed 2 years ago. Grew up with the trouble maker though. I love all of the video memories you made/make with Chris! I hope there's a Barbara in his next adventure.
Quite a talker. What a beautiful and amazing Bird. His personality and calling for Barbara cracks me up lol 😂 He is precious you have really worked with him. Love the video of his many talents. ❤️

I told my brother if anything ever happens to me that my conures and budgies are his responsibility. He thinks I'm joking but I'm serious. It's important to have that conversation for all living things dependent on you. At least I've planted that seed in his head if anything unfortunate does happen. Hopefully not though and I can continue to shower my babies with love for a long time.
@@msnlitadventures9597 I sincerely hope it works. Please don’t be offended, but make a backup plan. My brother would have done his best for my bird, but it definitely would not have worked. I never did ask that of him. I know he would have tried. After listening to this video & thinking about it I decided to contact my former avian vet about any recommendations she could suggest. She’s only a former vet because she’s quite a distance away. Or check for references from a local bird rehab (wild birds). I ask them to give me their opinion & check the references of those places & check it out. My bird may find a Barbara to be with.
@@bonnieabrs1003 No offense taken. I agree with you. I’m only 30 so my mind doesn’t go there too often but when it does then the first person I think of is my brother. My mom is better at handling them but my brother understands the needs of animals better. I wish I could just leave another copy of myself behind if anything were to happen. I definitely will check with the avian vet and the avian store I take them for grooming. I’m sure they would have some recommendations so I could at least have some sort of idea and make some form of plan in the case something does happen to me. Thank you for your advice.
Having a bird is a huge commitment. Imagine having a toddler for 20 or 30 years! Please don't buy from pet stores there are so many in rescue that need homes!
1:11 Casually shows a picture of Chrissy with former US president Bill Clinton and moves on without addressing it. It was so casual that I see no one mentioning this in the comments 😂😎🦜
Feather-plucking is a reaction to stress. It is a bad behavior and should be dealt with by the use of avian vet!! I briefly had a Goffin's cockatoo whose original owner could not afford a prioer sized cage. He literally had bought just a cockatiel sized cage. That led to instant feather plucking by the young bird and maybe firtunately the young man became allergic to the feather dust. A pet store owning couple rehomed him to a full family. Cockatoos are SERIOUS COMMITMENTS and are not toys! Generally last up to or longer than a human lifespan, so please do not get one unless you have the resources needed to deal with that They are wonderful, intelligent, loving creatures that change your life!!
Yeah I know!! I have a really pretty happy little budgie, I do know it's a big commitment and I am also autistic and birds/animals is my special interest, so i gather tons TONS of info on them everyday :>@@grayfox1422
That's so devastating that she worries about Chris after she's gone. I worried for the last 10 years for my pets. But there are bird lovers out there that could get to know Chris and eventually become an option. My cousin has 3 parrots and she also worries with being sick herself. It is a big worry that's for sure because it's something that is hard for the animal to adjust to....I'm sure dear lady, you will live a long time but if you have the option to make friends with another Cockatoo lover and form a relp, that may ease your mind.♥️♥️...adorable.
When you adopt any parrot, know you are getting the oldest human and the youngest five-year-old kid at the same time. Basically, a Gemini. lol Intelligence and humor for miles. :)
Omg that's so cute and funny!! And he's so beautiful! I'd be more worried about how he's going to react when Barbara isn't with us anymore. I have a feeling it's going to affect him very deeply!
Please don't run to the pet store to get one after this video. Cockatoos are the most difficult pets to keep. They develop behavioral issues very quickly when not given the intensive and extensive care they absolutely need. In fact, they don't belong in human care. Don't support the bird trade. Instead, do a lot of research, and then consider adopting and giving a bird in need a forever home.
I like how he takes the pulp out of the round pea with his tongue and leaves the skin. Lol. As adorable his antics are I couldn’t imagine having a perpetual 2 year old for 60 years.
He's so amazing especially his relationship with Barbara they clearly adore each other! His cute laugh and antics are just too sweet for words I love watching him!
I really think I could love this chatty bird ! Chrissy is quite the talker ! He makes a super companion ! God bless you Chrissy and your family ! Live and love long ! Thanks for caring and sharing !
Animals are wonder companions. I would rather be with my dogs than most people. Their love is unconditional. Chris is so precious. Thank you for the video, I enjoyed it a lot.
Oh my goodness I absolutely love Chris! He certainly loves his Grandma and dancing. He's got a wonderful personality and so smart. I'd rather hang out with him than most of the humans I've encountered. You've done a great job with his enrichment and allowing him to just be Wacky Chris, bless his heart. When my mom passed away, our parrot BeBe ( blue fronted amazon) stayed at the back of her cage for days. My aunt arrived a few days later to settle my mom's estate.
