As a Deputy Sheriff in Missouri, and having watched dozens of your runs, I have a couple suggestions on your code run. First stay in the farthest left lane until you need to be elsewhere. People are taught to move to the right for emergency vehicles. They are not looking for you in the left lane. You are running code. You own the road, be cognizant of those who are not paying attention, but use the space you need to, you're being too nice. Also your siren is not audible from the rear. Those passing you on the left hear a siren as soon as they pass you and then have to attempt to figure out what to do. This slows traffic, which slows your response. Secondly, if you are running code, have ONLY emergency lights running, the amber lights are confusing people. Amber lights will always overpower red/blue in brightness, and nobody cares about them anymore sadly. This is why Missouri made you an emergency vehicle. In my county any tow driver who we allow on a scene MUST be equipped with red and blue lights. We prefer they have no amber lights at all. Third, change your siren tones when you get behind someone, or go through intersections, the human mind ignores what slowly gets louder as you approach as road noise. The rapid change of tones gets attention. The Q siren idea is good, but use what you have effectively as well. I'm not trying to sound like an ass, just giving suggestions which will help you get to where you need to go faster, and more importantly safer. Additionally those with questions on his ability to run code should refer to Missouri revised statute 304.022.

All good points. I've often thought what would really help clearing traffic is to swap out those 4 little LED flashers on the front grille and replace them with 2 double row flashers, right about halfway up. I kind of get the feeling that would put the proper color lights right in line with regular passenger vehicle's lines of sight.

He is correct when I took the emergency driving course from the university of Missouri fire school this is almost exactly what they taught. This was in 1998. You also have to keep your head on a swivel because people can panic they pull over and stop and if you are in the right lane or on shoulders. That truck don't stop on a dime like a car. I witnessed a fire tanker stop and then rear end a car that stopped in front of him. For those of you not familiar. The reason it stopped and then rear ended the car. Was the water in the tank sloshed forward then back actually helping to stop it then sloshed forward again. Propelling the truck forward, overriding the traction of the tires. Moving the truck about 5ft more and into the car. Lucky no injuries and only moderate damage to the car and bumper of the tank truck. But the truck didn't make it to the fire. And we lost the house that was burning. That 10,000 gallon of water was needed.
@MAGWolf
@MAGWolf 4 года назад
Sad thing is people can also tell its not a firetruck or a true emergency vehicle and they will ignore it from that fact as a towtruck I the last needed on a scene usually. Why most states don't allow Red and Blues on tow trucks. That and a lot of private companys tend to abuse it. I know Ron don't but they don't take that chance around here.

I'd like to see the Q as well - that or the Rumbler. Thing is though, a wrecker using code and a fire engine using code are for two different purposes - saving a life vs clearing traffic - in most cases the victims are already being extracted by the time the wrecker gets the call, save for the worst accidents where whole vehicles have to be moved to rescue survivors.

First off glad to hear that the driver was not injured seriously. Second my prayers for mikes dad and family. Last, I heard you ask if it was frac sand and that impressed me. Most people don't realize the difference in material, standard construction/concrete sand locks together and is fairly stable. Frac sand is extremely dry and round in structure, that stuff almost flows like a liquid. Here where I live the oilfield is the main source of income, hence we see a lot of frac sand. That being said I have seen bulk pneumatic trailers roll on less of a slope due to the load shifting. As always you and your crew did an amazing job, stay safe and take care.

As a retired police officer, I would like to Echo some of the comments made by my learned to colleagues and Missouri. When running code, always rotate through your siren box. When you come to an intersection, even and sometimes especially if you have the right-of-way, green light, you still want to rotate through the siren box and or use your air horn. Additionally, do not have Amber lights going when you have Reds, or red and Blues. It confuses people. Having said that, it is not strange to see a wrecker running code 3. In fact, in a lot of jurisdictions, it should happen more often. It is very frustrating as a police officer, to want to reopen a road, but to be unable to because your wrecker is stuck in traffic and it takes a long time to get it there. More States should understand that this is necessary and proper. Awesome video.

Besides the siren one major thing of getting people to move is lights. The best pattern for any lighthead like on the hood is a solid flash pattern that isn't split. You want as much of the light to flash at once as possible. When the lights are set to what we can "Split fail" half or more of the light is off at any given time. Another major thing is sync. The best thing is a left right alternating pattern. It will greatly improved visibility and safety. Can't wait to hear the Q running!

All three you seen are long time employees, the Mike in this situation is a shop guy unlike the other Mike who mainly operates a rollback.

That rotator is truly a thing of beauty. As was the act of the driver of the crashed truck - he kept his head during a dicey situation. Well done, everyone.

I have found out that when running code 3, the air horn and the “Q” moves a lot of traffic versus an electric siren.

As I mentioned above, a Powercall has real authority, even against a Q.

@@rayives7758 depends on location! I have to use a ton of horns and Q vs. an electronic being enough for my area!

Really needs to be a StudderTone instead of a regular air horn...

Found your channel last night. I live in Cape, recognized your entire route to the accident, and have even done work for Capital Sand. Kinda surreal to see it all on a youtube video with 200k+ views.

Right I’ve been watching a couple of your videos and I’m very impressed. I’ve always given a lot of respect for our first responders are wrecker driver our state workers on the road because you guys have a dangerous job people don’t pay attention. My dad was a flagman on the Kansas roads and many of times he threw that paddle. In watching your videos you are courteous you’re kind and you’re very safe driver I now live in Texas and the wrecker drivers in my area are more dangerous than the other drivers trying to get to the job. Thanks for reminding me of home because all of the directors drivers back there were courteous kind and out to help people.
