Welcome to Code Geass, the most "anime" anime ever. By that I mean it's just got everything. Cute girls, giant robots, high-school, a cool super power, plans, all wrapped in a surprisingly interesting exploration of imperialism. Have fun y'all

When I watched this in High School, I tried so hard to be like Lelouch. I still put my hand to my face the same way he does, but I don't think anyone has picked up on the code geass association yet.

Lelouch is NOT an eleven... there're like 3 or 4 characters that call him a "britannian student" in the first 2 episodes alone so I don't think that's a spoiler. And he also says he's the son of a late consort (dead wife) of the britannian Emperor and he's also in line for the succession... so no his mother is not some cleaning lady and he's definitely not a bastard either.

I found it really funny that Josh had his moment in the discussion of giving Lelouche the benefit of the doubt and being like "Mehgan, we don't know enough about him!" then Mehgan gives Suzaku the same exact treatment and is like "Josh, we don't know enough about him!". I know you guys aren't picking sides like that but it almost would be funny if you get a bit going where Josh stans Lelouche and Mehgan stans Suzaku ride or die and you guys can lord over each other when W's and L's start to fly.

Code geass is one my favorite animes of all time. I hope you guys enjoy this anime as much as I did back in the day. This anime does throw out a lot stuff, if you pay attention you can figure somethings out with context clues and the anime will explain stuff (about the world and mysterious powers etc.. ) The anime is done by Sunrise the same people behind the Gundam show so you know the animations and mechs will look cool. All the characters were designed by 4 women (male and female characters) This anime does politics stuff very well like Attack on Titan, Gundam or jormungand or gunslinger girls.

*GREATEST ANIME EVER!* complete and satisfying ending and twists you'll never see coming

Ah, the series that has so many twists and turns you just enjoy the ride from start to finish

An interesting detail is that in the chess match, Lelouch has to move the king first because it’s blocking a piece he needs to move in order to win

Ok, only explaining this because it isn't made very clear in the show but a blink you miss it kinda way,, the Calendar of this series is slightly off from our own. Year 0 to them isn't year 0 to us, but 55 BC. Their year 0 starts when the Brits defeated Julius Ceaser invading Britain in 55 BC. When in our timeline that didn't quite happen. So this series actually takes place in 1963 (and the flash back in 1955), but due to timeline changes, with Napoleon winning and the Brits retreating to America, and the American Revolution failing previously... Britannia (formerly the US colonies) entered the industrial revolution sooner. So technology advanced the be near parallel to ours sooner. Yeah... Further Britianna then took over both the North American and South American continents, and retook the United Kingdom. So think American Manifest Destiny blended with the sun never setting on the British Empire because they controlled areas all over the world. Any place taken over is given an Area number. Other numbers include New Zealand (area 9), Saudi Arabia (Area 18), Indochina Pinnicula aka Vietnam and other countries south of China (Area 10), and Cambodia (Area 13). There's no definitive list beyond those places though. Anyways all this is covered very briefly in one of the classes in the show, but very briefly and it's kinda I the background. ------------ Minor spoilers here... . . . . . Now as to Lelouch's bloodline. He is FULL Britiannian and the biological son of the Emperor, and is by birth the 11th Prince of Britianna (and formerly the 17th heir). __________ A little heavier spoilers . . . . . .. . . He only has 1 full-blooded sibling though, as you guessed the girl in the wheelchair. His mother was the 5th wife the the Emperor, the Emperor is the 98th Emperor of Britianna (the first is from year 0). Also it's a case of having multiple wives simultaneously, nor a Henry the 8th situation. The other mothers aren't really a plot point though. All the other princes and princesses are his half-siblings (several are major characters, so I won't spoil), from other wives of his father. The dynamic of this very weird family is very character to character dependent, but it's safe to say him and his sister knew most of them very well. You will meet characters who are full Britiannian, half Britiannian, Japanese/Eleven, and from the rest of the world. As to the rest of the world. Britianna is kinda the Fascist/ Imperial Empire. The EU is kinda the worst embodiment of an ineffective democracy/confederacy, and the Chinese are kinda the worst embodiment of Communism blended with an Imperial Empire above the "equal" masses.

Lelouch English VA is Johnny Yong Bosch. He also does the English voice for Ichigo (Bleach) and Vash (Trigun).

This anime dominated my mind for decades. Be ready to get into this ride to go through a tunnel that will keep crushing your mind over and over

In monarchies, children are always considered heirs to the king or queen ruling at the time. The spouse is called the Royal Consort. Lelouch having the last name Britannia means he's one of the kings direct heirs.

So excited for this series! One of my all time faves and great timing since I just finished my re watch!

This anime has one of the best endings in anime. I just watched Code Geass 4 months ago, for the zillionth time. I think the second season is actually better than the first however, it's still incredible regardless. I hope you enjoy the show.

I just watched this anime last year, in the middle of 2023, and since then, it has become my number one anime. Even Lulu has become my top favorite character, so not just the anime.

The emperor has many wives (empress consort) Lelouch‘s mother, just being one of many that’s why in the middle of their name he has Vi indicating that branch from that mother He is the 11th prince, but 17th in line to the throne

I love codegeassso much beacuse at the end of the last episode it gives you sense of satisfaction that only a few shows manages to give. Like everything that is set up in the first episode gets in its conclusion and the how the postion of each characters introduced in the first episode stands at the end of the show

"What if Light Yagami was a disciplined anti-imperialist instead of doing capital punishment to petty criminals" basically xD I love Code Geass, it's one of the few shows that unabashedly strides into the "grey area" of justified revolutionary violence and sees where that takes things, and the struggle to maintain humanity during war. Having a protag named after the allegedly psy-op radical Trotskyist-turned-Conservative Lyndon LaRouche, who had just the most bonkers contradictory politics, is definitely an interesting choice.

My favourite part of the series is when Lelouch does nothing wrong

Just found your channel and enjoyed the video. One problem I found is your playlists on your channel are set up wrong. The first episode should always be at the top of the playlist otherwise you have to start at the bottom and press the "previous clip" button every time and people can forget and that can get annoying.

Fun fact: You were onto something when you say mecha anime tends to get inspired by other mecha anime... issue is, not every mecha anime follows the same sort of subgenre. Evangelion is a bit more of a SUPER MECHA or a show where 1 mecha tends to be the focus of the show (like Power ranger or whatnot) beside that mecha subgenre, we also have what's called REAL MECHA which derives from Gundam series.... in terms of more political show, the source tends to be from gundam. In terms of shows with aliens, teen drama, psychological issues with mechas, it is more Evangelion. Once you figure out which one is SUPER MECHA and which one are REAL MECHA, its becomes easier to tell the inspiration

"he could turn into a mech". Canonically, each of the magas takes place in an either an alternate reality/timeline, or in a different time period. In one or two of those, Lelouch does gain the ability to become a mech basically (while also fusing with C2).

This is the anime with the best ending among all manganimes I've ever seen or read. I'm not a fan of robots, and still, I fucking love this anime

As a sub truther i HAVE to advocate for the sub!

At last you guys are starting Code geass. It's a long due and better late than never...! Code geass is one of the few animes where dub is good. However, the VA in sub is way too good to ignore, especially Lelouch. Code geass is one of the most underrated anime... it deserves more popularity, respect and recognition. It is an almost S tier anime. Without spoiling anything, Code geass is a top tier anime with great Characters, having deepthematic, philosophical, ideological nuance to its characters, great take on imperialism and its consequences, political, revolutionary tale with Death note like mind games, supercool giantmecha battles, continuously moving, plot with twists and turns, interesting character conflicts, best poses, best one liners, dramatic performative charming intelligent protagonist and most of all it has one of the best ending. One thing I'll say... Lelouch >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Light. Light is narcissistic, self agrandizing, manipulative guy having a god complex, without any remorse or moral compass or any self awareness of his descent into the madness, and fully convincing himself that he is always right. On the other hand, Lelouch has a moral compass, he deeply cares for Nunally. his motivation to bring down Britannia and make it pay for the injustice, his self awareness of his own flaws, actions,and their consequences and his acceptance of him being the bad the the world needs to make it good for his sister Nunally... And is ready to go to any lengths for this. Lelouch is the 'negative character progression' done right, where the character themselves are selfaware, accepting the consequences, but proceed ahead in the same direction just to achieve their goals.. his own moral compass oscillating between Bringing down oppression and revenge against the Britannia.. (which is a very interesting take on how to approach a character) Light on the other hand is just hollow self absorbed, messiah complex, who doesn't care about anyone and is purely devoid of any humanity... I liked light for his intelligence, but after Misora Naomi, I started to hate him , and Death note became a story of the downfall of a well established genius evil dude... Where I only enjoyed the mind games, twists, but never rooted for Light. The first time I watched Code geass and I got to know Lelouch, this charcter inspite of all his flaws is far better, well written, superior, complex, interesting, take on the negative character progression... Which even makes us root for Lelouch many times and even get conflicted for rooting for him , as he is a complex character and his actions are difficult to understand, and always are way too bizzare for us to comprehend/rationalize... As he himself is trying to understand himself in the process and yet doubling down on his mission even though he had to dirty his hands. The "means to the end" trope in code geass at least is justified till some extent at least by Lelouch's self-awareness of what he is doing is wrong, but it's like a necessary evil. Unlike in Light's case, he is just delusional about overestimating his own position as God and he can do anything just because what he does is justice irrespective of how dispecable it is. That's what I really liked about Lelouch. He is genuine in his actions, thoughts, and is emotionally intelligent to understand the nuances of the concept of "necessary evil" without falling into the trap of messiah complex and no-remorse. And as a cherry on top of it all... Lelouch is deep, emotionally and socially intelligent character who has great philosophies of his own on different aspects... Which by themselves are very interesting and thought provoking, to say the least. And of course the dramatics of Lelouch his skills of performance/putting on a show provide entertainment, excitement just to see Lelouch as character do his thing.

Volume One Plus is back 🔥 This one has a good mix of elements I think you'll both enjoy. I'm ready for the drama, twists and of course the fired up Josh rants 💪

Fun fact 1: This show wasn't originally intended to be a mecha show. The producers made the writers put mecha in it because they were really popular at the time. Fun fact 2: The word "Geass" came from the Irish/Gaelic word "geas", which is a spell or curse that forces someone to do some specific task. When you put that single-syllable word through the rather idiosyncratic Japanese writing system, it comes out as a two-syllable word.

1 thing when you look at the calender it doesn´t say after christ - they use a diffrent calender - ther callender is 55 years ahead this anime play in the 50s and 60s

Code Geass is one of roughly a dozen or so anime series that I have watched in both Japanese and English dub and enjoyed both versions equally. There are some anime that I have felt had poor English redubbing compared to the original Japanese version.

still cant believe you watched evangelion and this in dub, but not gurren lagann....out of all 3, gurren wouldve been the best in dub (this is good too tho, at least you are watching this in dub i guess) damn....the dubbed speeches and voice acting mixed with the music in gurren is on a different level tho

Alright Volume One, listen up. The reason so many people suggested the dub is because this and Death Note have, what they say, "the best" english dub performance... which in global, worldwide standards is just 'Above Average' quality. I mean, it's good.. but certainly not better than the the original Japanese audio of the Sub, no dub is better than sub... the best I can think of is Reigen Arataka's english voice (from Mob Psycho 100), it's the only one that is arguably better than the japanaese voice in all areas.. but then again, one single voice cannot carry the whole performance of the Dub. Give Sub a try and see for yourselves 😉

I love this series. But I hate Johny Yong Bosh as Lelouch (I like him in a lot of things, but he played this role incorrectly in a lot of instances) so I avoid this version, but I hope you guys love it none the less!

well i was gonna try this series and this new channel to me up until you said your doing dub and then it was time to drop both immediately

The dub is great. Its just as good as the Cowboy Bebop dub.

Lelouch is a much more likeable character than Light Ayagami in my opinion.

Oh this is one of my favorite shows from way back its so good. The dub is good as heck its one of the few dubs that just is spot on. Black lagoon and Nadiya and the secret of blue water are also great dubs.

I do think some voices are better in the Japanese version, but there are a lot of good VA's in the ENG dub and it kind of has some headcannon-y lore reasons as to why it'd be spoken in English. I hope you both enjoy this wild ride!
