His point seems dumb on a first glance, but he has a point... I'll try with real world example: what if Russia conquered Ukraine in a first days? How many casualties it would have been? Nobody knows, but I think it's obviously less than it is now. I am not trying to say that Russia did something good (or Britannia in the show), but to start a war or to just give up... it's a difficult choice sometimes... In terms of how many death it will be in each case. So Suzaku believs that it is possible to change the system within so it would be less casualities if you compare to a Lelouch's decision of trying to start a war basically. Sorry, my English is bad, but I hope you undersrand my point.

Suzaku and Lelouch thus far seem to be very extreme sides of a coin, Lelouch with the outride violent terrorist ridden rebellion, and Suzaku with the full pacifistic, "change from within" MLK style revolution. So in that sense, I get having a strong reaction to Suzaku's extreme perspective, but I don't think it's much worse than your black and white way of putting it either. In any world with any semblance of realism (aka without Geass powers or anime smart guy 5D chess), Suzaku's method would be infinitely more effective and sensible (though of course the best would be somewhere in between). It's just hard to distinguish a realistic path to change with evil people bad, must kill the evil people.

I love how the core of this series is basically a debate between Lelouch and Suzaku's ideologies. Both clearly know and understand that the current system is the problem and must be changed but they believe it should be done in different ways. Lelouch believes that the system is so broken at this point that is pretty much unsalavagbale so it has to be toppled and then rebuilt from the ground up. Suzaku believes that change the system has the resources and abilitity to change from within. Both however fully know and recongize that either option can only occur with the support of the masses and that it has to revolve around a symbol.

I have seen reactors to Code Geass that had degrees in psychology, history, literature etc. and can do deep dives in how they break down their analysis. This pair is very smart and they do a good job but let's not get carried away by calling anyone's reaction the smartest. In fact what's fun is getting the unique reactions of people with unique backgrounds. For example a musician can comment in depth about the instruments or music they use in the background or an aerospace engineer can comment in depth about the science behind the mechs etc.

Yeah Lelouch is a full Britannian, and is royalty. He was in Japan at the time the war broke out. Thing is, Suzaku's ideals only work if a person in power agrees with him, but Britannians are taught to discriminate against numbers. It's a nation that is based on supremacist ideas, also there's other things that make it harder to peacefully change the nation. But I won't get into spoilers, there's some things that happen later that make some things much clearer.

"Thing is, Suzaku's ideals only work if a person in power agrees with him" Yes and as we see, people in power do start recognising him. Just in the first season itself.
@darkrite9000
@darkrite9000 6 месяцев назад
@@govind.m86 When I say people in power I mean those who actually get a say in how elevens are treated. The kinda people who can actually get you out of being a scapegoat for an assassination to push someone's agenda. Lloyd doesn't actually count when I say people in power. As despite his fairly high position and nobility, he can't stop Suzaku's court marshal/execution. You'd need someone that's actually a royal to do that, or have the authority almost on par with a royal. And since I've re-watched Code Geass a lot of times. There's nothing in the plot that isn't ingrained into my head. So when I say Suzaku's ideals won't work because of people in power, I mean it. Ideals are nothing when compared to the power of Geass and the plans of those up above. And even with the support of some individuals in certain positions of power, Suzaku's ideals are not ever achievable. It takes Lelouch to change the world, and I will merely leave it at that for now.

Just a few things for some context: -Britannia is an absolute monarchy so you have the Nobility and the normal britannian citizens who obey them. -Numbers (like the japanese and many others people who were conquered) are the slaves basically. -Britanna controls a good 1/3 of the world (all of america, parts of africa and Japan) -The rest of the world is also quite different.
@weedshrek
@weedshrek 7 месяцев назад
Suzaku is an idealist, Lelouch is a pragmatist. Lelouch (imo rightfully) understands that the only thing an empire understands is force, whereas Suzaku thinks he can win hearts and minds by being one of the "good ones". As Suzaku said, Zero believes the ends justify the means, and Suzaku feels the means must align with the ends. One of the things I'll really praise Geass for is being one of the few shows that recognizes (especially for the time it came out) that rebellions are rarely coherent, but rather a variety of factions that want independence for different ideological reasons and with varying means of action. I love the inclusion of the JLF vs Ohgi's rag-tag team, vs what Lelouch wants, vs what Suzaku thinks.
@darknessknows1235
@darknessknows1235 7 месяцев назад
tbf that's not entirely correct. It gets into spoilers, but Lelouch clearly takes into consideration winning over other's hearts. The difference is only their means
@weedshrek
@weedshrek 7 месяцев назад
@@darknessknows1235 I didn't mean that Lelouch doesn't understand he needs broad public support, he obviously does, that's the whole point of how he portrays oghi's rebels to the public when he officially publicizes them as his group. I'm saying specifically Suzaku thinks he can win people over by being a good honorary britanian and challenging britanian public perception of the japanese through his actions within the military.

Lelouch and Light are nothing alike, at least in terms of personality. Light was always unhinged and evil, Near said that a normal person would stop using the death note the second a person died for real, while Light showed who he really was and started murdering people. Lelouch is more human than Light, he regrets his actions, he falters, he doubts about what he's doing and it its the right thing to do.

Probably the most important thing to keep in mind with Suzaku is that he doesn't want innocent people to suffer. To change the world for the better at the expense of even one innocent person is too high a cost. Like he said before leaving, if he didn't turn himself in, the 11's would suffer the consequences of his actions. Is he naive? Yes. But you also haven't learned everything about him, yet.

OH GOD YES!!! "He is like lawful good" That's EXACTLY IT! Maybe leaning toward lawful neutral. But honestly it's the first time I hear someone refer to Suzaku as a D&D alignment, but it's like exactly that. Suzaku is basically a paladin, and the dilemma between good and law IS what makes the character interesting. It doesn't make it less or dumb. There are actual people that do value honor, law etc...

A lot of people get confused when it comes to Suzaku Kururugi motivations. The whole point is he wants to be an example to Britania and other nations of working together instead of constantly fighting. In his mind if he can prove that Japanese people are capable of working with Britania they can have a better life. He wants to stop the fighting by being an example of cooperation. Its a flawed mindset to be sure. But is it anymore flawed than Lelouche's mindset of "Results at all cost"? A big part of the show I think is the question of what is the right way and the wrong way to inflict change. Do you do it from within via your deeds and example or do you do it by force with violence and rebellion? Neither are wrong and at the same time nether are right. If you do it via cooperation and deeds you need to hope that those at the top want to change and notice you. If you do it via violence and rebellion even if you win someone else ends up at the bottom. Say they take Japan back. What happens to all the Britannians living there? Maybe they become the oppressed and start their own rebellion. Thus the violence never stops. You need a bit of both styles to inflict lasting change You need people like Suzaku to help rally the populace to want change and you need people like Lelouche to inflict that change.

Code Geass likes to add minute details that you may not catch the first time through. Or you may not see it until the 2nd time or even the 5th time watching it. For example in Episode 3 Lelouch successfully geassed the wasp to get the other girls away from Kallen. If you pay attention you see them zoom into the wasp's head for a second and you can see the red glow around the eyes fade away.

If anything, this series proves that revolution and change can only happen if someone in power, from the top, decide to change it. You need the help of the system to change it or destroy it. I feel like Suzaku's view is the most realistic because he knows it won't happen in one go, time if the key factor. Sure, it sucks that people will still suffer before it gets better. But war will cause serious hurt as well, if not more, because it's easier for a terrible system to raise when you can justify it by necessity.

Wars produce change quickly but the cost is high and you may just lose. Trying to change stuff from within has fewer short term casualties but takes a long ass time and some things end up permanently skewed. During the course of workers and civil rights movements many fights were lost but as a result of those loses public opinion gradually shifted until they couldn't be stopped. Honestly if Suzaku was more pragmatic in his thinking (like how he mentioned they'd crack down on elevens if he didn't return) he'd have a lot more support. You've no doubt noticed how frustrating he can be sometimes. But yeah this show is great. So many little details makes subsequent watch throughs enjoyable.

Don't let people tell you which characters to like. The empire is also lying to Suzaku. Like the massacre in the first 2 episodes was the terrorist faults. So he is either willfully ignorant or is ignorant about it. With the Nobleman Jeremiah who let Suzaku go. It looks like you missed the part that Lelouch said "You wouldn't want them to learn of Orange, do you?" Then gave him the order to let him go. Thought you should know cause Orange gets mentioned a few times and that scene is why
@TurntBucket
@TurntBucket 7 месяцев назад
There have been many peaceful revolutions. If you do not have an adequate military on your side then a peaceful approach is probably the most realistic. "Resisting" to only get your ppl killed and even more oppressed is not a good strategy. If you have no realistic shot at a violent overthrow then you are just shooting yourself in the foot. Lelouche was stagnant doing nothing for so long for a reason. He knew it was pointless. But now he has the power and that was the tipping point for him. His friend doesnt know Lelouche is an MC of an anime. He thinks its just some terrorist giving him bad advice. He would rather self sacrifice for relations to normalize and eventually the Japanese can be accepted. Britannia, tho is a monarchy, still has to respond to popular public sentiment. If the average Britanian hates what is happening to the Japanese then it makes it much harder for monarchy to allow it to continue.

43:50 I'm gonna go ahead and disagree here. Yes Suzaku's plan is an alternative, sure. The time frame however is SUPER unrealistic. You have people suffering in their own country and you just want them to sit back be patient as you spend X amount of years kissing a foreign governments cheeks in the hopes of them one day giving your people a say at the table. It could be argued that the only reason Suzaku's efforts were noticed at all by Britania thus far is because Lelouche exists otherwise he would've just been another nobody, cog in the system, hoping and failing to make change as an honorary britanian. Also from a real world stand point when you rise up against governments and try to point out corruption you're also unfortunately fighting against the indoctrinated citizens. Which once again backs the facts that although suzaku has a plan. No one is gonna wait on that nonsense when they can fight back.
