Thats precisely the goal with both of them. I tried to recreate the high end boots in a way which didnt compromise much, but also remains affordable. Even the "high end" leathers in the Thursday models will be less than a Heritage Red Wing boot.

Wise words. My kids are adults now, but I would give anything to go back and not work so much. It’s hard to explain that to the younger generations. Work to live not live to work.

Great take on work culture Carl. Im mid twenties and even in a retail enviroment I feel bad for asking for the occasional Saturday off to spend the day with friends or attend a family event. I respect the blue collar hustle of being providers, but the peacocking culture of overtime and insane work weeks for sure has influenced newcomers to earn their place and "respect." At 25, this is the first year since he was 16 my boyfriend has used all his vacation days. I respect his work ethic so much but its great to see him take the time to go abroad with his family and really get something from years of work and overtime.

Thank you for sharing this. I always wonder what's behind that pang of guilt we feel when asking for time off. It's typically the fact that we're so indoctrinated with hustle culture and working hard that taking time for ourselves is almost shameful. I also think this is entirely false, and only serves to benefit the employer. For many, many years I never took my full time off. It was foolish of me.

It is actually EXTREMELY hard to kill your ego, put down your successes and snuff your own understanding in order to even attempt to understand what someone else is saying, why someone else is saying it and how they came to the conclusion that they did. This also includes the people saying things to you. Some people have their personal successes and biases cloud their judgement (it worked for me 30 years ago, why wouldn't it work for you etc). The truth will always be that you will be the one who knows yourself the best, always bet on yourself but keep in mind that uncountable people before you may have walked the path you are walking now, and amongst all the chatter, nonsense and non-sequiturs are nuggets of wisdom.

I’m one of those who did give up time with family and health for money and family. A product of parents who grew up during the depression and WW2. So that’s what you were supposed to do. Now I’m alone. With no one. Trust me it wasn’t worth it. To young people, work is not your life. Your family is much more important. Always a fan Carl thanks for what you do and say.

I became a sole trader, decorator, 30 years ago and haven’t looked back. I soon learned that taking time for yourself and your family is the most important thing in life. I may not earn as much as others but I really don’t care. Sometimes life throws a curve ball and you’ll be glad for the love and resilience of the family you have.

Great rundown, but pardon me if I skimp on the shorts and save my sheckles for boots and flannel. Hard to beat Patagonia Baggies anyway. Hey, I’m glad you landed on Wrangler! Flies under the radar these days, but legit great bang for the buck. A lot like Carhartt. Next time you do a jeans roundup, check out the legendary 13MWZ. No better value in denim, except possibly the Wrangler Rustler that Walmart sells.

The time thing was one of the driving factors for deciding to get out of the Navy. Listening to the squadron ombudsman describe how many times her husband deployed and calculated it out to be about 10 years total when including work ups and dets, over a 20 year span, 10 years is a lot of time to miss.

It really is. I spend 10 hours per week in the car on my commute. I try to use that time listening to books or on calls, but its a lot of time in the car.

The Hoka Nicole McLaughlin shoe is pretty cool and honestly isn't really wild compared to the look of Hoka footwear in general. Nicole has done some other wild sneaker collaborations and she has done some really cool repurposing of old Patagonia jackets and stuff to add utility and interesting design to sneakers and other stuff. Really cool stuff. I have some Vans that she collaborated on and I love them. I may be in the minority of the crossover of your audience and sneaker guys though. If you're looking for good grey and/or black sneakers, definitely look into New Balance. Their Made In USA line is notoriously grey and kinda legendary for sneaker quality and comfort standards for decades. They have a lot of wild colorways and models too, but a 993 or 990 (v2 through v6) might be right up your alley, Carl!

Oil industry my normal month is 32 days straight 12hrs a day 4 days off and it all starts again. :-( summer goes fast when its only 3 weeks long. Ps work is normally 500 miles from home.... Love the show

Grew up with an offshore directional driller dad. He was 14 days on, 14 days off but due to the niche he was in, he was pretty much often stuck on the rig until a replacement was made available. Other times, he got shafted and was sent to another rig because the no one else was available to take the spot. Just one rig after another. He missed watching me growing up but thankfully that changed for my sister 12 years younger than me. But he remains extremely awkward in interacting with his kids.

@@chrislarsen1033 There was truly no happy ending. Of the original batch of DD that started with my dad in the 80s, I believe more than half of them (including my dad) developed parkinsons. It may become a super majority if I bother keeping count for a few more years.

I live in Arizona so despite being 59 I wear shorts every day for 8-9 months per year and I wouldn't pay 1620 money for these "fashion" shorts. All American, Diamond gusset and LC King make durable, good looking and far less expensive shorts here in the U.S.so that's where my money ends up. The only excuse for those yellow shoes id being a crossing guard unless they're safety shoes;D
