Had Devin Townsend for coffee, or well he interviewed me basically... What a man, I think we all should be very lucky to have this human being in our lives.
"I feel like life is so goddamn difficult that we should be supporting people. Like, dude, if you like dressing up in a fur costume and that makes you happy, here's a brush." - Devin Townsend, 2020
One of the reasons I love Devin so much, he's really developed a pretty beautiful outlook on life, and it's been an interesting journey to see him arrive where he is now as a person!
@@graysonwilson-cacciapalle7989 So fucking true man. It's why I'm such a devoted Devin Townsend fan. Other than his music being absolutely PHENOMENAL, he's just a beautiful and warm hearted human being who just loves making music and being happy. There are so many reasons to admire this man. He's the greatest musician this world has right now. His vocal abilities are on par with the best in the world. He's kind. Generous. Funny. Passionate. Hard working. Dudes my idol. 🤟🏻😁 #DevinIsGawd
The personality of a guy who's really had to work for his success and doesn't take anything for granted. For such an immensely talented guy he is very grounded. Also conforming to the stereotype that Canadians are absurdly nice people.
I interviewed him before a show back in 2013 and he played beautiful ambient guitar the entire time while talking to me. It actually calmed my nerves 😅
*"I just want things to be awesome. So I just spend shitloads of money. I'm in debt every project I do. Every tour I do. Everything."* This is just one of several reasons I admire this man. To say nothing about this man's seemingly infinite talent. His kind hearted and generous nature. His uplifting and positive message. His humor. The fact he doesn't take himself too seriously and just wants to have fun with his fans. He could easily be a cocky, arrogant bastard and be justified in it based on his accomplishments alone. But he isn't. He's the most humble man I've ever seen. A man unaware of just how talented he really is and how much what he does means to all of us as fans who follow his career with avid anticipation. The fact he's willing to invest so much of his own money into his work speaks volumes. And it's why I will forever support this man. We love you, Devy. I could listen to Devin talk for days. Such a fascinating mind. 🤟🏻😁 #DevinIsGawd
I saw a video that he describes how he met Chad from Nickelback and how Chad taugh him how their writing and producing at Nickelback works and how they basicly "prints money". But the commentary Devy did about it was amazing for me. He said that even though it would be amazing to make shit loads of money it wouldn't be true to him. It would be meaningless, although he said that he trully admires Chad for what they accomplished with Nickelback. And that was one of the most amazing things for me about Devin Townsend.
I agree except for one thing. He is aware of how good he is and I think he chooses to be more humble because he sees how crazy and arrogant people can become. He thinks to himself....nah I am too good for that crap. All it does is slow things down and mess things up anyways, which he knows.. That being well known, alot of people take it way over the edge anyway. Alot of confidence is what you need. Not arrogance.
It’s impressive just how much Devin has changed physically over the past ten years. Dude looks like he’s put on some mass and is taking care of himself. Don’t get me wrong, I love Strapping Young Lad, but not at the expense of his health.
SYL was horrible for Devin's mental health. As much as I miss SYL I'm glad Devin is in a better place mentally because the devin Townsend project is incredible.
@@SnEaKeRSkEr I overall miss the old Devy but clearly he's in a much better place now and that matters the most. But I do miss SYL and i'll never get over that. But hey, he'll be playing some SYL stuff this year
Geffrey van der Bos he is one of the few musicians who isn’t treating the interview like marketing. He’s very honest and more importantly, his fans like that honesty. Think of his contemporaries - there is some Really Really dark stuff under the hood and they are expected to be superheroes. Interestingly enough, my favourite Devin stuff was done 25 years ago. I want super Dev.
Love how Ola just mentions something and Devin then goes off for 10 minutes on a string of topics and then always returs to "what were we talking about again?"
Two of my favorite people in the music world right here interviewing each other. Such a legendary talk between two of the smartest most down to earth people. Hellyeah getchapull.
@@OlaEnglund I think a lot of people do... It's just amazing how much hard drive Devy's brain has... I think his subconscious is in the limitless cloud
That interaction with Devin did not feel it was an hour long! And Ola being an awesome host allowed Devin to take the wheel of the conversation allowing Devin's mind to roam free making this one of the best interviews I have seen so far.
This video is not just an interview. It is two human beings talking about life, existence, and music. Wholesome. Educational. Inspiring. Humbling. Thank you Ola for doing this with Devin. You both are breathtaking.
There's a great "humaness" about Devin. What makes him stand out is beyond how very talented he is,he doesn't come off as full of himself and very normal with flaws like everyone else. His singing is phenomenal as is his guitar playing. I have always been a huge fan of Ocean Machine and so many years later Empath strikes a similar chord. Having met him a few times he is the most down to earth really nice guy as was DTP.
I hardly ever make a comment on RU-vid but this was by far the best music interview that I've ever seen and I watched a lot of them. it was amazing to see an interview with Devin be so genuine and give up some really cool information about his Psyche on when he creates music. it gives me a whole new appreciation for him as a musician.. Devens 1000% correct you do the community a great service. continued success sir !!
Watching this again. I watched this when it originally aired and it has had such a ripple effect in my psyche. Devin is so layered; he is like slowly pealing an onion. Thank you Ola for making great content and thank you Devin for making music to fit every possible emotion we can experience. You write the best soundtracks for most of my days!!
I met Dev once and he was so warm, friendly, humble and nice. I told him I'd been along for the ride since 1993 and he gave me a hug. They say you should never meet your heroes, but I'm so glad I met this one
I clicked as soon as I saw devy's name on the title. Also, you should add devin to your future work, collab with other artists and call it 'Ola and Friends' lol
Thee Obeast One just a heads up with having the same name as him we don’t like devy dev is alright but we just have an awful name anyways but my mom or wife don’t call me devy just dev.
Fantastic Ola! It's such an incredibly refreshing thing to see someone who is so authentic and self-aware in a world where people in his position are heavily incentivized to be anything but. Thanks for bringing this to us!
All you need to know on how Devin treats his fans: I visited LOTS of concerts, but Devin so far is the only who shaked my hand from the stage after show. Best attitude ever.
True! I saw him a few years ago & after the concert, he stayed & shook all the hands of everyone who approached him. WHO DOES THAT?! F-ing cool guy! Love him.
I've seen him now a dozen or so times and after every show I shake his hand and thank him for the experience and he always thanks me back. He's the most down to earth performer.
This is by far my favorite interview that you have ever done. I love how off-the-cuff it was with the going back and forth. Devin is so smart. He has a way of explaining and dissecting things that I can listen to all day.
My god. The way Devin feels about body irritations and that brief moment of relief when you realise you don't feel your body is exactly me. I thought I was the only one
the least surprising thing I learned from this video is that devin townsend loves all genres of music and yet is highly discerning about quality. i think this is true of every musician i like or respect.
Wow, I don't listen much to Devin's music, but the man himself is so fascinating. Great interview Ola! You asked just enough to get Devin to go off on his tangents and that was very entertaining. You guys are both awesome assets to the guitar community!
I don't have any market data, but I think having tons of models with Evertune really helped Solar sell guitars. When I was shopping for an Evertune guitar I really only had 3 choices: 1) a noname cheapo guitar with questionable quality on amazon 2) one Epiphone model only in LP shape 3) any of the Solar ones with Evertune. So here I am, almost 2 years later, with my Solar A1.6ETC. I definitely made the right choice.
I was sooo curious about this episode that I had to watch it before commenting. I agree on each single word that came out of Devin and him, Guthrie and Steve Vai are the 3 people on this planet earth who I could talk to forever because their way of talking is beautifully philosophical and simply honest! Loved this episode! (... oh yeah and add Ola to the “conversations-could-go-on-forever” people list of course...) Devin rules!!!
Devin is so well spoken! Hilariously dark sense of humour too!! Also, what a cool guy to ask to try your guitar! I honestly had no idea that Louise made the Solar logo. Such a badass design!!
I remember he mentioned some time ago that he had done a cover of a Vengaboys song but he couldn't get the rights to show it. Needless to say, to this day I'm really curious about what that sounds like!!
There aren’t many people who I idolize but Dev and SYL were one of my segues into more extreme metal. I owe alot to this guy as a Canadian and a musician. Glad that I’ve had the opportunity in the past to personally thank him for making music.
7:02 Spot on! I've been waiting for someone to mention Stravinsky's influence on John Williams! ("Starwars", "Superman", etc.) In fact, the first time I heard Stravinsky's Firebird Suite, as a young teenager, my first thought was: _"Aaaah! That sounds like the soundtrack to a _*_great_*_ movie!"_
Okay, I watched it! A whole hour o' Devin rambling about things and losing track of what the original topic was. This truly is a gift! Also, I remember when Lucky Animals came out and a bunch of people sent in little videos of them dancing in their fursuits- seeing him here a few years later saying 'here's a brush!' is so validating lol. Devin is one of my favourite humans for sure
I really don't know why it's taken me 6 months to come across this Coffee with Ola episode, but I just could not stop watching. I was disappointed that it ended so early. 2 very humble people having a very genuine, down to earth conversation where each and every person who watches will take something away to make them just that little bit better.
Devy knows the struggle is real and does his best to keep it together so he can continue doing what he loves, making awesome music and performing it for our lucky ears, minds and souls.
Devin Townsend is an actual musical mastermind. From being Steve Vai's singer to Strapping Young Lad to his Empath album. He's one of my favorite all time musicians. Thank you so much for this interview! Seeing him next weekend in Orlando.
Thank you dear Ola for interwiewing Devin T,..to describe this man, is nothing i can put in words,..he is simply awesome, his aura is soooo healing and his music heals and make people so happy, he is so much love. Thank you Devin and also much respect to you Ola,...
this dude would be intimidating to interview. An intelligent complex guy, beautifully creative, but you'd have to choose your words well if you wanted to compliment him. Love that Willie Nelson joke though!
I first heard of Devin when he was with Steve Via. Saw them in a club on Orlando FL. He came out wearing adult onesie pajamas with multicolored polka dots. Like Wonder bread. He was awesome. Of course Steve was also. Great musician with a statospheric I.Q. Thanks Ola. Could you please get Obituary on. My friend Kenny is the lead guitarist.
I still remember when I randomly saw the video for "Detox" late at night on MTV, I was like "WTF is this??? is that Gene Hoglan??" , i was converted right there
Wish I could sit with you and Dev. I would absolutely love to see what I could learn from you both as both a musician and just a human. Thanks for this one Ola!
That was fucking awesome!!! I finished work, grabbed the iPad and a beer watching this I literally felt like I was there in the room.. epic chat with 2 fucking legends!! 🤘🏼🇦🇺🤘🏼
Can never get tired of listening to Devin talk about whatever pops into his mind. It's like being at home with someone whose company you enjoy and can relax with. I really wish this interview was 3 hours long, it was definitely the best. And how can anybody top those words at the end towards your effort. I think the opinion thing, people voicing stuff out sometimes very unnecessarily or even hurtfully, is something about the feeling of being important. Like "my voice has to be heard, I'm not just nobody, somebody has to care about what I think" because it's a god damn ruthless and lonely world we live in. You don't necessarily have chance to have too many people in your life who truly care about you and your thoughts. Some have almost plenty, some have a few and some don't have anybody. But to have somebody care about what you say is special, to get reactions to your thoughts. Like artists tend to say "negative feedback is better than no feedback at all", at least you made some impact instead of everybody ignoring you. I'm sure that's also partially why people give unwarranted negative criticism or just plain insult others. What can you say to someone who says "hey you're cool, I like what you're doing/how you look"? If someone reacts to that, the most you get out is often "thanks :)". But piss people off or have extreme opinions? You have people to talk with for days.
