@@sammyloehnis3373 ??? so they rewrite their music for every show? You don't 'tune' a guitar to a venue. You tune it to a tuning, and in his case it's C or B depending on the song. Maybe they approximate the best speaker placement and volume for a venue, but that's the best any band can do. It's all a giant variable depending on the size and layout of the venue.
I worked at a Vancouver Studio Hipposonic for many years and had the pleasure of working with and learning from Devin on 3 or 4 projects (15 years ago). The best kind of human being. You want to be in a room with this guy. Plus, he has some the best rock tales of all time. Pee your pants funny. So stoked he is on TPS.
Yeah from what I've seen he just 'does his thing' like any of us would do. The difference is how he views himself compared to the huge rock and metal egos we've seen in the past. As a person, he is as refreshing as his music, and also carries the tongue in cheek sense of humour displayed in his music. He's awesome all the way around.
I envy you because you now have the chance to travel with him through his musical journey it will all be a new and an amazing experience for you! By the end you will realise why his fans love him so much. And if you ever get the chance to see him live that love rings true at his concerts, it feels more like a gathering of friends than a concert.
Devin Townsend can do it All. Over 30 albums of all different shapes and Colors . Vocal Range is off the Charts. Prince Zappa Miles & Devin is right there. Ambient to Death Medal but his love for Ambient He works his Muse on Ocean Machine is so cool. Devin is so Underrated its Criminal .
apparently he was asked to do some music for a video game, but the developers were too specific about what they wanted from him and he didn't want to force it so he ended up backing out.
I've had one for nearly a year and it's replaced a big chunk of my pedalboard! I used to have a whole pedalboard for clean, ambient tones, now I've got an ocean machine and a boss harmonist! It's such a great pedal when you put the time into it :)
Devin can honestly say that he owns a guitar tuned to blue. He just became more awesome. Cool pants too. Not a single eff was given and he made sounds none of us can.
Next on your list should be Strapping Young Lad(City). You might need to force yourself to listen to it because chaotic is an understatement! It's none the less a metal masterpiece. If you feel like coming down a bit after that, there's Casualties of Cool. You'll be very very puzzled all of that came out of the same guy. And you'll be smiling:)
Same here, I do best with restricted options, but this dude's on a different level, just fucking dials it in. Really good video, knew of Devin Townsend in a vague metal sense, didn't know about the rest, clicked from mild curiosity, didn't expect to completely enjoy the whole thing!

To see professionals in the tech gear manufacturing sector sit in awe of what Devvy can do with their equipment is just unreal. The man is a musical genius. I have absolutely NO CLUE about 99.9% of the theory and tech stuff he was talking about, but hey....I sat through the entire 45 mins video spellbound watching that other dude's facial expressions and the unsaid words "we are not worthy" rattling in his head.
Listening to this interview I now see why Devy and Vai got along well enough to make music together. They both seem like not just titanic musicians but also lovely human beings.
Been a fan of Devin's for the last 15 or so years. I have a massive amount of respect for the man. He's certainly one of the most important musical artist of my lifetime. And he's a nice chap to boot. I wish him nothing but the best.
Guys is it just me? haha there are times when you pick up your favorite guitar and you wish you stayed in bed, then you pull it out one day with no expectations ans the guitar does whats in your head and more, and you actually feel impressed with yourself? It happens to me a lot and just wondered if it happens to the pros too
I've found that before every practice session, if I just kinda strum maybe the same note, or little diddly for like 10 minutes I get in a better mood or state of mind to practice and the guitar does what I want for hours.
Great video! Man, can he play. I never knew he was this good at guitar. I know exactly what he means when he says you can get lost in it when you play ambient stuff like this with several delays/reverbs/etc. stacked (series and parallel)... I'm about as mediocre as it gets when it comes to playing guitar, but it's so much about feel when you're working with feedback and nested delays. So much fun.
I once had a dream that Voldemort and Louis CK were jamming out testing different guitar pedals. Then I realized it was just me remembering this video.
I don't know that I've ever heard a note of Mr. Townsend before today. I got a little choked up around 14:45 though. I love the love on this show. "I believe you in your music" might be the highest praise one can give a musician - Dan thank you. Looking forward to discovering DT.
I would start with Ocean Machine, it's probably my favourite album of all time. I can't think of another artist even close to Devin's creativity and talent. Please let me know how you get on
You should check out his Royal. Albert Hall show. It was the first thing I ever saw from him. It was a very big musical moment for me that I'll never forget.
Yeah he's the real deal, huge fan. Like Ocean Machine, Ziltoid is a classic album that shows his more metal side, most of his albums are really great. Deconstruction's maybe his most underrated, but it's brilliant. One song that still makes me tear up is Deep Peace, during the guitar solo, definitely reccomend that one
Dev has such an eclectic library, I found it really intimidating figuring out where to start. I definitely recommend a video called "Devin Townsend ultimate reviewtrospecive" or something like that to get a feel of where and how to dive in. For what it's worth, I started with "Ki" which I still really love.
I thought when Andy came on the show that it was an un-toppable episode, but here you've gone and done it. I am of an age where I should have been into Devin Townsend since the beginning of his career, but I've only come to know his stuff in the past couple of years. I'm so happy I have, too, because it's enriching, fun, funny, and touching music.
I don't know Devin's music, though with fleeting moments of it, I do get drawn into his amazing sense of feeling. abstract ambience and solid rock riffs. so creative and to me, in the realm of a frank zappa type of musician. I look forward to listening to more
Three things. One, he's hilarious. That bit about selling haunted country to your label after something more commercial was killing me. Two, nobody but Devin should demonstrate the Ocean Machine. All the other demos I've seen have made it look like a lesser H90 with one more delay. That bit with bouncing a sample back and forth with the feedback maxed is brilliant. The Ocean Machine needs a button or maybe to be set up so you can double tap the individual delay bypass button to clear the squeally sound out and move on if you don't like what it currently has in it. Thirdly, I think he could do most of what the Particle and Rainbow Machine do with a Red Panda Raster v2. The Raster's versions of the Rainbow Machine sounds are better, imo. Plus you have a lot more options for working with those types of sounds including all kinds of stereo craziness that the Rainbow Machine just doesn't offer. Maybe he's in love with the granular sounds in the Particle and the Raster only sort of simulates that kind of stuff. Finally, this video is four years old so I'm sure this comment has been a huge waste of my precious hot air. rofl. That setup with being able to ping pong stuff into Ableton and then back into the board is an awesome way of working. If you had that board, Axe Effects and Ableton with an APC 40 controller the options for producing music and performing it live are really staggering. 26 albums. Yow. You setting that board up for him is brilliant.

Ive never been to one of his shows but it's a huge priority for me as soon as he comes to my area. Can anyone fill me in on his take of 'live show volume vs sound quality'? I can only imagine that it's more towards a balance of awe-inspiring power and quality. I like to be able to hear all the details.
Devin is one of my musical heros. The man seems to be able to write music to suit any mood. If you can't find an album of Devin's that you like, there's something wrong with you.
Any possibility of getting to talk to Nels Cline? He's an amazing exponent of effects, combined with being an exceptional payer. That one might even rival the Graham Coxon episode!
I’ll just add - Mick here - I saw Nels in New York 10 years ago doing a performance with artist Notion Wisdom. It was one of the most moving performances I’ve ever seen. It was incredible!
Okay I've heard the name dropped before but have never really taken the time to look up any of Mr. Townsend's content and HOLY BALLS how have I even made it this far in life without knowing of this man!? I've got my day planned out already, I'm finishing this video then going back to older videos and looking up every single artist that has ever been honked or mentioned on this show.
When he brought up that he sees sounds as colors, that hit hard... I couldn't tell you what an A sounds like, but I know what it looks like and what it feels like in my head... The palette he uses is wonderful... I didn't know who he was before I watched this. Thank you guys, this was good and exciting to me. :)

And if you haven't heard strapping young lad....do it now! But devins endless spectrum is all felt and not just spewed out for no reason. Not only is he an immense talent and all round top bloke, but Devin is one of the most inspiring musicians around. Ocean Machine is one of my favourite albums of all time. I was lucky enough to catch him perform a Strapping/Ocean Machine double bill in Bradford somewhere around 1997 to an audience of 50 people (if that), so it's great that he has since commanded the recognition he deserves. Props to ya lad. ;-)
I saw him on that tour too, in Glasgow to around 30 people or so. "This P.A sounds really shitty so pretend it sounds huge" proceeds to melt my brain with how incredible a show it was.
@@7thwave42 High five to you man! He was roaming around the venue before the show just chatting to folk, and he was stood next to us eating a curry while watching the support band's set. We all invaded the stage during Strapping's last tune (at Dev's request of course). In fact there were more people on the stage by that point than were stood there watching, haha! Was a phenomenal gig though!
I also saw him in 1997 in Australia, around the same time both City and Ocean Machine came out. I saw SYL play under a metal roof above a concrete floor on a stage one foot off the ground, from 4 feet away. I have never been the same again...
Devin’s ambient playing reminds me so much of Steve Hillage from System 7 - Steve is probably the most underrated genius guitar player I know of. I used to swear that most of System 7s ambient sounds were keyboards until I watched them live and realised it was a guitar and a bunch of pedals used to brilliant effect. Thanks for the trip down nostalgia lane Devin, I really enjoyed this.
The ability to compose between every music genre while creating a new ones, is truly amazing. Really grounded fella, a "Mozart" of modern times in my mind, Devin Townsend. :)
I'm the same. I think hes the coolest person and is very talented Ofcourse! But I just dont really like his music, admittedly I haven't listened to all his stuff but some of the tones he gets are amazing.
This is genius. Slightly reminiscent of Gilmour tone. The sound on sound is unreal, like you are floating off cliffs with this Ocean Machine. Devin Townsend tone is wow!
It's really refreshing to see someone be interviewed by people who have a genuine and profound interest in the interviewee. Devy is such an amazing person, musician and spirit.
Devin Townsend is the most advanced, powerful, innovative guitar player and musician today. I love every single of his works but casualties of cool is one of the most misterious and beautiful albums ever produced.

This man Devin Townsend really does add depth to whatever he touches doesn't he ... ? I only listen to some "Metal" some of the time but his music never disappoints, once I start it playing I listen to the end.

Devin Townsend must be one of the most Talented Musicians I have ever discovered. It amazes me how he can go from ambient creamy tones, to flat out metal! His voice is also incredible! In fact it is incredible the he is both an amazing singer and guitarist all in one!! I would love to meet this guy!
Was introduced to Devin's music last week, not big into rock, but have been every so slightly addicted ever since? I'm a singer so watching his vocals is quite astonishing. It's as if he s channeling from another realm and I say that literally!!!! To watch him ten years ago and now... the progression with his music is staggering. Inspirational. I'd love a day in the studio with him. What a day that would be!
Devin is a man on fire... Didn't know the extent of his creative force and watching him work leaves me gobsmacked. Also enjoyed his admission of putting on the Spa Channel when he gets home to unwind. "Some hippie huffing into a flute with a dark ambient watercolor in the background..." Wow... I’m such a massive Devy fan and now his incredible talent makes so much more sense... he has synesthesia! Holy crap... of course he does... he can visualize his music and emotion in a way that others don’t, that’s why he can create such masterpieces and evoke so much emotion with out the more formal music theory training. He’s combined natural gifts with incredible hard work and dedication and has just mastered his craft, what a treasure.
My ocean machine should be here in two days. After watching this, I am giddy! So glad I found this... I knew by other videos it was going to be amazing, but watching DT demo it has totally opened the hood on why he designed it the way he did. I can't wait....

I love this guy. Discovered Devy a few years ago and feel like there are often no words to describe how transcendent and compelling Devin's music is. He seems like a genuinely decent and humble human being, as well as being an astonishing musical talent.
Im glad im not the only one who will resonate a sound and play with it for 10 mins with my pedals....then again those end up sounding better than my playing anyway.
