It’s a coffin apartment. They sell these to people who can’t afford the average apartment in Asian cities where space is priced at an all time premium due to scarcity, eg Hong Kong, Singapore. You rent a space that is literally the size of a coffin and share a room that has the max amount of coffin apartments crammed into it. They also all share a common bathroom and kitchen. Google it, it’s sad. They have families living in coffin apartments in Hong Kong. Naturally people who have the money to rent a bigger space do so. But that’s often tied up with issues such as immigration and land mismanagement. Hence why you’d see single parents, minorities, and illegal immigrants in these coffin apartments. The creators of the animation had Chinese names, and I’m glad they tackled one of the ugly realities of hyper capitalist cities like Hong Kong. Sincerely - a fellow Asian.

I used to live in a city with small space where there was a lot of loud noises from neighbors like people screaming, building renovation sounds, even a lady that had mental illness and was screaming almost every night and day. As someone who has lived in suburban America my whole life, the closest I've ever come to this is having to share a room with my younger sister for a year. Watching this incredible film, knowing that there are people in most of the world (and a lot even in my own country, I'm sure) who have to live their lives like this: It's so eye-opening. I don't know for sure what the intended moral of this video was, but for me, the moral is that I should never take for granted something as simple as a nice, quiet bedroom.

I guess in the end, we all kind of go through our own hardships in unexpected ways. The title coffin suits this animation nicely because in the end, the dude just wanted to sleep peacefully and shut out the rest of the world. And perhaps I may be interpreting this too strongly, but it took him actually ‘dying’ in his visualized struggles to finally pass out. Thus, he was able to sleep. In any sense, there’s an obvious theme here that several people can relate to, I myself included. It’s just so fascinating to see it all visualized by the talent of GOBELINS.
@Blizaros
@Blizaros 3 года назад
I interpreted the title more as having to do with the lack of life of the protagonist. He clearly is in a dead end, just subsisting through his job, crashing on his bed trying to sleep directly. With nightmarish work hours, a complete lack of private life, no peace of mind and nothing that seems to be truly his, this place is indeed a coffin, with not a semblance of life to be found.
@atleo456
@atleo456 3 года назад
Blizaros Very true, I could easily see that being the meaning of the title as well. Though the main focus of the animation seems to be the struggle of the protagonist trying to sleep, which I was linking back to the phrase “rest in peace” associated with death and coffins. And yet there were several elements just in that room alone preventing him was gaining said rest. Granted, the dude probably does have poor work hours.

I used to work with preschoolers and some would have autism with extreme sound sensitivity, so when I first saw this animation, I thought that's what this animation was tapping into. Reading the comments, it looks like this animation's purpose was to show how it feels to be in an actual coffin apartment in the asian countries, something I didn't know existed. This animation seems to touch on two different subjects at the same time and can be interpreted both ways. Which makes this an amazing animation.

I adore this channel for the variety of stories and talented artists that make such good short movies. I want to praise the animators who worked on the in-between frames for the characters. Because I don't feel like such smooth, fluid body language appears often enough in independent animation but it adds so much to the emotion! This piece is very well done, I'm impressed.

This. This is why animation is important. I had no idea that this was a thing until just now, they won’t teach it in schools and it wouldn’t just be common knowledge to the average westerner so... thank you for creating awareness and in such a relatable way. Really makes me think about life and how lucky I am to be where I am.

How can one such beautiful work, that was born out of a cause, care, excitement, a need to tell a story in a subdue yet very honest manner- how can this feel so sad? How come such a beautiful work can feel so personally sad? How can it be that even with such beauty, I still feel helpless and sure that even if I were to have people to share a passion with, I wouldn't be able to create such beauty of a work...

Very interesting and well done short film! Some impressions that I've got: it seems that the coffin nowadays lost its sacral purpose, a symbol of eternal rest for the dead, instead morphing into a small personal space designed to escape the everyday commotion, but in reality easily disturbed by the landscape of the urban jungle that is every person exercising their own needs (individuality) as much as they can with the limited resources they have in megapolises. And those needs clash for dominance, making everything around inflated, inconsiderate. But the life goes on. The residential area at the end of the video is like a massive mausoleum for the living, treated as a temporary stop. But it's a permanent resting place for a sense of community, because everyone is busy achieving their goals. So that's that. P.S. : the colour palette for the environmental art reminded for some reason of Æon Flux.

The short film is literally trying to show how our subconscious mind amplifies things that happen all around us. its very much relatable to people like us living in the chaotic cities ( not only coffins in hk) but at the end we all get used to it and sleep calmly even if there's so much happening around us. can't imagine whats it like in the cage apartments in HK.

Get out of cities, buy local from your communities and fellow neighbors, create or work in ways that support and contribute to your local community and you won’t have to live like this. Capitalism is a two way street. Socialism is this reality with no choice whatsoever, your government gets to choose everything, what housing, how big, where, how many people. Think of your government like a company, what happens when a company gets a monopoly? They gut the everything in their market and use the cheapest practices possible because they have no competition or reason to do otherwise (besides morals, but come on now, this is a company). So a government with a monopoly on everything from food, to housing, to wages etc would gut everything, to the biggest bang for their buck. People often think a big government will fix the issues with Capitalism, but it just gives the government the power to become the big bad company that ruins lives. Capitalism atleast gives you a choice by what you choose to buy and spend money on, competition between stores keeps prices low (what customers want) and if they want quality and ethical practices they will buy from brands who have quality and ethical practices. A big government would just laugh and give you your generic brand shoes made by child slaves in third world countries, because you have no choice not to, it’s your government and who rules you.

the details of this film is,,, wow. 0:10 the sign in the back says "no jumping off the building." 3:20 a chinese idiom "boiling frogs in warm water" describes how your situation may worsen bit by bit, and before you know it the situation becomes so bad there's no going back. Because the water started out warm, the frog won't feel like it's in danger, so if you gradually bring the temperature up till the water is boiling the frog will still be sitting (and dying) in the boiling water. 3:23 the posters in the back are all classic school posters. "Study well and improve everyday" literal translation "good good study day day up" lol very sure there's so many more details i missed to this amazing work.

I feel like noises like this mostly bother you when you don't feel completely safe. It doesn't even have to be physical threat, if you're someone where a noise or event usually requires your immediate attention or response, it can be hard to get out of the mindset of reacting to noise and being alert. For example some people are used to assuming they're in trouble for something when the door to their room opens, tthey may worry about over sleeping assuming noise is someone waking them up or a sign that morning has come, etc. Some people are adjusted to noisy environments, especially if they used to be in an even less stable or more dangerous place. You have to learn what's safe and what danger sounds like all over again. I think that's why these little noises illiceted imagery of threats. The roof of es coffin collapsing, a fire spreads, flooding, drowning. If you knew you were safe to rest, your brain wouldn't conjure up such imagery
