After her mother’s death, Kim finds solace in wearing her mother’s old sweater. However, the sweater begins to itch and even hurt her, but she still can’t bring herself to take it off.
Kim trouve son réconfort en portant le vieux pull de sa mère, récemment décédée. Bien que celui-ci commence à irriter sa peau et à lui faire mal, elle ne parvient quand même pas à s’en défaire.

We can all agree that the story is wonderfully melancholy but let's appreciate the true tragedy that is the fish that died when she smashed into the aquariums. An absolute horror story for any fishkeeper.

I'm pretty sure the fish aren't just fish to the story. They look like eyes. Just like the protagonist's eyes look like fish. To me they are like the eyes of the mother watching her daughter's every move. It's implied when Kim finds the sweater and gives a look to her aquarium. To me this fish dying represents her letting go of her mom. She saw the fish, she could have made a priority to save it and just have made peace with her mom. But she chose to fight for herself, even if it meant letting the "fish" die (letting her mom go), activally destroying the sweater (defending herself from her mom's toxicity), and putting her own safety (and well being) first. Just my interpretation though.

I think this was about the unhealthy relationship of abuse of control that exists between many mother child relationships, especially asian ones. How at first she liked the fact she had someone look out for her, but the moment she thought of relinquishing that control over her her mom started to suffocate her, emotionally blackmail her by showing her the good times etc.

i think it's sort of got two things going on. the start and end of it is about loss, and how we cope with it, and how the scars (good and bad) from past relationships stay with us and then in the middle of the film, when the mum is there through the sweater, it sort of exposes the daughter-parent relationship for not being perfect (starts off with her making ramen but it ends up with her almost killing her by the end, you have both sides)

I love how complicated this stories is. She is grieving, and you can really tell she loves her mother so much, but her mother obviously abused her in some ways and left some scars. The sweater resembles manipulation towards her daughter, if you analyze the film. The tighter the sweater reacts, and the daughter looks up to see herself with her mother from the past, the mother is actually trying to guilt trip the daughter for having a 'bad response' or a 'bad behavior'. Her mother's sweater is her own ghost of toxic manipulation. In the ending, the daughter burns the sweater because it mentally and emotionally abused her, and still when you look at the puddle, the mother is still there and will always be there. That means, the daughter has trauma.
@hayasheeeesh
@hayasheeeesh 15 дней назад
She will always remain figuratively and literally because Kim hasn't gotten rid of the entire sweater. There's still a piece attached to her nametag that she decided not to burn. In a way it's saying how her mom's abuse is still firmly tied to her identity.

I think that’s the reason why I don’t even want my mother to die. I just don’t want to deal with what’s next after her death. Even now I don’t know how to feel about her. She isn’t abusive anymore but it confuses me because it’s like she acts as if it never happened. Outright she denied at first so many things she did to hurt us. It doesn’t help that my older siblings try to not bring it up for fear of messing up what we have now. I don’t understand how they can live without knowing why it went all wrong and now we have to live as if it never happened. The root of the problem is still with us and I think I just can’t move on like this. I will one day find the answer hopefully and cry and maybe everything will be fine. Sorry it’s just I never could make sense of this.

I love the animation and use of beautiful stylistic elements. But the plot is a real stand-out. The story is quite haunting. Kim is struggling with her mum's passing. She misses her mum but there's also a darkness overshadowing her grief. Kim bares marks from old wounds. While she tries to move on she finds herself trapped between memories of love and happiness, while reliving physical and emotional trauma. Her anger at her past and desperation to leave everything behind climax in a very real, physical fight scene. At the end, Kim's mum seems vanquished and even physical traces of her life are gone. But Kim still baring physical and emotional scars begins to accept that she will always carry her mom and their relationship, good and bad, with her. This is my fave film from this year's crop so far. Well done.

This felt like how some mothers are so focused on controlling their kids to "keep them safe" that they don't realize how they're hurting and smothering them. The kids will have to struggle in order to get free and be their own person, and when they do, they hurt themselves in the process, but get up and move on.

This is a true masterpiece and a beautiful portrayal of such a troubling theme. It really showed the damaging effects of a suffocating and overbearing parental relationship, while regardless of how the mother hurt her daughter, she still felt remorse and had trouble letting her go. Not to mention the stunning animation.
@cristineclaudia1535
@cristineclaudia1535 3 года назад
To me, I think there are 2 ways at looking at this. First, it may be about how warm and loving but always hard and harsh relationship with mom (or any loved ones) can be. They may, in one way or another, over power or controll you whether you both realize it or not. And then, it may also be about how hard it is to let go. The sweater resembles the past, her mom who passed and their relationship as well as memories. She holds on to the sweater so much til it hurts her both physically and emotionally. At the end, though she realizes that she has to get rid of the sweater by burning it, she still feels that her mom is around (reflected on the puddle). Their love is always there.
@ioankou
@ioankou 11 месяцев назад
This is brilliant. I think it's pretty safe to say that the story is meant to showcase an unhealthy and abusive relationship between a mother and child, with the mother being extremely controlling and manipulative towards her daughter. The moment the young woman tries to let go, the mother starts suffocating her while reminding her of all the good moments they had, how much she loves her and needs her. And I like how it shows that it's extremely hard to get out of a situation like this. Because realizing that a person you love is abusive and trying to escape them is so difficult and you'll be left with plenty of scars and in need of a lot of healing. A story brilliantly told, the animation is beyond beautiful, with fluid movements, exceptional lighting and coloring. I'm a bit in love with this

i really liked the contrast between the fire and water. the mother died in a fire, twice. and her daughter, kim, is always shown with water. this can imply that kim and her mother were very different from each other. her mom even hurt her in that environment, it could be showing that her mom tried to take the things she liked or the way she behaved and twisted it to hurt her. i could totally be thinking too hard but it’s just something i noticed.

I feel this is about smothering helicopter parents, who look out for and care for their children but are overbearing. Even once they past the memory of them remains, and their impact on their children is inescapable. The sweater reminds her of her mother, both good and bad, and the thought of her is consuming and suffocating. Excellent short.

A lot of people are talking about how this short is about grief over the death of a loved one. I think it's about something more subtle but completely different, and one of the goals of the animation was to conflate the story mentioned in the film of a loved one dying, and another event in a relationship. Physical items represent the relationship between Kim and her mother, with the sweatshirt representing an emotional core in that relationship formed by Kim's mother taking care of her. Before the short starts, Kim and her mother have a fight. Kim ends up moving out of her mom's house. This is represented by the fire stylized to look like glass. Glass is the tool that later, Kim uses to quite literally cut her mother out of her life. Kim saves her mother's stuff from the fire, representing a desire to keep some form of relationship. In particular, her sweatshirt, the emotional, motherly core. Kim is alright with her mom's new presence in her life when she cooks food, and gently reminds her to clean the dishes. But Kim's mother starts being overbearing and controlling when she intrudes on other parts of Kim's life, namely her work and relationship with her coworker. Kim tries to push back, and they end up brutally fighting. At the end, Kim uses glass to slice the sweatshirt, cutting off her relationship with her mother emotionally, and burns the sweatshirt, representing how she removes all connection to her mom.

i think most ppl here agree that the sweater is a symbol of the past,, if she wasn't able to fully process her grief (which is what the central conflict is im p sure), maybe the emotional baggage she had with her mom from a complicated relationship is what started to spill over and hurt her when she was in this still emotionally raw state. another thing: there was a certain helplessness that i sort of picked up in both the way she watched the fire and how the fishes watched her struggle with the sweater which could've reflected how she felt in her relationship with her mom (water also has a lot of reflective connotations). maybe that's also why the sweater grew tight around her neck, callbacks to a controlling relationship that could've felt suffocating sometimes. also i think it's interesting that the mom died in a fire but water was such a key component to the imagery. what tends to stick to us the most is what hurts and in the sweater surviving the fire and her mom not, it's an inanimate object that can carry and trigger some of that baggage that can't speak and evolve like a person so it feels more like a symbol of the problems left unresolved. she's holding onto this physical reminder of her mom but it reminds her of what was wrong underneath too. maybe that's why she needed to burn it. idk it was so beautiful and bittersweet though. mother-daughter relationships are hard. i have no idea lol i was just putting out some ideas,, i'd love to hear what other ppl think :))

I think the sweater represents her relationship with her mother protective, warm, loving yet harmful. The sweater is physically suffocating at times and while it hurts her she can't help but see all the ways her mother has been good to her, then when she destroys the relationship it hurts her too. I think its realistic how at the end when she destroys the sweater a remnant still remains on her badge, something she'll carry with her every day yet she is no longer consumed by.

Showing the building burning down with only the fire moving and nothing else is really efficient as it shows how moments like this can be captured in just one still image being so surreal in reality its as if a painting or photo (something someone would usually only see in those formats and unlikely ever in real life), or could be a representation of having the fire move but the fire fighters not to symbolise the hopelessness of their efforts in her eyes (idk I'm not an expert or professional analysis person, I'm just giving my 2 cents) but its a good way of using a limitation to your advantage, saves animation time and still gives of an expression (or something, again I'm not an expert or trying to be one). I'm still trying to figure out the symbolism behind the fish if there is any, it seems like their might be as the video is really well done. If anyone has any ideas of what they think about it i'd like to hear.

Why her eyes looking like fishes, or fishes look like her eyes? Beautiful metaphor but I can't catch the meaning. I wish it could be series, I guess I can be super interesting. Thank you for your work!

I think not every stroke has to have a meaning, maybe there are some other ways to enjoy a piece of work by letting yourself feel it.

@@marcosmigues3600 I totally agree with you. But the reason why am I asking it is - it seems to me beautifull and once I also had a thought "What it will look like if try to make human eye looking like a fish" - so silly but may be it has a chance to exist as a feature? Also as for me (If I'll make a fan theory)) girl working in a pet shop among of hundreds of fishes that just look at her say nothing and help nothing just staring how she fighting with sweater - like society just staring at people who struggling with mental problems, having no reason and sometimes no chance to give a helping hand. - Again it can be beautiful metaphor with no reason o make any conclusion. Its always interesting to delve into the brains of author especially if work is relate to you))

@@marcosmigues3600 Thank you!) I'm happy, that I can share my thoughts) Thank you for listening) Also I'm sorry if word sounded rude, I didn't mean to offend anybody. I really appreciate this work, animation is gorgeous! But as for me really interesting to discuss it than just say how good it is (which is undeniable). Have a nice day too, or have a good night)

Aaw it's so nice to see so much listening and mutua compréhension on yt :)) we wanted to use fishes mainly as a metaphor for her , being stuck in her glass bowl. Also we just really loved the big eye fish design and we adopted it in her eyes too ;) just for funzies and simplification

i like how the story telling turns out. its nice to keep things that used to belong to someone you loved. but after a while it will start to hurt when you think about it. deep inside you remember how much they did for you and at the end it shows the mom behind her which means the mom will always look after her even without her old sweater

Learning to let go of the grief and let go of the loss isn’t easy. And this shows so well how it can leave you feeling beat up and strangled by those feelings. And it isn’t a straight road of success, sometimes you’ll get lingering scars. This is such a good portrayal, so much love for the artists, writers, voice actors, and sound artists.

I love this and everyone'll interpret it differently, but I see it as trying to deal with grief while also coming to terms with understand your relationship with your parent/relative/etc. wasn't healthy. It's hard to balance both because you love them, so you don't want to accept how they were hurting/suffocating/controlling you. It also feels like it's about trying to break free from your parents and their unfluence and how hard it is, even after they die

Ok this is what i understood... She is getting hurt by all the memories she has, by not letting go to well and for not expressing the pain she is going through un a healthy way... She never cries or talks about her mother's death... She has to grow with this feeling of pain because it will never go away, when we keep things like the sweater in our lifes, it will be a reminder of death and void on your heart (This is ny point of view)

( This work is very difficult to describe. The animation is of a very high standard. When you look, you will directly feel all the emotional depth of the scenes and what the main character feels. Just great . Although, I did not expect that the sweater, which previously behaved peacefully, would try to kill the girl. It can be seen that the work is with depth, and was done with diligence. )

My grandmother's mother I believe was just like Kim's mom. She was so resistant to let go of her grandchildren she wanted to love her grandchildren. My mother and sister experienced this spirit who I believe was my great grandmother. She would talk to my sister during the night. And she wouldn't let them sleep. But the only thing that I would remember that there were people from the church in my house when I was little. I now know why they were there in my house.
