Coin Rings...How To Round Over The Ends.

A number of people have asked how I round over the large edge of the coin. First if I plan on making a ring for someone special and I want it to be flat I use a dremel tool to sand down the lip on the edge of the coin, both inside and out. This allows the edge to lay flat. If I'm going to make it rounded over then I use my doming or dapping block. The video shows you how.

Thank you for the quick response to my question. I enjoyed both your tutorials on how to make these rings. I thought you needed a special tool also for the doppling cube but now I see all you need is a vice, which thank God literally I have. Thank you again for the quick response. I did run over to the Harbor Freight tool store and got one of the two punch and die sets they had left and also had one tear drop hammer left. Mine now. lol

You are doing a great job using the vise , but if you have the luxury to own a arbor press use it . I am using my Harbor Freight arbor press, along with my Harbor freight punch tool to make holes , which i found more stable , instead of wacking my punch with a hammer . I am pretty sure that if you use a arbor press along with your doming block to round over ends ,you have more control over it . Thank you for your vids , very informative .

I would love to see a video with some more information on making one flat also. I know you say that you use a dremel to do it, but when I tried it I got terrible results. Maybe I was using the wrong attachment ? Any help on using the dremel or a video demonstration would be awesome ! Thanks for the videos and info !

My grandfather made a coin ring in France on Christmas day 1918 after WW1 had ended. I have the ring and the edges are rounded. I was young when he told me this, but I think he said that he held it in a spoon while shaping it. Does that sound feasible?

I tried that with the dapping block in the vise. It didn't round out like that. Though I'm wondering if it was because I used a smaller coin at a larger size, so the width was much narrower. I used a Susan B Anthony dollar at size 15. 50 cent pieces are hard to come by, even non-silver ones. So I am having trouble finding larger coins to play with. Gold Presidential dollars are plentiful, but only marginally larger than a quarter.

I see where you put the doming block in the vise with the ring and squeezed it together, I tried this and I saw no results like yours. Can you elaborate a little more on it? or perhaps show some close up shots? I really enjoy your video (s) and by the way great looking car in the background too.

Thanks for the comments, The car is a 28 Studebaker Dictator and it's all original. To get your rings to size down and round over, you need to find the smallest hole that it will fit into and then start squeezing it down. If you use a larger hole it just smashes the ring. Some times you can start with a hole that the ring might fit into and squeeze it down a bit and then transfer it to a smaller hole to finish it up. If you have trouble with the ring fitting to low in the hole to squeeze it, I'll use a socket and use the back side of it to set against the ring to press it down in the hole. I hope this helps and good luck.

Hi Mile, What size is that dapping block and where did you get it from. Mine has only four depressions I can use as the others are too small. Yours looked to have many choices. Thanks

Just getting started on ring making from coins. Haven't even bought a dapping block yet but I've been looking at the vids of them being used. If you make enough rings would it not be worth the effort to buy a small vice and side mount it to a wall or work table so you are not fighting gravity?

Yeah I suppose it would help a bit. You would have to tape your aluminum angles in place to keep them from falling out and your going to be using a fairly heavy vise because you need one that will open about 4" and has a sturdy enough main screw to handle the work. This just happens to be where my vise is mounted and that's where I use it. You have to remember that I'm old and this was just a hobby for me while it was so cold outside. My interest and hobbies change faster than socks. While it was fun to make up a lot of them and let the family pick out their ring sizes...I don't seem to be making too many these days. I still make a few special rings now and then but not like I was.

Hi there! I have a questions: How do you get rid of or make the ring without one side of it being flared out a bit. Rather, how do you avoid getting a dog bowl shaped ring? The few rings I've made so far always have one side of it slightly more flare out than the other. Thanks!

+TheGrayWolf81 The only way that I know to keep this from happening is to take a dremel tool and file off the lip that stand off the outer edge. Take both sides down flush with the surface of the coin. Be careful not to scratch up the letters. After the ring is made make sure both end are the same size on your mandrel. Some times you can shrink the fat end of the ring in your dapping block then take your dremel tool and file away the inside lip to get a nice flat surface. This is a tough problem because the outer lip is thicker than the inside. Good luck.

I live with my wife and I still do pretty much what I want, she's a pretty good Gal and I don't fuss at her about doing things and she doesn't fuss at me, I told her I'm not your boss and your not my boss, so we get along pretty good.

to do this do you have to have a silver coin or will it do the clad coins as well ?
@oldporchdog
@oldporchdog 9 лет назад
I found that I am able to do it with any coin. I have made rinds from coins all around the world and even Chucky Cheese tokens. The only thing that I haven't been able to make a ring out of was an aluminum Good Luck Token. The aluminum just split and didn't stretch.

uncle mike....does this technique work on silver coins????
@oldporchdog
@oldporchdog 8 лет назад
+Ruben Arteaga Yes it does. You just have to remember to anneal your coin first (heat it with a torch). Once you heat the coin and quench it in water it will make the coin softer and easier to bend. The only material I have not been able to make a ring out of was aluminum. I found a good luck token and thought it would make a nice looking ring. I was wrong it just split and the next one melted on me when I over heated it. So aluminum is out of the question but all other coins work fine.
