The first president in Chinese history was Sun Yat Sen in 1911. Sun Yat Sen handed his presidency over to Yuan Shi Kai in 1912. Sun Yat Sen promised Yuan Shi Kai the presidency in exchange of military assistance for a peaceful transition from an Empire towards a Republic. Yuan Shi Kai was a high ranking military officer at the deposed Imperial Court and was therefore instrumental. Persona grata in the West and excessively ambitious, he transformed into a dictatorship and made San Yet Sen's party illegal in 1913. In 1915 he attempted to restore an unpopular Imperial dynasty and finally died in 1916, frustrated and resented.
