You know you can trust CoinWeek to tell it like it is. In this episode of CoinWeek's popular Uncool Coins!, rare coin dealer Russ Augustin of AU Capital Management shares with us the story of one of the U.S. series' great rarities, an 1879 Stella $4 gold pattern. This is a coin that often sells for well over $150,000. But this is no average example.
Instead of being preserved in its original state by a fastidious collector, it was "spent" and later mounted on a necklace. By whom? and Why?
These are the questions we sought answers to. You certainly won't want to miss this tale of moral turpitude!

4 dollars circa 1880 would have been a hell of a lot! An adult factory worker only made 35$ per month and a private in the army/navy only 13$. A skilled blacksmith only about 60$. I doubt very few of these were passed as payment for a nights "entertainment". Good video though! Also, do more colonials and ancients/medieval coins!

The Birdcage Theater in Tombstone, Arizona, at the height of the silver boom was awash in prostitution at the same time. A night with one of their wondrous ladies would run you about $25. I'm sure in San Francisco at the height of the Gold Rush, the price was much higher. $4 to a Congressman was no big shakes in 1879-1880.
