Day 1 of a brisk December winter weekend in the Allegheny National Forest mapping out some new forest roads and trails, some of which are only open during hunting season. Brought the diesel heater and plenty of layers for the cold. Joined on the trip by Nick ‪@trailoverland6462‬ in his TJ. We stumbled upon some awesome stuff and had a great time before the rain came in for Day 2.

Wonder if that crater was from an old oil or gas well they removed?

maybe, i'm still leaning towards a mini rock mining area since the boulders looked like the ones they'd use as trail / road barriers

So it appears the place you camped is just a short distance back FR 122 from the Red Bridge recreation area. Is that correct?
@DarksideOffRoad
@DarksideOffRoad Год назад
Yep that general area has a few unmarked and marked sites in it you can look for 👍

Great video. Do you publish your Gaia trails?

Thanks. I don’t, but that’s also why I note the roads and areas in the videos/descriptions as long as they are publicly accessible and legal.

@@Roblet217 you’ll be fine on everything but Henstep and Sharpback Hollow. Those are the only two trails that really should have high clearance.

Silly question, but last year up there I frequently didn't have cell service. Does Gaia work as a true GPS would when no cell service is available?
@DarksideOffRoad
@DarksideOffRoad Год назад
It will as long as you’re on a device that’s cellular capable. Just download your map layers first. 👍

Can you take a side by side on those roads or an atv
@DarksideOffRoad

These are marked county / us roads so I don’t believe so. The forest website or ranger station would know better than I would though.

Officially, probably not. But the reality is this is an extremely remote area, and anyone you see probably is just going to smile and wave or just generally ignore you. Just be respectful.

Do you like Gaia or onX off road better?
@DarksideOffRoad
@DarksideOffRoad Год назад
I have both and I use them for different things. I use Gaia for research, trip mapping prep and real-time tracking. I use OnX for trip research to see where popular trails / roads are and map it on Gaia.

We were fishing the Juniata river one time and a big tree fell right across from us. It was pretty cool to watch. I definitely need to put my Jeep in that gravel pit you found. I guess I have to wait until they open the road again in October though.

Oh by the way... my Florida off road trip was amazing. I ended up just taking pavement until we reached Florida. Osceola and ocala national forest along with a state forest. The trails are nothing like what we're used to. I would be willing to go back this spring if your interested. Hitting sandy / muddy trails with the top down in January was A OK 👍

I know I have been on those narrow trails and it's bugging me on their exact location. At first I thought it was the owned by bradford water authority. Talk about some pretty fun trails. Can you give me a hint where that narrow trail is? I would greatly appreciate it. I have pretty much been on about 90% of the trails in the entire area. Or was that Collins pine Co land? Hm

Only willing to share what I shared in the video. It is on USFS land though and un-gated, so no worries of trespassing. It's near FR267.
