Cold e-mailing is by FAR the most important skill if you don't have a job. If you're at a non-target or have no finance experience, you NEED to play the numbers game and reach out to tons of people in order to get any interviews. I reached out to 300+ people to get my first paid internship as a sophomore.
Make sure your e-mail is concise (5-8 sentences) and professional. Personalize the e-mail and have a specific call to action. Systematically track all of your outreach and remember to follow up with people.

I’ve been loving all of these videos, they are very informative and perfect for what I’m looking for! Are there any books you suggest I read if I am interested in getting into investment banking?
@PeakFrameworks
@PeakFrameworks 3 года назад
I think the best overall book is the Rosenbaum & Pearl book, but it's pretty academic and dense. That's still what I mostly used to prepare, so I still recommend it. We'll probably come out with a comprehensive recruiting course next year.

Yes, I wouldn't re-send the entire thing again. Just do a quick one or two sentence e-mail. Say that you're following up and that you're still very interested in chatting. Then try to suggest a tangible time to chat (e.g. over the next two weeks).

Just a technical thing but in order to get the chapters to work (as you have the timestamps in the description), you need to start the time codes at 0:00. Like "0:00 - Intro". That should trigger RU-vid to add the chapters functionality to the video and make it easier to navigate. Keep up the good videos!

Not a lot, but there are a few. A lot of the bulge brackets have small offices there, but each only has 1 or 2 analysts so it functions very much like a satellite office. Same goes for PE. HIG and Sun Capital are probably the big players, but even they don't have huge funds.

There are a people from my school working in NYC and I'm wondering If a LinkedIn message would be a good instrument in case I can't find their e-mails. Also, which'd you think it'd be a good link to mention knowing that investment clubs didn't exist back then. Thanks for the info!

Great video. I’m a US/UK dual citizen (going to study at a UK university) and I think I want to spend my first year summer in the US (bachelors here take 3 years). Are there opportunities for US freshmans/sophomores I could apply to? Would cold emailing be helpful?
@PeakFrameworks

Yeah for sure, cold emailing is going to be your best tool! Make sure your resume and story are solid and then reach out (to alumni, people in your target city) like crazy.

Now or next month is good for first year internship roles. Just make sure you're coming off professionally - might be good to get an older student review your emails and mock you over the phone.

Hi Matt, what would you recommend as an email to reconnect with people you've already had coffee chats with recently to express your interest in interning for the summer?
@PeakFrameworks
@PeakFrameworks 3 года назад
I would just be straightforward. Say you enjoyed connecting them before and have been interested in learning more about their firm. You are looking for an opportunity in that space for this summer and are wondering if their firm is hiring. Attach your resume. Pretty similar to an initial e-mail, just add a bit more pleasantries that reference your prior coffee chat / interactions.
@keir6464

Hi Matt, what would you recommend putting as the subject line/title of the E-mail? I am currently using "request to connect" or "Your experiences in Investment Banking". what do you think? :)
@PeakFrameworks
@PeakFrameworks 3 года назад
I just used "Reaching Out". What you're using is fine as well. If you have some share background, you can try to mention that in the email title, e.g. "Ivey student reaching out". Don't overthink the title too much :)

Hey Matt , I’m Ryan I’m currently a Junior undergraduate Mass Media Production student . I am however planning to switch career paths after graduation into the banking and investment industry. I have followed your videos for the past few months and want to know what advice you might have for a non traditional individual such as myself?
@PeakFrameworks
@PeakFrameworks 3 года назад
I think you should try joining the top investment and finance clubs at your school and try to get some relevant finance internship before graduating. Intern at search funds. If you graduate without any finance experience, it'll be tough to break in afterwards. If you can't get anything, then maybe do a 1 year masters in finance to get another shot at recruiting.

do you recommend emailing multiple people at the same firm? example being 3 of the partners of a small 10 person firm or just 1 of them?

I would just start with 1 of them and then rotate if they don't get back to you after a few weeks.

would i be reaching out to the recruitment team of the department i'm looking to get into, or reaching out directly to the employee's of that department?
@PeakFrameworks
@PeakFrameworks 3 года назад
Depends on the firm, but I generally find directly to employees to be better. Generally, the smaller the firm the more power the employees have. Larger firms tend to rely more on HR.

I tried this strategy and I think the success rate of getting response is low compared to following the usual process of job application (thru ATS, system review, recruiter call, hiring call, final interview and job offer). I resorted to doing this tactic because I am someone who dislikes recruiters a lot. I have so many terrible experience working with recruiters who have no clue of what they are hiring for and profiling me to opportunities that do not even match my experiences, talents and gifts. So far, I have reached out to 30 "possible" hiring managers, 11 of them responded, 7 got me into calls, 3 interviews and 0 offer yet. My advice is whilst you will do this strategy, it is still a must to follow the usual hiring process (even if working with recruiters is excruciating, you can only work with them at a certain amount of time until you get hired).
@OCC5942
@OCC5942 Год назад
UPDATE: I reached out to 33 potential hiring managers. 12 of them responded and 8 of them got me into calls, 5 of them progressed to interviews and got 2 job offers. I started doing this on February 13, 2023 and ended June 2, 2023. So, it took me almost 4 months to succeed in this strategy.

If you're trying to get into finance, a degree is pretty necessary. But if you don't want to get a degree and have no connections, then yes, cold e-mailing is probably the only way you'd ever get any experience.
