In order: 0:41 Ellen Cleghorne as Tina Turner 0:53 Mike Myers as Garth Brooke 1:07 Chris Farley as Jerry Garcia 1:18 Kevin Nealon as Michael Bolton 1:31 Julia Sweeney and Melanie Hutsell as The Judds 1:46 Tim Meadows as Aaron Neville 1:58 Phil Hartman as Elton John 2:10 Michael McKean as Elvis Costello 2:23 David Spade as Kurt Cobain 2:51 Sarah Silverman as Cher 3:05 Jay Mohr as Anthony Kiedis (with someone as Flea?) 3:32 Rob Schneider as K.D. Lang 3:47 Adam Sandler as Axl Rose
Elvis Costello performed on SNL a year or two before this. He looked more like Chris Farley as Jerry Garcia. Costello had a long beard and hair and shades around that time.
This is so damn hilarious. The way the lyrics keep going back to "this is really hard to understand, etc." is freaking hilarious. They perfectly captured what everybody was thinking about this news story. And just the idea that a "we are the world" style song would be used to explain a political story is genius.
This is why I watched SNL back in the day. Funny and interesting. Sadly, I doubt the talent to pull off a similar skit exists. Nor the balls to tell the truth about certain political figures.
"HI I am Elton John! You might remember me from such albums as Don't Shoot Me I Am Only the Piano Player and Captain Fantastic and The Brown Dirt Cowboy!!"
@@joesimon2029 Agreed! Hartman was the greatest cast member IMO and this era is definitely the Dream Team. Farley, Myers, Sandler, Spade, Rock, Jan Hooks, Victoria Jackson, Miller/Nealon/Norm, Rob Schneider, just A list cast and characters top to bottom.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think all the singers are supposed to be the following: 0:41 - Tina Turner 0:54 - Tim McGraw 1:07 - Jerry Garcia 1:19 - Michael Bolton 1:32 - Carnie and Wendy Wilson 1:47 - Aaron Nevelle 1:59 - Elton John 2:10 - Elvis Costello 2:24 - Kurt Cobain 2:52 - Cher 3:05 - Anthony Kiedis 3:34 - Rick Astley 3:50 - Axl Rose
1) People will debate - back and forth - on which era of SNL was the best. The "fan favorites: seem to be a draw between the "Eddie Murphy" period and the ORIGINAL 1975 cast . I feel (and some will agree) SNL was at it's PEAK from about HERE - this very cast - thru the Will Ferrell / Cheri Oteri cast. Or somewhere therein. Late 1980s - late 1990s aprox. 2) This skit is friggin' HILARIOUS , not only because of what it's about (the very confusing Whitewater "scandal" - of which - sounds like a joke compared to what's going on today) and 2:32 This is THE FIRST time in HISTORY anyone has done an Elvis Costello impersonation ! LOL. And did it well ! LOL. And let me tell you : a LOT of that 1975 cast and The Eddie Murphy years - does NOT hold up well .. at all . So , yeah, Late 1980s to late 1990s - the best casts , writers , and the best weekend updates!
To be honest, the Democrats have made much more out of much less with the so-called Trump tax scandals they've prosecuted him for. Whitewater was a lot worse than some of these trumped-up, no pun intended, Trump scandals. This cast was at the tail end of the era you're describing. This is one of Phil Hartman's last episodes, near the end of his eighth year. This year is probably the last really good year of the show. Mike Myers left soon into the next year. Once Carvey, Hartman, and Myers had left, the show was pretty much done as a reliable source of laughs.
This is amazing, and so is the musical composition. It's walking on the wire all the time, but I believe it incredibly would resist any lawsuit by plagiarism!
Woow, never knew that was Sarah Silverman as Cher in this sketch.. She must have been...how old? This was from 1993 SNL year, she was born 1970, so...23 years old? Man she was a babe when she was a baby, and tbh she killed the mannerism of Cher. I couldn't recognize until I've read it begore that is was here. So basically I'm just saying that I took me by surprise right now, as I am writing this. That it was actually her and she looked great and did a good job. Knew all her work as a comic and roaster. Nice one Sara.
Oh poor SNL, how far they have fallen from what it used to be. This was definitely some of the best years, BUT maybe bringing Shane Gillis in to host is a sign of a turn around... i hope.
sanoban There's also Kurt Cobain (Spade), Michael Bolton (Kevin Nealon), Flea and Anthony From RHCP (Jay Mohr and Norm Mcdonald) and I Believe Tim Meadows is Prince. As for Chris Farley, Mike Myers, Julia Sweeney and the other girl, I don't know.
The only ones I could name today were Cher, K.D. Lang, Michael Bolton and Tina Turner and I was born in the '70s. And I mistakenly thought David Spade was Tom Petty.
Lots of top tier SNL stars, but this has to be one of the unfunniest SNL skits ever. Most of the parodies aren't even close, like Anthony Kiedis and Kurt Cobain - Weird Al did a far better Kurt impression. And the topic just isn't funny.
The Whitewater scandal was something that actually happened. SNL still parodies things that actually happened Unlike whatever people imagine happened with Hunter Biden.
Quite low, few of them are visually recognisable, but most of them don't have the basic ability to imitate. Funny maybe just for some American Republicans
The fact that you think only Republicans would find it funny is very strange. SNL lampooned everybody back then. And the humor in this sketch is hardly attacking Clinton. It's just parodying how confusing this news story is while stating plain facts in the lyrics.
