Cold Steel Laredo SK-5 Bowie: Value Fighter

There are indeed few affordable, large, traditionally-styled combat Bowie knifes out there. Affordable to me, for this type of knife, is around $100. Say what you want about Lynn Thompson and his ways, but his company Cold Steel again has helped solve that problem with the outstanding Laredo bowie knife in SK-5 high carbon steel. This is the much more affordable version of the CS Laredo Bowie knfe in VG-1 San Mai III stainless steel. This Laredo is also an excellent alternative for the absurdly expensive CS Natchez Bowie (still wicked cool though). For around $100 this BIG Bowie inspires confidence with its massive and fast 10.5 inch (26.7cm) blade. Full flat ground with a very deep swedge (unsharpened), this blade should chop exceedingly well both in defensive encounters (heaven forbid) or better yet in the wilderness woodscraft. It inherits all the good qualities of a properly designed Bowie knife. Indeed the SK-5 Nutnfancy says the Laredo would function equally well in either role. More upsides would include the large handle providing adequate real estate for multiple holds, the bright brass-finished cross guard that will prevent forward hand slippage, the realistic wood finish, the 5/16 inch (8mm) thick steel, the strong leather sheath, and a great balance and feel. Downsides would be the propensity for rust on the unfinished SK-5 steel, somewhat sharp edges on the traditionally-styled coffin handle, and most alarming, the sheaths propensity to put scratch marks on the otherwise perfect blade. Cold Steel really needs to investigate the Laredo sheath issue and fix it; having a brand-new blade scratched (not rubbed) by its own leather sheath is infuriating. However, for Nutnfancy at least at this price point , that isnt a deal killer for this high value fighting and survival knife. Thats because at this price point, you will not find a comparable large fighting, traditional Bowie. Also, while I havent hard tested SK-5 steel, I predict it will serve quite adequately for any realistic purpose. The Cold Steel Laredo in SK-5 then provides most of the cutting performance of the larger CS Natchez Bowie or even customs for a fraction of its cost. It excels in Two Kinds of Cool (Nutnfancys term): a very capable and practical cutter/thrust cutter AND an ability giving its owner a distinct pride of ownership and blade enjoyment.
Nutnfancys Likeability Scale: 8 out of 10 (would be a 10 if sheath was squared away)

San Mai is laminated steel, which means that they take a very "hard" steel like VG-1 and sandwich it between two outer layers of very "strong" stainless steel like 420J. That means you get a blade that holds an edge very well, but will not break from being brittle. Also alot of CS's San Mai blades come with a hand sharpened convexed edge. (which is a good thing). .....as far as the price difference, it's a matter of preference, the SK-5 modle shown here is a great knife for the money.

Picked up my Laredo Bowie last week, based soley on your review and recommendation. No regrets ! Firstly, it cost me $175.00. Worth it ! Secondly, mine was made in the US of A !!! Thirdly, the sheath does not scratch the blade! Fourthly ( is that even a word ?), the edge AND the swedge are razor sharp from the factory ! There is nothing for me to correct or modify - knife and sheath are perfect !!! Thanks Nutn, for the great review that piqued my interest that led me to buy the most beautiful knife I've ever owned - with quality to match ! Keep up the excellent and honest reviews, they truely help.

@chillthelaebe VG-1 is quite expensive, I believe, as far as steel goes. There's also the fact that the steel is laminated, and I don't think laminating stainless steels is any easy task. So it seems to me that a large portion of the price comes from those two factors. I do agree, though. Cold Steel's knives (and swords) are often way too expensive for production blades. I think that's why Cold Steel has been producing more economical alternatives lately.

If anybody is interested SK5 is the Japanese steel garade equal to AISI 1085. This is an ideal steel for long knives/ machetes as it is a bit springy-er than most

The scratch comes from the brass belt stud! A lot of the blades used by Cold Steel are actually made by another company called Windlass in India - and their sheaths/scabbards are a huge weak point. It's worth replacing the sheath with a homemade kydex.

As those marks on the side of the blade don't make sense from leather, especially if you've run into this repeatedly, I'm betting this is the result of poor QA during the shaping or sharpening process. Did you ever find out more?

great vid ,,but that sheath scratching is unforgivable..quality control should have checked that..you really should have got an exchange/replacement and cold steel will get it back in their face..I've bought cheaper blades which have adequate sheaths that don't have a piece of swarf in them..

No, weight isn't so much an issue for me. I'm rather a Fitzen type of guy ;) What got me interested in the Rukus is it's big, thick blade. Man, what a chunk of S30V! First I planned on buying a full sized Skirmish but I'm not very happy with that recurved blade cause it causes severe problems with japanese waterstones or benchstones in general. But the Rukus is perfect in respect of the bladeshape and I like the look just as much :)

My laredo gets the exact same scratches on it, and it has nothing to do with putting it in the wrong way. I also get similar scratches on my Fallkniven Thor bowie, which is dissapointing on a $400+ knife. I wish these knife companies would put just a little more effort into the sheaths they make for their knives.
@mark7426
@mark7426 14 лет назад
Hey this might not be the reason for the scratches on yours, but on my cold steel bowie I found that the sheath had some of those little moisture absorbing beads inside a little packet. Though I didn't see them right away and just put the knife straight into the sheath and ripped the little bag and the little beads went everywhere. This then made a terrible sound until I had managed to remove them with quite some trouble as I had pushed them right to the very bottom while putting the knife in.

Generaly speaking, no. San mai III uses two different stainless steels. The edge is made of more brittle but very good edge retaining steel and has a layfer of stronger steel on the rest of the knife. The SK5 is one steel. However, it still has a very good edge retention and the knife is very strong. The edge itself is for sure is stronger and if need be can probably handle wood chopping where SMIII would chip. Stick with the SK5

Some titanium alloys have a very good ratio of hardness to weight, but the maximum hardness still never approches the range that steel achieves. Titanium, as mentioned above, is also not as wear-resistant as steel. Hardness and wear-resistance are among the attriutes that contribute to edge retention. Titanium knives are very lightweight and corrosion-proof but they dull too easily even when compared to mediocre cutlery-grade steels.

Hi Skanky, I tell you try a well made knife made of 440C. Excellent steel. Cheap knives using '440' are made from 440A or 440B which are medium carbon and in my opinion not great for blades. I have used 440C before and it is a very good steel . As a daily knife user,I personally detest S30V and 154CM as I find them time consuming to sharpen and over brittle. My favourite SS is the under-rated & difficult to get Sandvik 12c27. It takes a razor edge and resharpens easily. Highly recommended

He was looking about Laredo in San-Mai. In SK-5 it costs around 200 EUR right now, including delivery. It is so, cause we pay VAT two times: in US and in the EU. Buy the way, CS made new Natchez Bowie in SK-5, it is heavier and cheaper. Maybe it will be good for a wood tasks. 200 - 250 USD or something. It's ok.

I have the same knife and it also has the same scratch. The stud is two parts, very much like the brass button on your blue jeans. It scratches toward the tip because of how the knife is withdrawn. I hate when idiots on youtube hit you with the "thumbs down" when they don't know what they're talking about. I wish I could reach through the monitor and slap a tard sometimes....
@kwstikas82
@kwstikas82 16 лет назад
NEVER run your fingertips against the cutting edge to checkout its sharpness. If the knife is too sharp, you may cut yourself in the first half of the first inch of touching. Instead, touch gently the edge with your fingertip and move your finger from left to right and so on. If the knife is sharp, you will feel the blade in the dents of your fingerprints

Are there any production bowies with similar size and design as the Natchez, but with a cheaper high carbon/non-stainless steel by other companies? Some big bad bowies out there but made from crappy 440. Laredo is great, but looking for something a little bigger

@Littlejon126 15 лет назад
Ah, no kidding! I apologize Aero - you're right. Mine happens to have a very similar scratch coming from the same area but it's certainly from the stud on mine!! I guess I should've looked more carefully on his - I just automatically assumed it had the same ill as my own knife.
@KiltPatrick
@KiltPatrick 15 лет назад
It doesn't wear as fast as steel. It'll dull itself if you do a LOT of cutting. That's why you never see titanium, like, ball bearings in engines, or places where it'll rub against something a lot. Plus the cost. I've seen titanium knives, nothing fancy, run for $300 dollars. For, like, a 4" blade.

Scratch: 1 ?: Could be last minute quality control sanding or filing some of the metal hardware on the sheath and a small piece of metal got sewn inside that final product?? That sure LOOKS like a Metal on Metal 'scratch'. 2 ?: The under side of that gold frog stud has a metal backing exposed and is rubbing the blade each time you go in or out with the blade.

@Umimugo You were probably looking at the VG-1 San Mai III version. On Cold Steel's website, the SK-5 version is $274.99, which is still pretty damn expensive. You can get it on Kult of Athena (can't post the link to the website because of RU-vid) for $139.95, though. In contrast, you can also get the San Mai III version of the Natchez on Kult of Athena for $329.95, which is a LOT cheaper than the retail price.

In a way the false edge increases the damage of a thrust attack because as the knife penetrates the target the false edge doesn't cut, but presses the sharp edge. Increasing the cut.

Nutn, if you use a well used leather strop ( with black compound) I have found that if you run the knife blade flat across it you can remove lighter scratches in knives. It worked wonders on my Boker Kwaito and Sere 2000 knives. Good luck.PS the leather I used has never actually been on a strop but has been used for the same purpose.
