Love what you’re doing Chris. A friend of mine Rob and I just went lobster fishing in San Diego Bay premium evenings if you haven’t done it I recommended. Once again love what you’re doing

Great video. Hardcore filming out in the water, shoulda done it a the launch, I kept thinking you could go into the water! I can't stand the cold personally, I like what you suggested. The only situation I don't see this working is if the launch is rough, and there's a good chance you will go in the water. I'd wear a full wetsuit to launch, then change out of it and into the layers like you have. And yeah, I want to get a winter trip out to LJ and get into the deepwater yellows!

Sweet been waiting for this one. Thanks Chris. Additionally, I have the NRS endurance paddling jacket and it works great, keeps me warm and dry. I have some neoprene waders, but they are tough to get in and out of so unless its really cold I don't wear them, but they are very warm. marks on sounder at 6:30, doesnt look like fish but :eyes:

I really miss the water/weather in San Diego, thanks for making these videos Chris, it brings me back home in a way. one day I can come back and maybe ill see your orange Hobie and wave at ya on the kelp haha! Ive found in the cold and rough northern WA waters that a pair of wool pants, and some long undies in the winter with a couple pairs of wool socks inside my xtra tuffs and a warm coat and sweat shirt underneath does me well, especially if I have my scarf which I even use in the summer around my head and shoulders if I'm shirtless. when I see squalls coming or the waves are kinda big on the launch ill pop on my rain pants and jacket. they go right back into the hatch when I'm not using them though or else I get too hot. I usually keep extra socks in my hatch too because my biggest thing that will make me head in early is cold feet! I can definitely see why wool is so expensive and sought after, ive been up to my knees in waves landing the yak sometimes and the only thing that was totally soaked were the cotton undersocks I had on. I dunno where the water goes with wool because it's not wicking off, but it doesn't get on my skin haha. I used to use wool socks as booties in my dive fins spearing around La Jolla after an old timer told me that the old school bottom scratchers used to do that before neoprene. at the time I was poor(er) and couldn't afford dive booties. I have nothing against waders but I'm lazy and tend to just wear more "normal" clothes in layers. just personal preference for me; I see lots of other fishermen out here wearing them or some kind of bibs at least. anyways thanks again for the vids, I love seeing the scenery and such from my home.

Great video, I’ve been wondering what to wear or how to stay dry when beach launch. You will always get a little wet and I was wondering if it’s ok to wear waders. It’s a good idea to have them and then just take them off once you get past the waves

Hey boss, great video. I wanted to ask what do you target out of la jolla in January and February? I am looking for a way to stay engaged with fishing while eliminating rockfish bycatch but not setting myself up to get skunked.
@chrisblevinsfishing
@chrisblevinsfishing 3 года назад
No surprise there, I fish for YT and WSB all winter long. I will say, if you aren't willing to get completely skunked, than yellowtail fishing probably isn't for you. You must be willing to get skunked repeatedly to have a chance to catch these fish. Going out for the morning and trying for the yellows for only a couple hours just won't cut it on any but the very best days out there... which is probably one 1/20th of the days. On this channel you really dont see all the trips I get completely blanked while trying to locate these fish. Fish with BIG greenbacks on the dropper loop and you will eliminate a lot of the small bycatch, and when you do get your bite... it will be the right kind. Cheers Bro!

Love the video Chris! I’m actually looking for a wader as my Xmas present. I’m curious, when you are wearing the wader with the stock boots, does your feet get wet at all, or not?
@chrisblevinsfishing
@chrisblevinsfishing 3 года назад
Hey Rodrigo! Good to meet you at the launch the other day! To answer your question, no your feet don't get wet through the stockingfoot. Eventually, after a couple years or so they might develop small leaks in the stockingfoot which will let in water slowly. I usually just buy an new pair every year or 2 but you can also use neoprene glue to repair the socks over time. The nicer the waders you get, they will definitely last longer. Also it helps to preserve the socks if you wear crocks or some slippers over the socks while you are walking around on shore. Obrigado Irmao!
@robercalvo8362
@robercalvo8362 3 года назад
@@chrisblevinsfishing I actually had the same question. I thought the stockingfoot was made of neoprene material so I was trying to figure out how do you keep your socks dry. I gather from your comment that the stockingfoot is 100% waterproof. Thank you for the great info Chris!

@@chrisblevinsfishing thank you very much, for this great information. I’ll definitely get a wader, since we spoke the other day at the launch, I’ve been fishing at SD Bay and LJ , and I can definitely feel how cold can be at 6am and the use for a warmer fishing gear. It was very nice to meet you and your wife as well. Valeu irmão! Obrigado!

Great video Chris! Super informative and I will be wearing my waders this Winter! Question for you... Are you wearing any type of wader booties or wading shoes over your wader neoprene feet? The reason I am asking is I have breathable waders for float tubing and they were around $300.00. I'd hate to put a hole in the neoprene feet area. Any info is appreciated! Your content is EPIC!
@chrisblevinsfishing
@chrisblevinsfishing 3 года назад
Thanks Pete! I don't wear any footwear on the water, but for walking on shore I actually wear an oversized pair of cheap crocs over the booties. They are cheap, durable and drain easy, and they float if they fall overboard. They work out pretty well. Those sound like nice waders, you have Simms?
@pilotpeteproductions8229

@@chrisblevinsfishing Dude you are awesome! Thank you so much for your tips! Your videos are epic knowledge only learned from the amount of time you spend on the water! I literally soaked in every bit of information you share! Still binge watching all your videos I have not seen yet! Yes I believe they are Simms. I bought them from a Fly Fishing shop in OC called Bob Marriott's. They are like the Louis Vutton shop for Fly Fishing LOL. I'll be hoping to stick my first Yellow from my Hobie soon! Seriously, your on the water knowledge with reading the sounder and deep drop is off the chart epic! Thanks my friend and looking so very much for your upcoming episodes! So Stoked!

That will be next. I mean.... I never said it wouldn't be cold, but as far as sinking I don't think it's a concern. Especially with a PFD and splash jacket. Jim Sammons already did this video back in the day, granted it was in a pool on a warm looking day. As I say, use your own discretion. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OYwG52p4yjs.html

If they filled up with water because it got past the upper belt, that should be tight enough to seal against your body. Then you would remove the waders while still in the water. Once the waders are off you get back in the kayak. When they get water inside the only problem is the weight of the water inside prevents you from being able to rise yourself above the surface. You can't sink, just because they fill with water, the water is the same as what is all around you and not any heavier.
@rastavibes1000
@rastavibes1000 3 года назад
@@chrisblevinsfishing Robert Field has a video where he was salmon fishing and one of the guys flipped his yak w/ a dry suit but left the relief zipper open. He ad a real hard time. So I just want to see if waders would be the same. The weight and the cold water gave him a hard time.
@chrisblevinsfishing
@chrisblevinsfishing 3 года назад
@@rastavibes1000 hard time getting back in the boat is different than sinking to your death. I think many people would have a hard time getting back in their boats with the shock of cold water regardless of what they are wearing. If I am floating I can get my waders off if I have to, maybe not the case in a dry suit. I haven’t seen the video but I could also imagine the danger was played up to add drama to the video. But you don’t have to listen to me, it’s your life. If you think you would have a hard time getting back in the boat by all means wear the neoprene. Life is dangerous... if people are looking for a perfectly safe pastime maybe ocean kayak fishing isn’t the best choice of activities. Waders aside, if you pass out for any reason in a kayak you are pretty much toast, the PFD just makes it so they can find your body. Then again, I’m statistically much more likely to be killed driving to the launch than by anything on the water. Just my opinion. Cheers thanks for watching!

Chris, I'm going to try launching my kayak at LJ this year. I have questions about the launch etiquette. When I drive there solo and drop off my kayak on the beach, is it safe to leave your gear with the kayak while you park your truck and walk back to the launch?
