My cold-weather preparation is a reservation at Holiday Inn express for a two queen size bed room. Preferably breakfast included. 😂😂😂

Ol trick I read about somewhere that helps regarding wearing shoes in a sleeping bag- put the boots you're wearing into a plastic or paper bag, then stick them into the sleeping bag- the rubber won't catch on the bag, and your feet will pop out stupid slick. Not to mention, it's a crummy plastic or paper bag- so it won't hinder movement. If you need to bust out quick, you don't have to worry about ripping the bag- it's a crappy plastic or paper.

A pack or two of hand warmers are a good item to plus up a sleep system if conditions end up colder than expected. One hand warmer placed near the feet in the bag makes a big difference.

The best poncho-poncho liner system is sold by Wilderness Innovation. I’ve slept well in it down to 24 degrees Fahrenheit. It is expensive.

Great information. I used almost the exact system a couple of nights ago. It is simple, fairly light, and durable, and makes sense. Thanks for sharing.

Two sandbags in your kit for pulling over your boots before going in the bag. You can wear them in an emergency or pull them off. Plus you got them for hide construction.

Pretty much mirrors my experience using this exact same system. If I know it’s going to be colder I’ll use the mss winter bag in place of the jungle bag. I’ve slept exactly like you demonstrated in the patrol bag and it’s chilly once it gets below freezing. The winter bag I’ve gone down to minus 10*c in skivvies and was cool but slept fine. Anything colder than that I take a Carinthia defence 4 and a klymit static V insulated inflatable as well as the bivvy and z-fold thermarest, with that combo I have slept down to -20*C in base layers , fleece sweat pants and sweater, beanie and socks and was warm as toast.

Same system I use when rucking as it's too large for an assault pack. Got mine on eBay for 90 bucks about 12 years ago in excellent condition. Love it

Something g to consider, if you put the rifle in the bag with you when it’s cold outside, when you take it out your glass will fog up and you won’t be able to aim properly, better to leave it outside for this reason.

I love my surplus sleep system. I got mine on eBay about 10 years ago for $60 because the black bag had a few cigarette burn marks on it that didn’t effect the functionality of it.

Video idea for you. Gear purchase order. Training aside, what order would you recommend the prepared citizen spends purchase items in. I have seen a void on RU-vid regarding this topic. For people starting the journey I think it could be immensely helpful. Love the channel, found you recently and I've been listening to your videos while I work. You and brass facts have the best content as far as I'm concerned. Keep it up! Best wishes to you and the family.

It's too heavy to integrate with any sleep system under 50 degrees F. It's also not nessesary if you already have a sleeping bag rated to 30 degrees.

Even though it's not the biggest threat a soldier will face, I always wonder how do military personnel deal with ticks or other insects from entering their sleep system?
@PreparedAirman

I coat mine sleep system and clothes with Sawyer permethrin spray. It has worked extremely well for me. To the point, guys around me had 8+ ticks on them throughout the day, and I had ZERO. No joke. Very impressed. amzn.to/4a17IAS

How does putting a rifle into a warmer climate and then pulling it out into cold *not* cause it to accumulate condensation and then freeze?

I carry 2 polyester sandbags in my ruck so if I have to sleep with my boots on and they're wet then I can slip those over my boots and not get my sleeping bag wet.

Why would you bother cutting a few sections off your sleeping mat when the most obvious weight upgrade would be a new sleeping bag or quilt? The MSS is very heavy, I've made a woobie/quilt out of nylon fabric and climashield apex insulation that is significantly warmer and lighter than the patrol bag, and with the quilt design doesn't even need to be zipped up. It weighs 25oz compared to the patrol bag's 40oz and packs smaller too.
@PreparedAirman
@PreparedAirman 3 месяца назад
Every little bit helps. Sure, you can get quilts that are 22oz rated to 20°F but they are $300-$500 (Enlightened equipment or Hyperlite mountain gear.) That's more then the price of the entire 4 piece MSS. I'm not at the point of spending that on an intermediate sleep system.

Which is hardest to handle, very cold rain around freezing point. Or 20 below freezing, when all the water is frozen and dry. Can you stuff a soaking wet bivy bag? How do you keep your inner bag dry when stuffing in cold, wet conditions?
@PreparedAirman
@PreparedAirman 9 месяцев назад
I personally would take cold over rain. Rain soaks everything, and it takes time to dry gear out. Cold is just cold. I attach wet items to the exterior of my pack via shock cord. Ultimately, how do you keep things dry in wet environments... you don't. Everything is going to get wet it's just a fact. Misery is almost guaranteed.

I may be a princess but after sleeping on the forest floor in the southern US in the summer many times, I would recommend a bug net, cut in half to wrap around the upper portion of your bag.
@JohnB-dr8sk
@JohnB-dr8sk 3 дня назад
BINGO- great tip. You can also drape a bug jacket over the top as well.
