Cole Hamels spent 10 years with the Philadelphia Phillies during his 15 year MLB career and on June 21, 2024, he officially retired as a Phillie. He was honored on Cole Hamels Retirement Night, where former teammates joined him to celebrate his career. Hamels was revered by Philadelphia fans and media members alike - the opposite of how he was treated during his time in the city. Throughout his Phillies career, Hamels was often criticized, blamed for the Phillies failures, and met with all-around disdain by many. Years later, Hamels is viewed in a positive light - the way he always should've been - but this episode of the 4 Aces series dives into his mistreatment. Cole Hamels was underrated and underappreciated during his time with the Phillies, something that is seemingly being corrected - a decade too late.

as a rangers fan i remember that trade when we got him from the phillies. we had darvish (who was hurt that season) as well so i thought we were going to do something special the next season with a nice rotation. we didnt…we lost in the alds but still it was nice to have him on the squad since he was a good pitcher for us.

Reminds me a lot of what Aaron Nola is going through with the Philly media. Two of the most under appreciated athletes the city has ever seen.

you could make a strong argument for that

great video, it really is amazing he went 8-14 with such a low ERA. I heavily watched during those years and this dude very VERY rarely got any run support, Could you imagine pitching thinking "Welp if I let up 2 good chance I'll get a loss". I almost want to look up what the lowest pitching ERA is with a losing record over a couple of years. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the support. Looks like Joe Magrane went 5-9 despite a 2.18 ERA in 1988. A huge turning point for how we evaluate pitching statistics is when Jake deGrom won the Cy Young in 2018 with a 1.70 ERA, despite just a 10-9 record.

Felix Hernandez paved the way for DeGrom by winning Cy Young with a 13-12 record in 2010.

I'm in my 30s so I was high-school/college aged during this time period. Hamels' legacy never seemed that complicated to me in Philly from what I remember. Yes, he stunk in 09 but he quickly turned it back around the following season and was a bonafide ace again and remained so for pretty much the rest of his Phillies tenure. Even when the team was bad there wasn't much debate among Philly fans over how good Hamels still was. It was the whole rest of the team that declined heavily due to age and that was pretty widely acknowledged. Cataldi is just a blowhard with a microphone who speaks for no one but himself. He was never a true representative of the pulse of Phillies fandom at any point in time. Hamels was only "the enemy" for that brief time in 2009. His reception at his recent ceremony wasn't really a surprise to me personally. That seemed more reflective of Hamels standing in this city than whatever manufactured BS the mouth breathers at WIP were still on about in the early/mid 2010s. Hamels is a celebrated and beloved player among fans and for the most part always was with the exception of 2009. That was the only time in his 10 seasons in Philly where he had a "complicated' standing with the fans.

We view it differently and that’s indicative of the media we consume. I grew up listening to WIP - still do - and despite their flaws I still enjoy it. To me, they are representative of the city, but that’s just my opinion. Appreciate your insights though, always open to hearing another point of view.

@@barreldelphiaI’m a Philly native myself, late 40’s now. I always had great love and respect for Hamels. I never saw him as the enemy, and still pulled for him when he was not a part of the team. He was a key reason I got to see a championship in my lifetime in Philly, before the Birds did it in ‘17. I know the Phils did it in ‘80 and the Sixers did it in ‘83, but I was 4 and then 7 years old at that time. I didn’t care about sports much back then. I can only speak for myself. Cole will always be good in my book.

@@barreldelphia I think to your point somewhat, since Cole was sort of a Hollywood "pretty boy", that made him not as resonant with fans as no nonsense guys like Halladay or Lee, or the team's current hard nosed star, Bryce Harper. Chase Utley also comes to mind. Still, the reception at that ceremony for Cole was no surprise to me. He was very good for a long time in our uniform and is one of only two WS MVP's in the franchise's history. It would take a lot to undo that kind of good will in our town lol.

You're right man. I'm in my early 30's and his legacy wasn't too complicated. He wasn't beloved but to be honest the only player from that group that is truly beloved from that team is Chase. Roy is now because of his untimely passing. II think the creator of this video was honest about his age and it kind of shows.

The guy deserves more recognition than he has now... I think part of it's that he bounced around with underperforming contenders and never really had a proper sendoff. The Phillies couldve used him last year even though he's 40 now and hadnt pitched a full year since 2018-19. Imo the notion that pitching wins were always the end-all be-all of name recognition and cy young voting is stupid... People will point to Rick Porcello's cy young like he didn't turn in quality run prevention in a hitters' park in a year where other pitchers weren't totally outclassing him. Im not saying all awards are fairly decided, or that i even trust or respect sports journalists and BBWAA voters... But people still generally understood that ERA, K/BB and WHIP, though simplistic, are better indicator stats than pitching wins. I went to a ton of phillies games during that rough stretch from 2012 onward, and i feel like the average fan had respect and awe for Hamels because he still put in the effort and got some results. The media didnt throw Chase Utley under the bus til he was a dodger, and everybody understood what was going on with Ryan Howard and Roy Halladay. Great video :)

At the end of the day, there's only two Phillies to win a World Series MVP and he's one of 'em. The other guy was pretty good from what I hear. When you're in that company, you're a franchise legend whether you like him or not.

Man if they win it against the Astros the Nola/Hamels comps are insane. Very similar pitching styles and are very much in that definitely top 25 not quite top 10 in the league.

Hate him. Nothing he did personally, but he started Gane 5 of the 08 WS. While Scott Kazmir had to basically split the plate, Cole Hamels consistently got the call two inches off the corner. kazmir got zero calls on the black whole game. Hamels just had to be in the area and he got every call. It was clear the MLB was really pushing in every way for Philly to wrap up that series. With Philly ahead, bthey woulda keep playing until completion. As soon as Tampa tied the game, the umpires called rain delay. They had to kill Tampas momentum despite hitting from a different strike zone all night. Philly probably still wins, but Game 5 was given to them. Sad, because you xan always say they didnt earn that title.

Then you have the opposite, Pat Burrell. A very average, unclutch player (outside of one game in the NLDS) who is a bust considering he was a 1st overall phenom. Yet, Burrell was loveeedddd by the philly media and fanbase.
