In this video titled, "What Happened to the Phillies?," I cover the ending of the Philadelphia Phillies disappointing 2024 season, how they got there, and where to go from here. For the third straight year, they failed to win the World Series, this time losing the NLDS to the New York Mets. The team’s championship window is seemingly closing, as their core players age without having secured a title. I go through their top players from a season ago, and how they've mostly declined.

Zach Wheeler said it best right after the London series: "not sure what it was, but something changed in the clubhouse". I have always been an opponent of MLB teams playing outside of North America, and we really seen a decline with our Phils, when they went to London. We were *fucking* absolutely dominating baseball before that series, and basically became a .500 team after that series. While I don't think we were going to play .680 ball all year long, something changed drastically from that series, and it did not go in our favor.

The hot start led to complacency: a feeling of quiet pleasure or security, often while unaware of some potential danger, defect, or the like; self-satisfaction or smug satisfaction with an existing situation, condition, etc.

I don’t think the Phils’ pen blew two leads in a single game all year. Then they imploded in the NLDS. Wild, I never would have suspected it.

Awful, awful ending to the season - this was THE chance. Next year, the Braves will have their studs back from the IL and the Mets will have Soto (and perhaps more). The divisional crown was a GIFT this year and they pissed it away.

@@gregoryfarshtey6856 It's funny that you think that. Soto isn't taking 95% of his money deferred. The Yankees are the competition. But between Judge and Cole, that's what, over $70 mil for 2 players. Judge is also an OF, their top prospect, Jasson Dominguez, is an OF, and if Spencer Jones was rated as a top 5 tool prospect last year, also an OF. Does it make sense to spend another 45+/ year on an OF when they have options, but have no 2B, no 3B, no 1B, and will need to retool the SP?

Your comments are brutally honest which is why I appreciate this post. As a Philly fan who was invested in all 162 games regular season, plus the post season few before their collapse, I am worried about their future. Rob Thomson is NOT to blame; all blame rests on the sluggers for swinging at balls outside of the strike zone. What happened to this team that actually made it to their goal of the NLDS? It is very disappointing.

But I will tell you this also especially in baseball what I think is starting to mean more than talent is team chemistry. If you look at the Texas Rangers last year or even the Arizona Diamondbacks there’s no way that those two teams were in the top five or six most talented but yet they both made it to the World Series And I look at the Mets right now and I just see a ton of chemistry. It’s like everyone is on the same page in the same chapter and in the same book and whether you like them or not, it’s awesome that comes together for any team, but obviously it’s better if it happens for your team, but I’m beginning to think that talent alone will not get you there.

That locker room is fractured. There was a turning point. Maybe the London Series. My theory is the Seranthony/Pache trade upset a lot of guys in the lockerroom. Not only are you trading away a key veteran loved by the team from the WS run, we're getting scraps in return. Just a terrible trade, terrible decision, none of the players liked it. Trading away a solid bullpen guy like that put doubts in the rest of the pen and considering we're talking about freaking JEFF HOFFMAN and MATT STRAHAM, I'm not surprised they went back down to Earth. This team SUCKS.

They peaked before the AS break and it's obvious that the Phillies are content with mediocre pieces and it's been this way since 2021. They've got a lot of work to do but I'm sure they'll find a way to go into the next season with another half ass team but maybe they'll realize that before the decade is over and before Bryce becomes an old man without the big trophy.

calling their season just a disappointment is an understatement. it was an embarrassing, gargantuan, monumental flailing of the arms let down. no crowd was more behind their team than phils fans. we had the stadium on the freakin richter scale all season. just for them to be this emotionless bottomless pit of misery at the end. thompson should have turned into the tazmanian devil choke slamming chairs and dugout equipment. instead, he was this passive weasel neutered of any type of masculine energy. he is a high school softball coach, doesnt belong in majors.

If you think this year was a complete failure for the Phillies I wonder what you think about the Chicago White Sox season. I’m not a Phillies fan but to sit here and say that the season was a complete failure. I can’t agree with that and trust me. I hate the Yankees more than anyone else and I do understand with the high payroll these days if you don’t win the World Series, yeah you fell short, but I wouldn’t say it’s a complete failure. The key to success, especially in baseball is to peak at the right time. Unfortunately no one seems to have the right formula for doing that sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn’t.

why not go after soto ? kinda short sighted comment. big money is coming off the books in the next year or two. casty has 2 years left and schwarber is up after this next season, as well as realmuto finishing up his contract. we can absolutely go after soto. let ownership sit in the luxury tax for a year maybe 2 at the most. soto is 26 years old. you bring him in now during his hall of fame prime years. he helps this roster not age so fast with harper and turner. with promising young talents like crawford and aiden miller, we can let bohm walk after next season and crawford fixes our centerfield position finally. both players are on the cheap for a while. we better go after soto. players like him don't grow on trees.
@barreldelphia
@barreldelphia 7 часов назад
I’d say signing a guy to a 14-year, $500M+ deal is shortsighted. By 2028 they’ll already have $80M tied up between Harper, Turner, & Nola who will all be 35 yrs old. I get what you’re saying but I don’t think it’s wise to continue to hand out decade plus long, couple hundred million dollar contracts
