It turned out this was totally my fault. I had the cleaning needle turned to the up position during the pre-heat process creating a blockage allowing pressure to build up inside the generator. Lessons learned the hard way. 😆 🤣 😂 Thanks for watching. God bless.
I appreciate this video because I have what I think to be a #237 fount and the original ventalater. A friend gave it to me, and I've been trying to find out all the information that I can to restore it.thats really to bad to see that generator pop like it did. Thanks again, good information 👍
The 237 and 236 are the same lantern but the 237 has the generator and fuel pickup tube for burning kerosene. Other than that they are identical. I was able to get a new generator from ocp for a reasonable price. Thanks for sharing and God bless.
I'll bet that spring would still work fine in two pieces. For the generator to pop like that I imagine the tip has to be clogged during pre-heat and then the pressure gets high enough to pop it.
Yes the spring would still work and the busted generator was all my fault. I left the tip cleaner in the up position and therefore closed off the tip of the generator allowing the pressure to build up. Thanks for watching and God.
Wow! Either the jet was still clogged and/or the needle was up. That took a tremendous amount of pressure. As the brass gets annealed every time it's lit, stress cracking shouldn't have been a factor. The 4 piece springs didn't cause it and should work just fine. The spring was just a coincidence.

@@colemanrestorationsrepair4171 It's all good, no worries. The only casualty was a mantle. I shot a few stove/lantern videos about 12 years ago under the name blmeflmm66 that are still up. My acct got hacked so i just abandoned it. I can tell you from experience that you make simple mistakes when you're recording yourself that you would never make in ordinary use. HAHA! But there is a teaching moment here. The good news is, folks get to at least learn from this. That fuel's gotta go somewhere when it gets hot. It will find a way to expand the easy way or the hard way. Haha! I just wish that part was recorded. I won't ask you to repeat that one, though. Keep up the great content and have a super weekend!
I just had a thought and went back and checked: At "20:50" you turned the cleaning tip to the "up" position. Did you ever turn it back down before/while the burner cup was burning? If up, could that have plugged the end and been an enabler of the blowout due to carb cleaner ignition?
No sir. That was my problem. I wasn't paying Attention and left it up. I didn't even realize I had turned it to the up position. Lessons learned. Thanks for the help.
I noticed in the two different videos where the generator blew or split open the handle for the pricker were both in the up position (pricker wire is closing the tip) which would creat pressure in the generator as if the pricker handle was down (open position)the pressure would exit the generator tip. Any feedback would be appreciated

I have a 237 just like yours I have had for a very long time. I just acquired a 236 from Canada. I am able to find NOS (expensive!) 237 Kerosine generators but am having less success finding NOS 236 generators (I always start at OldColemanParts). Is a 236 the same lantern as a 237 just less the preheat cup and retainer? If so, I am considering just putting a NOS 237 generator in my 236 and adding a preheat cup. There are Amish-made new preheat cups on epay that fit nicely. What are your thoughts on this? Thank you so much for showing us all how to try and keep our 237s burning with our original parts.
It is my understanding the 236 and 237 are the same lantern fount and burner frame. I would assume the generator and fuel pickup tube would be different. Been reading on converting a 220 to kerosene. You have to use the tip of a 201 generator and remove the cardboard packing from the generator but I'm no expert on this. I haven't seen anyone converting the 236 but I'm sure it has probably be done and probably has been. You could probably get on the Facebook group and find someone with more experience than me who could help you better. Great bunch of guys you just have to ask. Lots of knowledge in this group. NOS 236 generator's are indeed veryyy rare as they contain asbestos however every now and then one turns up on Ebay. I purchased one a few weeks back for backup sake, wasn't cheap but least I have it in case I ever need it. There are new one's being made now as well although the word is they don't perform all that well for the most part.
