Accompanied by pianist Leo de la Fuente, Coleman Hawkins announces and plays "I Wish That I Were Twins". Filmed at Pulchri Studio, Lange Voorhout, The Hague, Netherlands, this is from my own 16 mm copy which I had made from a 35 mm original which I discovered in an abandoned film archive in The Hague.

Great document. I have a photo of Coleman Hawkins 🎷in Holland with Freddy Johnson (piano) and Maurice van Kleef 🥁(drums), signed in Amsterdam by the 3 musicians (sent on February 19, 1939).

I read that the pianist, Leo de la Fuente, died in Auschwitz nine years later, in 1944. Frightening.

It's that sweet, metalic sound that keeps me coming back every day to listen. Just to think in four years he would cut 'Body and Soul.' Beautiful video, thank you.

This must be a great rarity-thanks for the posting. Hawkins seems very relaxed and happy doing his spoken intro-perhaps it was after lunch!

Mr. Hawkins played with all the big names these days in Holland. E.G. Kid Dynamite and my grand dad Arthur Pay. Thanks very much for posting this!

What a great thing this is! The Bean! I can hear his tremendous power and projection, also his invention- a couple of those phrases are as ‘advanced’ as anything the kiddies play now, and he invented them! Also great to hear his voice and suave manner announcing.

Bean was at his best here, in terms of his command of the saxophone.

This is amazing! A short performance film of the father of the modern saxophone Coleman Hawkins in Holland two years before the landmark recording of Body and Soul - those Buddy Bolden cylinders might turn up yet! Going to have to check out some of your other clips, thanks! ... N

I don't think there's any doubt that jazz was being played in black communities for many years before the ODJB was recorded - Freddie Keppard was asked to record earlier but declined saying that he didn't want others to "steal his stuff". Earlier documentation (if not recordings) are certainly around!

Amazing historical footage. Thanks for preserving and uploading this. Hawk's inherent talent easily overcame the shortcomings of the pianist.

What shortcomings Peter? He has good time, good feeling, plays the harmonies correctly, and lets Coleman play.

Pianist Leo De La Fuente was arrested and deported by the Nazi's in Holland in 1944 and murdered at Auschwitz Destruction Camp on 30th April of that year.

How was he murdered?
@rivkacamposhenriquezdelafu6759
@@acohen1980 I was told that he had to witness his family gassed to death as the Nazis forced him to play piano for them.
