Colgate Comedy Hour: Louis Prima, Keely Smith, Sam Butera and the Witnesses (26 June 1955)

This rare footage is the first national television appearance of Louis, Keely, and Sam. There are some differences from their later stage act-Keely isn't completely bored by Louis yet-but the foundation is there, and it's great!

A big thankyou for this, Alan! I was performing during those years, and I know how much the jazz minded musicians of the day liked these guys, especially Sam.

@@Tommy09a I grew up in the farm country outside Lake Stevens, Washington, but in the early 70s I lived in Gresham and Beaverton long enough to realize how much I liked Portlanders. It was different from Seattle. Tell me, what's the nigh scene like in Seattle now? Are there any groups that play music and do comedy? That was standard fare when I working there and in Portland. We worked out of the Belmont agency in Seattle, and Jack Belmont had a portfolio of his groups that he showed us one time. Most of the pictures had some kind off humor in them, like the drummer wearing his ride cymbal on his head and hitting it with his drumstick kind of thing to let the club owners know these guys can entertain! "I was out on my uncle's ranch. He has 5000 head...no bodies, just heads!" or how 'bout: "The food here at the Colony Club is fit for a king....Here King!" :-)

Cancel Culture of today would be ruthlessly criticizing these musicians for supposedly appropriating African-American music and culture with their singing, instrument playing and showmanship. A bunch of nonsense. American music is an almagamation of a litany of musical traditions dating back to the founding of America and before as well the Native Americans and all the other people to have come to call America their homeland...whether it be African Americans or Latinos or the people of the Appalachian Mountains. This unique tapestry of people and their musical traditions have contributed to forge our American identity....an identity that music and other traditions has helped forge into our American culture.
