I met Colin at a boxing event in Cardiff a few years ago, what an honour that was. As a teenager he gave me many hours of excitement, what a banger he was.
Spent many hours in the gym as a young boxer watching Colin train. He was a work horse and brilliant technical fighter. To top it off hes was a genuinely nice guy.
Outboxed, even outclassed in both fights, Jones found the equalizer with his tremendous punching power in the ninth in both fights. Great fights both; thanks for uploading.
Kirk passed away in June 2021 aged 66. Nary a mention generally speaking. Especially online. Kirk scored the most significantvictory by a British fighter overseas in beating Roberto Duran. RIP Kirk
You'll hear the Yanks and the Deigo's all day long defending Duran but Laing beat him UP.!!! I still have a damaged Larynx from that night through screaming ..KEEP YOUR FUCKIN' GUARD UP KIRK.
Searching through the boxing on youtube and come across an old favourite of mine, Jonesy. I always looked forward to watching him fight, as he was such a value for money fighter and one tough sod.
Kirkland was a naturally gifted fighter. It’s like he wasn’t taught- he had a style all of his own. I remember marvelling at him in the 1980’s when I was a youngster. I never forgot him and often wondered what happened to him. R.I.P.
Laing is fighting very upright with his feet close together and it's hard to imagine that he beat Duran... but he certainly did. Jones was a real determined tough nut who could bang.
Every time I watch this I can't stop laughing, partly because Laing looks so in control and I know what's coming, partly the commentators curse (it's almost Mohammed Ali exhibition stuff), I'll say one thing Colin Jones knew how to finish.
pam Colin Jones was incredible his punching power reminded me a bit of Julian Jackson, however to say Laing never troubled him was/ is a fallacy. Like old harry said in round 8 ‘jones is all over the place’. Jones himself later said that his camp never expected Laing to give him so much trouble.
I understand why Jones reacted to the first low blow the way he did but the 2nd low blow clearly hit him on the side of his thigh but Jones reacted like it hit him square in the gonads. The only reason to do that was to either get Laing disqualified or to make sure Laing would get a severe warning and be too cautious to go for the body shots that were obviously causing Jones a lot of problems. Both great fights and there’s no denying Laings skill and there’s no denying that Jones had a heck of wallop on him 🥊
Im not sure that Laing was "completely outboxing" Jones , yes he was ahead both times but Jones was getting to him and always dangerous. Two classic British title fights.
Kirkland beat Duran and will always be rightly remembered for that could and should have pushed on but drugs and a bad crowd around him put paid to that .
When you can punch like Colin Jones you just never know whats going to happen ...Kirkland was a good boxer but jones kept up the pressure and bang its good night
@@georgem2371 Very unlucky not to be a world champion as well - the split decisions in either of his fights against Milton McCrory could easily have gone his way.
