Yes i looked at this transit and trafic in lwb and you pay a lot of money for an empty box and questionable reliability. Are there any new vehicles that can make even 50.000 miles with no fuck ups and costing the business lost trade.
No it's not worth 50K but until people stop buying them and stock builds up they will get away with it. I paid in 2020 16.5K + VAT for a brand new one with air con etc. No way is this van 2.5 times better.
Yeah they had a lawsuit in the US and then these conmen finally admitted the design was a joke (designed to fail) and started recalling them in the UK too. CarUK on jootube has a video on it.
Its a wheeled box. A utility van requires a simple economic reliable easy-to service engine. Rugged gearbox, a speedometer and windscreen wipers. Same philosophy as the Toyota Hilux pickup. £10,000 max. It should be cheap to run, cheap to service and last thirty years. It doesn’t need £40,000 of bollocks like five microprocessors in each door when a window winder does it better for £5 and gives the driver some much-needed exercise.
They should be, but if they made vans cheap reliable and easy to repair then they'd make no money. Everything nowadays is sadly made to last its warranty term and then get replaced by the new and shiny version...
The guy in the vid doesn't need any exercise winding windows, he's pretty hench, and his arms are already over animated...what he does need is his head testing for paying £50k on a Transit. He obviously has enough money to not give a toss. Mind you, the old one looked in fair condition, so someone is gonna get a deal on a second hand one.
Not worth that high price , it is a van and it carries things. No need for the electronic which might work when new but a nightmare when it goes wrong. Vans should be simpler, nice but simple.
@@chappy2121 yes it’s almost like they are trying to stop people earning an honest living unless that person is prepared to take out a massive loan to buy a new “compliant” vehicle…..☹️
He must have the air suspension and gold bloody wiring for that price 😅 I've seen then just over 40. To be fair of you get all the tech from cars you mind so much but if they are just bog standard it takes the piss a bit
Clearly, the Transit has become the van for the well established working Man/Woman. A new start-up company/self employed worker couldn't possibly afford these. I have driven Transits from 1988 to 2014 and after the factory was moved from Southampton to Turkey, I noticed a reduction in quality and reliability. Good video.
This is completely nuts, how can an intelligent person spend this much on a van. I know people spend more than £100k on VW vans. The profits on vans must be immense. My business runs 3 nissan vans that are 9 and 10 years old and have owned them for about 5 years and will run the into the ground which will be about another 10 years as they as bullet proof so far. All 3 van cost me a lot less than 50k.
Hi Simon - I have the same van (Frod Transit Custom, Limited in Magnetic grey) but I have the 2.0l manual. If you go through the display settings using the buttons on the multifunction steering wheel you can add a linear rev counter on the right hand side of the digital dashboard. I also changed my speedo to a round one with a digital read out so it's very customisable. BTW I paid a fraction UNDER £40k all in for mine. Amazingly I bought it through Costco Auto's! Have to say that so far I'm loving mine, great van! As for the handbrake, it takes some getting used to but if you take off your seatbelt with the brake pressed then turn off the engine it will auto apply the parking brake and then when you get in it to drive off it will auto release.
Other thing to watch out for is if you’ve had the old version the back doors don’t have the stops that prevent them from swinging to the full 180 position, if wind catches the door and parked the door can fully swing into the road 🫣😭
Honestly quite like the new Transit Custom but I wouldn't have one - already seen 3 done over in Sussex as Ford haven't upgraded the security at all. Almost £50k for the Transit just means the Transporter will be near to 60k for the same spec - usually buy Transporters but now they're in partnership with Ford the customisation that's been consistent from the T5 through to the T6.1 is gone so they will likely be less sought after for conversions after they're done with work vehicles. There was never really the aftermarket seen with the Transit so it felt they were priced appropriately but definitely don't think it's worth 50k.
Wouldn’t pay £50k for a Transporter (older one) I had a top of the T5 new in 2015 that was £28k are the newer ones worth £20k more absolutely not. Hope you enjoy it, nice van just don’t see value for money.
@jonathanbond915 what's ridiculous is i know a lad that just paid 22500 for a 15 plate 2l with 130000 miles on it! I wouldn't pay that for a new transporter, the world's gone mad!
I don't really mind a squircle steering wheel. I do value my physical buttons for the ventilation and heater controls. I often have glue or dirt on my fingers at the end of the day.
If that van is worth £50k the amount of value it has to bring to a business is enormous. I would expect a VW/MAN Lwb High roof for that money. I presume it bings and bongs at every opportunity too. To be a brutal, I don't like the styling insode or out so I will stick with both of my Ford Transit T350 LWB vans of 2011 and 2012 vintage. I have driven a 2019 Vauxhall Movano Lwb when I did some work on it for a customer and I quite liked it. The Movano/Master has a fully galvanized body so won't rust for a considerable time.
Regarding keyless keys might be good to get a Faraday pouch. Make it part of your work belt, l know you may work within sight of your van. But we can all let our guard down loo trip, thieves relay your key signal and a quick drive off.
Good idea to change the old van at 55k miles as the wet cambelt has been known to break at 70 k miles. Because of this I would never consider this van .Is it worth £50 k -no its an outrageous price for a van.
I LOVE the column shifter! I mean I’d prefer it was a manual one rather than an electronic one, but I’m glad more companies are putting them on the column like they used to. Frees up space for the centre. Maybe cars could put them on the column and have a middle front seat
So my conclusion is modern vans are good , if you are in the position to change it before the warranty runs out . I have met one owner with one of these and its already been back to ford , and off the road for 6 weeks ... and he also handed back the previous model before the warranty ran out ... this is a bullet that is going to be hard too escape... ps ... the ford specialist that I use is now looking for bigger workshop , to fix em post warranty. Go figure.
12:21 tachometer is what it is called under the settings menu, and it is a digital bar that sits to the right of all the dials/info displayed, that goes as the revs increase, It also changes colour depending on if the drive mode is selected in either eco or sport for example. Along with having the option to see a roundel system speedometer/together displayed with a digital readout.
Hi Simon, in the same boat as you. Just had mine about a month now. To get the hand break to release automatically when you pull away you have to have your seatbelt on.
There’s been a few recalls on these already, including mine, steering sensor module, (incorrect software loaded in factory) and false alarm activation, (because of high and low speed communication from the ECU) simple software. Updates. There will be more. So when yours is in, get them to check it. As there is a fault there!
50k for a vehicle which will take the van thieves about 5 mins or less to get into. Probably one of the easiest vans to break into. For 50k I'd want steel cage doors on back and sluding doors and reinforced roof. Deadlock doors with keys are the best way to prevent . Technology can be hacked and that 50k van will be gone off the drive. The gear lever on the side is much like the old mitsubishi variants & as for the handbrake switch. You cant beat thetraditional hand brake which as we all know if we're fully loaded and up on an incline we pull it up even more & leave the van in gear . I always leave my van in gear when not in use and the wheel fully turned to lock . So if someone does break in tbey cant roll it away unless of course they start the van!!! All tbe technology he has on tbag truck he spent 50k on and hasnt a clue what it does . But it will all be connected like thr EV to the internet which means they can still shut your vehicle down whenever they want.
Thanks for the clear and honest review. Just wondering, since yo\ur old van was only three years old, if I am not mistaken. Why did you want to replace it?
The steering wheel is nice to use but yes I would like the Electric Parking Brake to engage automatically when I turn off the engine. The Sat Nav doesn't work in parts of the country or dies after a couple of hours of use and there is already a recall for those door hinges to be replaced.
You'll get used to the gear selector real quick. I've had it on a few Mercs and honestly it's great once you're familiar with it. Clears so much space in the middle of the cab!
He didn't spend 50000 k ,on a lease a couple of grand down and around 400 a month and can claim the VAT back and offset everything against tax, one of the few perks of being self employed .
night time lighting inside and out is something almost all van truck and car reviews never bother with, its a shame cause we are in them at night plently of the time specaily trucks
With the recent “home delivery” culture that has sprung up in the U.K. over the last five years, vans are in higher demand and subsequently values have increased in line with that..
I think the van is really top-spec. Something I would love to have one day, but could I justify 50k, I don't think so. Great video Simon! I can see you reviewing more cars
I had one as a loan in the same spec. It was really nice except the speed limit recognition. The bongs from the alerts drive me mad! You have to turn off alerts every time you start. So annoying.
It’s about the cost of ownership not the purchase price for businesses. Keep to the service schedule and they will last for many years. People who complain about timing belts take notice. These vans are totally different to what was built even 10 years ago, more like a car. They are more lifestyle vehicles today.
13:37 also there is a setting that flashes up as a green light on the dash/screen behind the steering square wheel with a hand symbol, it’s useful when at lights, no need to put the hand brake on, when temporary stopped as I said that the lights!
I’ve got the same auto van as yours. Love it. You are wrong about a few things. The rev meter is on the right hand side of the screen and the hand break is fully automatic. Great vid. You just have to get used to it. Also down load the ford pro app you will love it as you can even remote start the van with the app. Worth the 50K
Yes, there is a rev counter. You need to enable it and will appear on the right or left side of the dash, depends how you configure it. I have a new generation 2023 Wildtrack Ranger, with the same infotainments system. I’d be interested to know if you experience apple car play connection issues. Phone connects fine but no sound. Disconnect/ reconnect and all if fine again.
I purchased my 2014 custom limited LWB for £21k inc vat brand new - 157k miles engine blew - New engine and some other parts £6500 friend of mine - I would never pay 50k for the new transit but I do like it, very sleek indeed - likes: loading more space - rear doors no yellow thingy to keep doors open - mercedes shifters - keyless go all positive likes - not much to dislike its just a work horse - but not as good as the old transits that run and run forever (simple and good review Simon)
You will get use to that gear lever. It’s the same as the Mercedes Auto. It’s convenient. Some cars when you put your safely belt on the hand brake release itself.
Great Video, I currently own a 2017 T6 which i would like to change but the price has exploded. The reason i mentin this is i believe VW & Ford are producing the same van as do other manufacturers. Nissan, renault, vauxhall, citroen. £50K is a lot of money for me and a bit too much but time will tell. Also have they got rid of the wet belt system that seems to have plagued them.
@Mr04051964 0 seconds ago I have the brand new custom170ps L2 Limited, price with a few extras including vat was £44k, the independent suspension is a deal breaker, so much smoother over bumps I thought I would mention that the limited van I’ve been waiting for for a year, and I picked up in March, does pull away without the need to manually release the electronic handbrake, try it again and you will be happy. Not sure why it didn’t work for you.
the steering wheel can tilt up to rest flat, on the inner side of the drivers seat there is a tray that goes on top of the steering wheel, then it can be a laptop stand or tray for food.
Nice video! I currently as I watch this video, have sat outside on hire, is a limited spec , same van , but white and in manual. So typically my daily is a bigger transit (not custom) 350t, 71 plate auto (6speed). This van is mint, parking sensors all around and down the sides too! Ideal for going round tight corners!, anyway back to the brand new custom, yes it is temporary, a courtesy van. So what do I think? It is manual, so I now I know why they have stuck all the controls for the wipers on The left stalk with the indicators, already turning wipers on accidentally when indicating!. The other side is of course where the auto stalk selector is, wow that looks weak!?, I do prefer and agree the centre traditional selector it better !, but this is a joint venture with the new vw transporter, maybe shared input went into layout of controls. So much customisation for the electronics , is all controlled thru the main large screen, hidden within menus. So so so many settings! An overload of tech! Time will allow for more discoveries, like double glove box, lights in step well, Jack in the rear, by the door. And oddly no hooks to hang your coat up behind /between drive seat and passenger seats! (Have you got the tilt steering wheel? ) well, is it worth this kinda of dosh, No, but if I am not the business owner, the employee, who cares, employers should care about their employees and spoil where possible and get the best! Haha! I guess higher end of the spectrum/or nearer to this 50k should be the crew cab territory, extra seats, get the fam in, if you are after a hi end , large vehicle, it’s the ultimate set up for any family. As a straight forward van, much lower price should be the norm, as vans are priced high right now, I reckon with electric coming along, in years to come, of owner ship and out right owning the vehicle, the van might be worth a lot less, than they are now at second hand prices, just cause diesel will probably be cancelled out. This is just my speculation. Also if you are leasing, at work we have several transits, on experience, two years max, so many problems have popped up, mainly the troubled wet belt! Yes it snapped, 17k to replace On one and a NoX sensor on another! Time spent at Ford , is down time and never that slick, days become weeks!
I opted to get the last of the previous version, exactly the same as my other van but £18K less expensive. ford need to get a grip with the engines if they were going to develop a new van why not redesign a new engine to go with it, why stick with the WET belt from previous models? Security needs to be addressed too. These vans a far to easy to break into.
Not a fan of the shape. But it may grow on me. I have a 2013 custom limited and I love it. And it has the 2.2l engine which is notoriously better than the 2.0l wetbelt! Would never spend 50k on a van. I won't be changing mine until it dies completely.. if it ever does
You say it feels bigger in the back…. My first impression just looking at the old and new one is that the new one looks smaller cos it looks like the roof is a lot lower??
@Mr04051964 0 seconds ago It is lower to fit under a 2m underground car park. The front axle has also been moved forward by 200mm for less intrusion in the footwell and for more stability.
Excellent and interesting vlog Simon , strange question for you in regards to tax, I’m now a sole trader for past 2 years myself and have a transit connect, when I purchase a new one am I able to book the whole price against tax or just a small percentage as I’m completely new to this and my accountant has sent me a gov website of how it works but it’s a bit of a minefield for me many thanks and regards Mark 😀👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
Great question. It depends how your accountant does things. He/she should be able to offer the best advice for you and your business and should also, in my opinion, be able to take the complicated info off the gov website and give it back to you in a palatable fashion!
@@simonbowler1 thank you ever so much Simon for your sound advice, I have an accountant as I’m just not confident enough to do my own returns every year and because I want to do everything above board take care and thanks 🙏 again 😃👍
Good video! I'm in desperate need to replace my current Transit, but really don't know if I can justify the cost of a new one. Nor can I really justify the cost of a used one as they don't seem to depreciate that much anymore. Been very close to putting an order in for one almost exactly the same spec as yours but the price keeps putting me off. I believe there is an option somewhere to display a rev counter on the instrument panel, it displays as a vertical bar on the right side of the screen. Just before the unpleasant times hit us in 2020 I had an order in for a new Custom, Sport spec, L2, nearly all options ticked and it came to just under £30k. Unfortunately I had to cancel it a couple of months later as everything was shut down, I was buying a new house to renovate and I decided the money was best put towards the house. Couple of years later I specced up the same van although with only a couple of options and it came to just under £50k so that was an instant no go! Just unfortunate that I always planned on moving my current van on, a late Mk7 Transit, back at the end of 2020. As a result, nearly 4 years further on it's starting to look very tatty and needing lots spending on it.
The auto gearbox control on the stork is brilliant just pull up and press the end button and your are straight in park mode with auto handbrake To pull off just put it in drive and press the peddle it also removes the handbrake Easy for us lazy van drivers
