Collecting watches: Only 15 brands hold their value

Fine handcrafted mechanical watches, made by Swiss craftsmen whose trade goes back centuries, hold a special place in the hearts of the rich and famous. In this age of disposable electronic devices, that rapidly become obsolete, it is easy to understand why a timeless mechanical watch holds so much appeal.
In this video we speak to South Africa’s wristwatch authority, Peter Machlup, about which watches hold their value and why he has been consumed with a lifelong passion for collecting and trading fine watches.

If you're buying watches for it's value and profit, then you're here for the wrong reason. I buy watches to never sell them, give away at best, so I don't care if I lose 'em or break, as long as I enjoy 'em.

I could not agree more! 55 year watch enthusiast. I found my watches over the course of decades, and they are cherished possessions. I do not sell watches and I do not care about the supposed "value" that others may ascribe to them. These are for my lifetime.

I needed something to do in my old age and just by chance I was walking past an antique jewelers and one watch caught my eye a1950 Rolex men's dress watch. I knew I had to have it and that's how I got into watches. My next few purchases we're made on the basis of how appealing they we're to me and not if they were a good investment or not. My next purchase will be a Seiko because it looks fantastic in an understated way.

I love how me said "only 15 brands" but then couldn't even name them. Oh, and then he couldn't even tell us how old Audemars was. "100 years... 120 years"... Well, which is it? What was the purpose of this video? To show off your expensive watch collection? That makes you a douche... not a watch enthusiast. LOTS of watches hold value... because "value" is the relation between the new cost vs. the used cost. It doesn't take a VC, an AP, or a Patek to do that. Seiko, Citizen, Tissot, are 3 inexpensive brands that hold their "value" very well, look great, run forever, and offer timeless classics, and don't require a separate insurance policy to own them. I hate watch snobs. Particularly those that have no idea what they are talking about.

Seriously though. I collect watches for two reasons, and their resale value is not one them. First, I simply like the look and appreciate the robustness of the watch, Seiko comes to mind in this area. Two, I can have a fine timepiece and not do an Archie Luxury and lose my shirt over the purchase. Now, that being said, if anyone were to gift me a Rolex, Patek, etc, I certainly would not turn it down!

+Leoooonard - Depends on what you are willing to spend your hard earned $$ for. In 2005 I bought a Martin D35 for $3600.00 and haven't looked back. That's another great investment that holds its value. But if I were to go for a Rolex, where's a good place to shop?
@dvamateur

***** Isn't that kind of not hygienic to buy a used watch? I mean, someone has worn it on a their skin for years and you want to put it it on? Do you buy used underwear due to budget constraints, too?
@dvamateur
@dvamateur 8 лет назад
***** Here we go, stepped on a turd again. Common situation when talking to a Rolex proponent. You don't get this kind of of idiotism from say a Vacheron Constantin owner. One can indeed tell a lot about the person from the watch he is wearing.
@dvamateur
@dvamateur 8 лет назад
When you buy a "brand new" guitar, they immediately suggest you change the strings, because people had tried it before from the display. It's a hygienic precaution. I never actually done that. I changed the strings when there was time to change. But a used watch? That's against the skin all the time. Also, why use word "pre-owned" for a used item? Pretentiousness and stupidity shines right through there. Nah, if you were a Seiko wearer, you'd have different attitude. You're a Rolex aspirer. I am not really sure what people see in Rolex watches. Their divers are as cliched as iPhone, as far as aethetics are concerned. I think people going for Rolex or Apple products lack individuality. They haven't developed their own taste. It's the taste they got from commercials, nowhere else. It's actually sad, but it's not my problem.
@yoursisterspanties
@yoursisterspanties 7 лет назад
Even Patek's or Audeumars Piguet don't hold their value unless you buy a very rare piece which would be ridiculously expensive. You don't buy a watch like that for their resale value

I restore antique Hamilton, Bulova, Elgin and a few others at that level. I usually make around 220 to 300 hundred. I'm not getting rich but more like making money off a hobby I love. Once I looked up what a Bulova cost in 1937 then got a time conversion chart and they were worth back then about what I'm charging now!

If one is collecting watches simply to have models that hold their value, one isn't a watch collector. Might as well just buy gold and keep it in the bank. Less maintenance costs and easier to sell. Watches like precious metals can also fluctuate in value. Other non Swiss brands can also gain in value, certain Grand Seiko models for example and even at the lower end, some increase. For example the SKX diver watch from Seiko is just a $250 to $400 watch depending on the model, increased in value as soon as Seiko discontinued it. Anyway, if it's all about the money for some, they don't have the soul of a genuine watch collector.
@kingofenglandthethir
@kingofenglandthethir 6 месяцев назад
Right on mate. I'm tired to death of the slick collectors talking about resale value as though that was the core meaning and value in collecting watches. Some of us like and sometimes love watches or a watch. I'm interested in the craft the quality of the produce and try to own a watch that matches my desires. Often a desired watch costs more than I can justifiably afford but I do not ignore it because of this. Cheers =o=

Both of these have the potential for home run appreciation. Ie. Lots of limited runs and a ever growing base of collectors. I have an omega that my father bought in 1971 for $700 . It is now worth over 10k. It's a big triangle seamaster in great shape. Now the odds are in. There is a Grand seiko out there now that in twenty years will be worth big bucks. This is part of what makes collecting fun fun me. It's the ones that get away. Like the limited runs on rolex dials. I have a feeling in the not so distant future the tropical dial by rolex will be big money. I can not afford to buy as many as I want. The gold pie pan I could afford and will always be able to sell or trade at the price I paid for it. How many hobbies afford you that.

@@ducatikawasaki1290 It’s not confusing at all. The reality is that there are probably billions of watches to chose from, new, old, vintage whatever they might be. Of all these there are also millions that WILL retain their value, so why not chose from the watches that retain their value? Fair enough if you are so rich that money mean nothing to you I can understand that you ONLY will chose out of passion and interest. 99% of people that say that the resale value does not matter at all are lying, simple as that, but of course, you might be in the 1% category but I doubt it.

@@ducatikawasaki1290 “Not designed for them”, well I don’t think this kind of mindset was or is in the picture when a watch is designed. Don’t really get this way of thinking anyway. The fact is that most western people that has a normal job can, if that’s what they prioritise, buy a luxury watch. But most people that actually can buy an expensive watch will never do it, because they are not interested and chose to spend the money on other things.
@truxton1000

@Lee Well we are all different. I own at the moment over 50 watches, big and small, including pocket watches etc. So I rarely lose any money when I sell, sometimes I make a 50% profit., other times I just break even, and in maybe 10% of the sales I lose money. But overall I like to make a profit, it's part of what I enjoy. But I understand your approach too, each to their own. On Sunday I am going to a watch fair, I have a table and will put on the table around 30 watches so we'll see how that goes.

i always expect the watches i purchase to lose much of their value immediately. over time, there are surprises though. in 1999, i bought a dubey & schaldenbrand for $2200. this watch has recovered value and there are current listings at over this price. my tag sel that i purchased in the mid 90's had dropped financial value considerably. but i would never sell it. this was my first "watch". for me, it is about the affect the watch has on me and whether i am willing to spend the money to own the watch. after that, i really don't care too much what happens to the financial value.

It tells time simultaneously in Monte Carlo, Beverly Hills, London, Paris, Rome, and Gstaad! In today's collector market value, it is now worth over $40,000 U.S. dollars. Buy what you like people, what you will enjoy wearing and make you happy. Forget about resale value. If you're considering a purchase and the first thought in your head is: "Will I make my money back and/or at least break even when I sell?" Then the truth is you cannot afford to buy that watch. Don't be afraid to go to the lower tier. There are some great brands with fantastic horology chops, e.g. Longines, Oris, G.Seiko, which is affordable and more importantly just great watches.

Hey, I may be an amateur here but I buy watches simply because they appeal to me and not because I expect them to increase in value. I have several I bought at Walmart for $13 that I absolutely love. When they die, if the battery change doesn't bring them back to life, in the garbage they go. In the meantime, they give me great pleasure to wear. Of the many watches I own, none have cost more than $300. And I sure wouldn't waste money on fashion watches that are 10% watch and 90% marketing.

Sure, you can easily get 30% off a Breitling by purchasing one on the grey market. In addition, most authorized dealers will gladly sell you a Breitling at a few points above gray market. The only places not willing to negotiate down to grey market prices are the stores inside malls and other shopping center type places. I disagree with JLC holding its value. I bought a Master Ultra Thin Perpetual Calendar in 2019 for about 19K (all in, including tax, minus discount) I sold it this year in 2022 for about 9K. Currently, per JLC’s website, the MSRP on it is 25K. Unless just that particular model dropped like a rock and others hold their values.

I don’t agree. Only Rolex retain value in most of their lines. Then, some Omega’s, fantastic brand, some Patek’s, some Audemars Piguet. Only some other iconic watches from other brands retain value. Could be a JLC, G Shock or Seiko. That’s the real answer.

There are some brands of watch that are incredibly good but have never established a 'brand name' for themselves. Good examples are Daniel Roth and Vianney Halter. Daniel Roth is generally considered the best watchmaker in the world, yet nobody has heard of him... the split-seconds hand on his watches runs at 1/10th of a second intervals, whereas most brands (Rolex, Breitling, etc) have a sweep-seconds hand of 1/5th. Vianney Halter makes truly artistic pieces... look at his oblong 'Trio' watch... it's beautiful!

Well it's somewhat correct that only 15 brands "hold their value", but what are we talking about, buying a new wath and then expect it to hold value? Well in that case is much less than 15, and not really correct to say that either as some Patek and some Rolex actually lose quit a bit of value when you buy then new at retail. What we can say is that some watches from some brands hold their value. But when we talk vintage the picture is completely different, as if when you buy a vintage watch of good quality at the coreect price nearly ALL hold their value. For example any of the very uknown brands that has a good quality movement, for example the many brands that used Valjoux, Venus and even Landeron movements. The bottom line is that you need knowledge and experience to be able to navigate in this jungle..

I know that this is being said but its not true, unless you have some limited edition. the market is a bit 'flooded' with pre-owned Rolexes and unless your model is not in production yet, you wont get more money for it. I just checked one store (watchfinder). 740 Rolexes at the moment. I went through about 20 (Submariner, Explorer, Date-just, Daytona...) and they are all cheaper than new ones - cheaper in the store. those who sold them got much less, of course.

Whilst Patek Philippe might not discount watches sold directly, their dealers apply discount even before you ask. As far as Patek Philippe watches holding their prices well? It is a myth. Have a look at Watchfinder, Watchclub, Watchcenter and other second hand watch reseller. In fact, as Patek is not vertically integrated outfit ... and they buy parts from various suppliers (ETA included) and then modify and re-work them (to different tolerances). You need to factor in the ridiculous cost of Patek Philippe Service, when buying second hand. Purely because no one else will be able to service the watch.

sekonda doesnt grow in value, although some might in a long period of time when they are vintage. Seiko, most of them will. there are huge numbers of huge fans of seiko and although seiko makes millions of watches, they might actually grow in value when discontinued just because of their popularity. If you asked for Pulsar, then pulsar made the first digital watch (P1, a James Bond watch) and now they sell for about 17 thousand dollars. Generally, cheap watches dont grow in value because they are not collectable - they are affordable, there are loads of them and they are not collectable for their quality as such.
@Vot63
@Vot63 7 лет назад
If your Sekonda is a rebranded Poljot it will hold its value, but its value is not high to begin with; Poljots are horologically excellent though. Mid range and Grand Seikos hold their value as well as Rolex or Omega. Junghans astro quartz have held their value, and deservedly so. When this dick says only 15 brands hold their value, he means only 15 luxury brands. There really are only 15 true luxury brands; way to go Einstein.

A Rolex doesn't hold value like they used to. They make millions of them each year. Don't get me wrong, a solid gold or vintage Daytona is going to appreciate, but low end Rolex won't really. The good thing about rolexes is that you can sell them quick because there's lots of people that want one. For me, it's Vacheron Constantine, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet or Piaget. But if I like the watch, like a IWC Portuguese, it's a classic and might not appreciate, but won't lose too much value either. Right now I want a Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre 02 because I've always wanted a real Swiss made tourbillion, and now you can get it for under $15k!!

@dusanveselka3240
@dusanveselka3240 8 лет назад
I agree that this is what is being said - Its not about the quality, its about the fame. On the other hand, though, if you want to sell your watch anywhere in the world and you deal with a proper dealer (not talking about a camp in Nigeria), you will always get a better value for Patek - because they are limited, the waiting time is ridiculous and they are highly collectable. You wont lose money on Patek, but if you want money quick for your one-year-old Rolex, you might get 80, maybe 90 percent of its original value. Just chect WatchFinder fir example and you will see that second-hand Rolexes are cheaper than brand new.
@EVILSPAWN1003
@EVILSPAWN1003 8 лет назад
Ofcourse it`s the fame. My train of thought is this:If you`re going on some crazy around the world hike and potentially COULD end up with nomads in the sahara,miles from civilisation and want "emergency cash" without walking aroud with a diamond stuck up your ass go Rolex for that simple reason. EVERYONE knows Rolex! Just like you bring US dollars,not Mexican pesos or yen. And another thing:Patek is a top echelon luxury,Rolex isn`t really that. Patek,Audemars Piguet,Vacheron Constantin are TOP echelon. Rolex,Omega and Breitling for example are upper mid level,but not Patek level. PP is THE watch,but only if you`re into watches. For 98% of the world it`s Rolex that counts.They`re an "upper tier" brand and Pateks are absolute top tier watches. And any non limited edition,used watch are usually cheaper than new ones......

Guys - ROLEX WONT HELP YOU OUT OF TROUBLE BUT GET INTO TROUBLE in those cases you write about. If you get stuck in a poor and infamously dangerous country, Rolex wont help you out. Trying to sell Rolex to a bunch of people in Africa, South America, South East Asia or wherever else where you cant find a pawn or watch dealer, thinking that you would get a good chunk of cash for it is STUPID and DANGEROUS. A friend of mine, teaching English in Brasil, was robbed of all his belongings except for what he had on, such as his Submariner. An embassy would help him only by a ticket to get back home so he offered his Rolex to the staff at school. A few metres from the school when he left it in the evening he was mugged and lost his Rolex. I wouldnt advise you to take your Roly on a trip to a country where you can be robbed for a nice pair of shoes. The point of this video is what brands hold their value, not what brands are easy to sell to a bunch of dunces.

It is kind of a silly point to even discuss luxury watches and value together. Watches are like cars, they drop astronomically in value as soon as you walk out the door. Even Speedmasters can be had for almost 70% of MSRP at AD's. Used you can get for about half of MSRP. Only a select few watches such as Paul Newman's Daytona (or any vintage Rolex) will actually make insane resale.
