Learning why collective is spelled the way it is (which also helps us learn to read it!) can be a great launching pad for diving into a study about why collectives are critical to progress and how individualism promotes white supremacy.
When we study words based on their morphemes first, and then add a study of their phonology later, we are anchoring ourselves in meaning. This is rich, motivating word study. Breaking words into syllables doesn't allow for these connections to be made. Morphemes are not syllables, and written words aren't built using syllables.
This video looks at the definition of collective, how it's built (the morphemes are " col + lect + ive →collective "), the origin of the English bound base "lect" and it's alternate, other words in the immediate family, what the letters are doing, and how relatives can help us spell a word. Additionally, there's discussion of assimilated prefixes, as the "col-" is an assimilated form of "com-".
(I'm unable to use the angled brackets typically used to discuss graphemes here, so instead I'm using quotation marks.)
