@@icarian553 free education would still not give equal education. Private institutions will still have better faculty with better compensation and charge a tuition. Even on supposedly level field, UC Berkeley degree is worth a lot more than UC Santa Cruz. The only thing free education will do is overburden the already struggling system with too many people who got duped into thinking that college education is there right thing for everyone. I've seen too many people getting degrees they had no chance of using and no plan for their future. Free college will just lead to job market problems. Anyway, what we need is education reform with emphasis on careers through OJT, certificates, and accreditations. That way we can directly incentivize people with free tuition and job placement for the things there country actually needs instead of churning out dance, social studies, and English literature majors. There's no way you could've taken dance classes at a local studio or attended a book club to feed those hobbies. Could use more programmers, engineers, entrepreneurs, etc.

You need to remember that these bribes were handled as charitable contributions(they reduced the taxes that the bribers had to pay,meaning part of their bribes were paid by people on the bottom of the economic scale)if you had a real clue as to the scams available to the wealthy for shifting the tax burden onto the very poorest it would make everyone take up arms.

@Derek Spencer Not always. I went and I'd say 95% of the kids there were accepted based on Legacy status or donations. The other percentage were there based on fulfilling quotas. It's true that med school is hard, but someone of average intelligence can get through it fine. The courses are not necessarily more difficult than undergrad...it's just more busy work. So wealthy parents end up hiring previous students to help with coursework or get past coursework materials. Sure...an idiot can't do it, but the average person can. They are holding maybe 4-5% of the spots for truly deserving, intelligent people. The ones that are brilliant enough to advance research in some way.

The great majority of students attending top tier universities earn their degrees and a majority of them are in fact very well educated and they make significant contributions to their society. I think you are painting with far too broad of a brush.

There’s more kids in colleges and universities now or who have already received college degrees by using these types of methods, than there are families caught in this FBI sting. Then there’s the legal methods that give people with white privileged and wealth and extra leg up in the admissions process. People already knew about the legacy deals etc. but this is different. This is parents paying for fake certificates and results, to help their children get into prestigious colleges. This also involved actually creating fake sports records to allow their children get in to prestigious schools through coveted sports scholarships. This is different from the legal forms of legacy bribery that has obtained for decades.

In these cases, the coaches accepted bribes to sell those spots to the highest bidders. The parents still had to pay full tuition. Since USC costs about $70k a year, Lori Loughlin probably felt she was getting a good deal, paying a little less than double (2 dumb kids = $500k) to guarantee her kids got into a school they weren't smart enough to get into the legal way.
