Old school videos are the best. Basic but cool. And I have no idea why but WTTM has always been my favorite Pink Floyd song 💗 When I was younger and first heard this song, I always thought it was coming from the viewpoint of God talking to me after reaching heaven. “Where have you been?...that’s alright we know where you’ve been” and “you’ve been in the pipeline filling in time” he’s running through what life is like...everyone telling you what to think, do, etc (as you said and others have written here) and my feeling, although not in the lyrics, is that it’s all a cycle and we are all part of the machine...and now, in the hereafter, you’ll receive the answers. Which is either a comforting thought...or a disturbing thought - depending how we look at the big picture. I’m not particularly religious at all, it’s just how it feels to me :) I know it’s a bit different perspective, but possible. I have not heard any interview stating what was in their minds while writing the song, but I rather like NOT knowing. Sometimes your own interpretation - whatever it may be - is the point. Music should make you FEEL, and feelings are not right or wrong :)

I'll never forget the story about the First & Only time Syd Barrett visited the Recording studio, unannounced, said Nothing and eventually left. I can't imagine what that must have been like for the band.

It's not a different version, it's just high pitched studio version, probably to avoid copyright strike by the band. If you look for the official video on their official youtube channel, it contains the video as well as audio in much better quality. I also very much recommend the demo version (can be found on youtube) if you've not heard it, it sound even more raw than the studio version.

Love your interpretation. For me this song feels like a first impression of getting into the society as a young adult.

I think you have to be very optimistic to find anything comforting in this song. I think you get it right, though, when you say it's about the music industry, as is the entire album. I think the song is particularly subtle when the Machine refers to that sense of cool rebellion ("You didn't like school, and you know you're nobody's fool") in order to encourage it and co-opt it to sell more records. Also, there's a sense that the Machine is self-perpetuating, because it creates its own raw materials. Each generation of pop music generates the dreams and fantasies that draw the next generation of musicians into the industry. I don't think this song particularly refers to Syd at all, but reflects the antipathy the whole band developed to fame and to the music industry.

@donaldb1 Yeah it’s just that one lyric that I felt comforted by a little bit, “where have you been, it’s alright we know where you’ve been” Like where have you been in life? What kind of hardships have you endured? It’s okay, where know where you’ve been, a sense of relatability, awareness, with that, I know it’s moreover the sinister perspective, haha.

Sounded like the Quad version. The film footage was used during the 1977 Animals Tour during the song performance on their circular screen. The film characters were drawn by Gerald Scarfe, who would do the LP for The Wall. Roger did not use Hignosis and Storm Thorgenson for LP art after the Animals LP. The song is much about Roger's views on the music industry and Syd's downfall. Roger is a self described Socialist ( but he's very rich)

Waters himself mentioned that both Have a Cigar and Welcome to the Machine are about the music industry, although one can make the case that the second fits perfectly to social life, in which one is seen as a cog in a meatgrinder. Grim stuff, but that's the point.

Saturdays was The song remains the same and Sundays the Who It was a great time.We would go see it a couple times a month.. Funny though I never got high for any of them..

I think the lyrics are pretty straightforward. Society tells us what to think, how to act and looks down on those that think for themselves. American politicians have even suggested that we NEED them to tell us what to think. Creative people hate being put in a box or treated like sheep. Creatives also want people to interpret their work for themselves. I know when I write a short story, or poem I want readers to connect with the material on a personal level. Pink Floyd had a tendency to expect their listeners to agree with everything they said, especially with their later albums. That's just my take.

A lot of what you are saying with regards to the music industry and not feeling ready for it could also be applied to Roger Waters. Up until DSOTM came out the band played more intimate gigs and then after that album everybody wanted a piece of them. Some of the lyrics point in the direction of Rogers frustration by it all. That frustration came to a head on the Animals tour (spitting in a fan's face) and in turn led to The wall where he wanted to play the whole concert behind the wall and have no real interaction with the crowd. Also the sheep thing, being told what to do and having people take what they can is the basis of Animals. 😁

Pink Floyd has stated that “shine on you crazy diamond” was the only “true” tribute to Sid, the other songs on the record were written from a broader perspective, even “wish you were here” which sounds like a true love letter to Sid has a wider reaching meaning than just to Sid, can the other songs be interpreted to Sid? Absolutely, not discrediting that interpretation at all

This is a cool animation and all, but this particular version seems to be played through some kind of effects and the sound is not as good as the original. I've seen this animation many times and it didn't have this hollow effect on it. So maybe you could find a better version? Love what you do here on youtube.

"We know where you been" "We told you what to dream". In my mind this is controlling big business record industry presuming to know what every bunting rock star wants, in the way they define the musical taste for the masses with the majority of the shit they churn out for public consumption. I think lyrically Roger is saying that, to the industry he and/or Syd was nothing more than just another bright-eyed naive talent to be molded to the commercial money-grubbing whims of corporate music. Just another prefabricated toy ("we know where you been") to be molded for maximum profits. Boy were they wrong! Also, btw, the little footage there was not a 'video' for the song as such, as videos were more or less nonexistent when this album was made. It was and is - for anyone who's ever seen floyd and or Gilmour live, background imagery that is shown on the massive screen that usually accompanies their live performances when this song is played. I've seen floyd twice, Roger twice, and Gilmour once, and am very familiar with this footage.

Ok. Couple points.... Video was irrelevant. Audio (on this end anyway) was horrible. But of course it's a great song as we all know. Lyric analysis.... I've always perceived "The Machine" as the music industry in general. They have bands, and they promote those bands and musicians as Demi Gods. Now you, the new wanna be musician are being introduced to the powers that be in the industry. Those people at the top are not interested in who you are or what brought tou here. They see everyone in a very generic scope. Yeah, yeah.... We know you got a guitar a practiced alot. We know your mom didn't like it. We know you want to be the next Jimmy Hendrix. We know you want to be rich. They marketed the Rockstar" so the next generation will desire to be that. I think why Pink Floyd wrote this song was because they actually WERE different. They had different ambitions. This feels like mockery in my minds eye. But once again, Pink Floyd was a bit vague and left it open to interpretation.
