@Dennis Cash Me too, I'm a grizzled nearly 58-year old metal fan, but I've been a Floyd maniac for many years, and this song brings tears to my eyes from the last verse onwards, despite the fact that I've listened to it possibly a hundred times. Possibly my #2 Floyd song after Comfortably Numb. Then again, Time strikes a chord... Run Like Hell is great... Learning to Fly is a fantastic song... I can't ignore Sorrow... Us and Them really moves me... Let's face it, Pink Floyd is an amazing band that can tug on emotional strings you didn't know you had. Iron Maiden is my #1 band of all time, but Floyd may be my #1.1. The emotion in David Gilmour's vocals and guitar playing are unprecedented and unequalled.

One of my faves from album. This was definitely Pink Floyd ‘lightening up’ after roger left - it had become too much about the war. Thematically and even structurally it is very similar to The sound of Silence (Simon and Garfunkel) - apart from the killer guitar riff of course :)

You guys should definitely check out the live in NYC 1988 version (sometimes referred to as the Delicate Sound of Thunder version, although that's not entirely correct; the version on the DSOT CD is a re-cut of the concert version for some bizarre reason. The actual concert video is the best). It has a 4 minute guitar solo, rivaling Comfortably Numb, that blows the studio version out of the water. Good quality uploads are "Pink Floyd - On The Turning Away - Delicate Sound of Thunder" by DavidGilmourHD, "Pink Floyd - On The Turning Away (Live)" by Miguel Freitas and "Pink Floyd - " On The Turning Away " 1988" by HDPinkFloyd. Other great songs from AMLOR: Yet Another Movie (Delicate Sound of Thunder), and Sorrow (Pulse; unfortunately, most uploads of Sorrow from the Pulse concert are very poor quality. There's one upload with hq audio, but it has nature footage instead of the concert: "Pink Floyd - Sorrow" by Indeepsilence, with 29 mil views).

Besides the brilliant musicianship, that amazing guitar, the epic productions, the incredible live performances; there is one thread that has run through floyd's work almost from the beginning. Something no one ever really talks about. It is an indisputable, unmistakable sense of humanity. It's always there. It is what separates them from the rest of the pack. While other bands are singing about getting high, getting booty, getting wasted, or breaking up. Pink Floyd opens their 1973 Masterpiece Dark Side of the Moon with "Breath, breath in the air, don't be afraid to care". This sense of empathy humanity and caring permeated their music to the very end. In this respect it never really mattered who was at the helm, Waters or Gilmour. The message is always there. It is one of the intangible things that imbues their music with so much power, and has kept it so relevant over all these decades. So glad you pointed this out, Andy. Good call!! "All alone, or in two's The ones who really love you Walk up and down outside the wall Some hand in hand And some gathered together in bands The bleeding hearts and the artists Make their stand" - Outside The Wall, Pink Floyd

I almost didn't like post-Roger Floyd at first, since it lost some of the angst and witty lyricisms, but that quickly changed. They never lost the mellow space-y-ness and there are fun references to Roger's stubbornness. I usually play this song with the following other songs that to me have a similar feel. This is my playlist: On The Turning Away -> Learning To Fly -> Cluster One -> Poles Apart -> Marooned -> High Hopes

A couple of things - Nick Mason wasn't drumming on this track. Without looking it up, I can't remember who was now. DAMN!! What a guitar solo! Also, those beds in the picture were real beds. I have suggested this to many people doing reactions but no one else has done this. I was a Pink Floyd fan, but I was young and only knew the albums Pulse and Another Brick In The Wall. I was on vacation with my family, we had rented a house at this beach and I'd found this old cassette tape in a corner. I had taken my walkman (as a teen I would have died if I haven't it with me), so I just grab the cassette tape and we went for a walk. This beach has a river, so we walked upstream alongside it, the sun was already setting and this guy was standing on his dugout taking people from one side to another side of the river. I was listening to the tape and just thinking about that beautiful scene. The silhouette of the guy paddling his canoe against the sunlight, which also was reflecting on the water surface... AND THEN On The Turning Away starts playing. I remember crying because everything was so goddam perfect! The cassette tape was A Momentary Lapse of Reason - along with The Division Bell, my favorite albums. And, of course, this song is still my favorite one.

I've always felt this song was about the homeless situation, the weak, poverty as is hinted at by the sea of empty beds save for alone guy on the album cover. Powerful!

"dogs of war", and intro to "sorrow"... last song on this album. this a killer album, saw them twice in Atlanta for this album. I would put it with "the wall" and "wish you were here". not a damn thing wrong with" dark side", very well done.

Equating Pink Floyd's music with Charles Dickens' story of 'Scrooge' - now hear me out on this before you say WHAT? In 'Scrooge', we are shown the evil Scrooge being transformed by the ghosts showing him in his sleep all the problems and heartache that he has caused throughout his life and when he wakes up, he is a completely transformed person and desperately wants to do good in the world following his experiences that the ghosts have shown him. Now, substitute the ghosts in the story with a person listening to Pink Floyd's music. It affects the listener so much that he/she is made aware of the failings of us all and the sheer emotion of the music, that, after the Pink Floyd awareness experience, we hopefully come out the other end a changed person with a more positive outlook on life with a feeling of empathy ..... just like Scrooge did at the end of the story - in fact a changed man for the better, like a lot of people who have been through the Floyd experience and came out the other end with positive feelings!
