Ginger Baker - Drums. Jack Bruce - Bass, Eric Clapton - Guitar. Eric Clapton can be heard throughout on Roger Waters Pros & Cons Album.This album was released about a year after Piper At The Gate Of Dawn.All Jack Bruce's albums are fantastic. You've got so many great bands to discover from this era. I can only relive it through watching others reactions like yours. Pete Brown was the lyricist.

@@tommatthews1156 I guess I'm old as dirt but I saw Cream twice, the first time back in the day with Ten Years After opening for them, and the second time at their reunion tour at MSG. Also saw Clapton with Steve Winwood in Blind Faith, and 7 or 8 times with his own band. OMG! Glad you like it!!! Eric Clapton lead guitar, Jack Bruce bass, and Ginger Baker drums … quite the super group !!! Eric Clapton was arguably considered the premiere guitarist of the time , at least until Jimi Hendrix came along!!! Wheels of Fire is a great album, BUT Disreali Gears is a must listen. Songs to look for by Cream - Strange Brew, Crossroads, Tales of Brave Ulysses, Swlabr, Sunshine of Your Love, Outside Woman Blues, Cat's Squirrel, and N.S.U. … there are many more but these are great. They have a couple Live albums that are gold too. Envious of you discovering them for the first time …. have fun and enjoy. ***** Keep in mind with many (not all) of Cream's lyric's are of the poetic psychedelic type, which almost seems nonsensical at times, if that makes sense ???

They were called Cream as the three members Eric Clapton guitar, Jack Bruce bass vocals and Ginger Baker drums were considered the finest exponent of their instruments at the time. Jack Bruce was classically trained , but played jazz prior to rock and blues, Baker was a jazz drummer who was influenced by African rhythms Clapton was probably the first guitar hero having honed his blues chops in the Yardbirds and John Mayall's blues breakers. Non band member lyricist Pete Brown supplied the words.

@donaldb1

This song was written by bassist Jack Bruce along with his regular writing partner Pete Brown. Bruce also sang on this, as well as most of Cream's other songs, though Clapton and Baker both provided vocals sometimes. The lyrics might be slightly cryptic, but I take it the song is about a man whose girlfriend has just left him, by train. "You said no strings could secure you at the station." But then he meets another nice girl at a party, "consolation for the old wound, now forgotten." I like the way the song combines fantastic, psychedelic imagery with a very ordinary, slightly dreary, urban setting, "black roof country", "tired starlings" (perhaps because they've got nowhere nice to land).

I can remember hearing White Room for the first time, I was sixteen, a friend had given me a single - from the Netherlands weirdly - and it knocked my socks off. Never tire of it, the lyrics, the vocals and the instruments are all perfect. Your first Cream? Your first Clapton? Amazing. When I was young this was my favourite band by far. They shone briefly (4 albums over 3 years) but very brightly. Everything they did was incredible. They are sometimes said to be the first supergroup (though I don't know if the term was actually coined then). Although since then Clapton's fame has hugely overshadowed that of the other two, when the band was formed they were each individually famous musicians in blues and jazz circles. I think you can hear that there is no leader in this band. Okay, Eric Clapton is "lead guitar". But then you could say that there's also a lead bass (Jack Bruce) and lead drums (Ginger Baker). Each instrument is equally dominant in this "power trio". Live they sometimes ended up sounding like they were fighting each other for position and the results were amazing. On this song note comparatively early use of a wah-wah pedal. Clapton, along with Jimi Hendrix, was a pioneer of this. Like I said, everything they did was brilliant, but you might particularly like Tales of Brave Ullysses, Strange Brew, Born Under a Bad Sign, Politician, or Sleepy Time Time. But anything by Cream is going to impress you, though you might hesitate before trying Toad, unless you really like that sort of thing. It's basically a 5min drum solo (quarter of an hour in the live version!) That's not for everyone, but you have heard in this track that Ginger Baker is a special sort of drummer. Finally, I should say that a live performance is an essential part of the Cream experience. For this I particularly recommend their version of the Robert Johnson song, Crossroads. There are lots of versions out there, but try and listen first to the one that's on the album Wheels of Fire (the same album that has White Room on it). I think that's probably the best introduction to what it must have been like to listen to them in concert at the time.

First time I ran across the term supergroup it was regarding Blind Faith. So, Clapton at least.

Haven't listened to this track in so long. What surprised me was how dry and subtle the instruments were mixed, particularly the drums and it's still such a powerful sound without any need to drench everything in reverb like lots of other acts do.

I was lucky enough to see Cream live at their 2005 reunion show. Ginger Baker is the best drummer ever, the man was amazing. Always keeping in time, no matter what else he did.

What joy to witness your first time with this song. You made my day. MY first live rock concert at age 15, my parents' friends' kid I'd known all my life, a year younger, talked his uber-conservative folks into letting us go see CREAM, 1966, Anaheim CA. Ginger Baker instantly made me want to be a drummer, never mind I was a girl. Eric Clapton, all of them, were a revelation to my young ears. It was the beginning of a long career of witnessing the birth of rock, in person and in your face. I've seen the Who 9 times from '71 to now, and if you ever get the chance, GO SEE ROGER DALTREY AND PETE TOWNSEND, legendary live performers, before they are gone. Roger STILL hits the high notes and screams with all his heart in Love Reign O'er Me, Won't Get Fooled, and Who Are You?....just he always has. :D

Clapton is God graffiti started turning up back when he was with Mayall's bluesbreakers. The Yardies and Cream just made it more common. Ginger Baker, Keith Moon and John Bonham changed rock drumming forever. Opened up the door for Bill Ward and Neill Peart. No more banging on the twos. Jack Bruce was a phenomenal bass player and great vocalist. Cream came closest to the idea of 'everybody solo'. A friend used to have a band and whenever he had guests sitting in he would yell 'everybody solo!' They never did. Too bad, he loved the idea, a stage full of musicians all pouring out their best at once.

Pete Brown wrote the lyrics. He was a poet and alcoholic who spent some time in rehab in a white room with black curtains. His thoughts at the time were jumbled and vivid. Great song!
