"Low Spark of High Heeled Boys" is the next logical choice -- an incredible eery, jazzy, melodic sound unlike anything. Steve Winwood being a serious vocal talent in this band, as well as previous band Spencer Davis Group "I'm a Man" and "Gimme Some Lovin" when he was SIXTEEN years old... ! Then he was in Blind Faith with Eric Clapton, and later had a brilliant solo career starting in 1980 with "Arc of the Diver". Steve Winwood is such a class act.

He started playing in pubs with his dad and brother when he was eight. In middle school he was backing blues legends like Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf. My wife and I attended a small and intimate triple-bill concert more than two decades ago, and Traffic guitarist Dave Mason (whose fretwork we heard on this song) and his band were the third act on the bill. It was an on-the-lawn concert, and we sat about three feet from the stage. At the end of his excellently performed set, he asked the audience for a song to perform as his encore. We requested this song, and he PLAYED THE HECK OUT OF IT. His guitar defied physical laws by not instantaneously combusting in his hands during that song. If you get the chance to see Dave Mason perform with his own backing band, I recommend that you take the necessary steps to attend that performance...and make it snappy.

“Make it Snappy” you have to realize there is a genealogy in Rock, Steve Winwood was in the Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith, and Traffic! If you think of it this way, every band and or group has the “DNA” of other bands that you can follow and hear how an artist matured in their performance, style, creativity. To really appreciate Rock, and other genres, study the artists, like Jimmy Hendrix for example, he was with the acts like the Isley Brothers, Little Richard and then discovered by Keith Richard’s girlfriend and Chas Chandler of The Animals. Go back and listen from the 50’s thru the 60’s and 70’s to hear how the sound evolved. I’m just an old Boomer Music Nerd who was lucky to have grown up in those times. Rock🤘

One of my favorite songs! I saw them sing it live in concert and yes, they made it snappy! Jim Capaldi, the drummer, was an amazing musician, writer, and singer (although Steve Winwood sang for Traffic). Capaldi had solo albums and was incredible with his cover of " Oh Lord, Why Lord" with Eric Clapton ripping the guitar. Winwood is also known for his involvement in The Spencer Davis Group ("Gimme Some Lovin") and Blind Faith. Also in Traffic are Dave Mason and Chris Woods. Tight band and all incredible musicians in their own right. Thank you. I loved this reaction!

Traffic - Low Spark of High Heeled Boys. Stevie Winwood was 14 years old when he joined the Spencer Davis Group, and 19 when he joined Traffic, and sang and co-wrote this song. I would recommend listening to some Spencer Davis Group. Especially Give Me Some Lovin' and I'm A Man. Steve Winwood was a legend still in his mid teens.

That song was co-written and sung by the amazing Steve Winwood - who was (wait for it) 19 when that was recorded. He really made it snappy. Other songs? "Low Spark..." and "No Face No Name No Number" are a must, as is "Paper Sun". "Can't find my way home" (which I cover in my own gigs!) and "Sea of Joy" - both by Winwood's later band Blind Faith. And also some of the blue-eyed soul he did with Spencer Davis Group - "Keep on Running" (those vocals - from a teenager. Astounding.)

Stevie Winwood is one of those unsung rock heroes. He is a superb singer guitar player and keyboard player as well as a songwriter and a bit of a child prodigy. He was only 17 when with the Spencer Davis Group had massive hit with ‘Gimme some lovin’ His voice and his keyboard skills amazed everyone then. A. Few years later he formed Traffic and brought out the LP Mr Fantasy which blew us away again. I have seen this man live and he stands up with best of them .

Beginning in the 1980s, his solo career flourished and he had a number of hit singles, including "While You See a Chance" (1980) from the album Arc of a Diver and "Valerie" (1982) from Talking Back to the Night ("Valerie" became a hit when it was re-released with a remix from Winwood's 1987 compilation album Chronicles). His 1986 album Back in the High Life marked his career zenith, with hit singles including "Back in the High Life Again", "The Finer Things", and the US Billboard Hot 100 number one hit "Higher Love". He found the top of the Hot 100 again with "Roll With It" (1988) from the album of the same name, with "Holding On" also charting highly the same year. While his hit singles ceased at the end of the 1980s, he continued to release new albums up to 2008, when Nine Lives, his latest album, was released.Winwood was an integral member of three seminal musical ensembles of the 1960s and 1970s: the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, and Blind Faith.

Make it snappy, boys! Lead singer Stevie Winwood was 19 when Traffic did this song and he was already a superstar from his time with the Spencer Davis Group. I'd recommend giving "I'm a Man" a listen from those earlier years, then "Can't Find My Way Home" with him singing for Blind Faith, with Clapton playing guitar and Ginger Baker on drums. And then, jump to the 80s and listen to Winwood singing "Higher Love," which is a completely different, pop-driven song with energy and positivity all over it. Keep up the great work!

Growing up in the late 60’s and early 70’s in South Tampa we all loved Traffic. Other bands at the time like Blind Faith, Cream, CCR, Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention. Seeing Jimi Hendrix at Curtis Hixson Hall at 14 with best friends older brother I will never forget. Those were the days and I really miss those times. Only 3 main channels on tv, no computers, no cell phones but that would’ve been nice to have. Times were much simpler. Playing all day, fishing, baseball and listening to latest albums or 45’s of some of the greatest bands still popular today but knowing soon we were going to give in to the establishment and get a job, college or fight a unpopular war. Music was always there. Another real popular song was The Hollies song He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother.

Steve Winwood {lead singer/writer} is a name you'll find in a lot of 10 lists from the early rock days, he started his own band at the age of 14 called the 'The Spencer Davis Group', an incredible musician with the ability to play multiple instruments and influenced some of the bigger names in rock history.
