Alongside the early live performances of The Beatles, this is the most intense live concert audience in popular music history. As with The Beatles' case, the sound on this DVD is problematic because the crowd is matching the entire amplification system. The best "YYZ" on DVD is the Clockwork Angels tour version, which you can hear well, and the string section adds a nice soundscape compliment.

OK Guys.....I was a RUSH groupie in the mid 70's. Alex...you said you snuck up to the front when you saw them live? I sat 6 feet away from Alex backstage here in San Antonio, 2 nights, back to back. I still have my stage passes from 10-22-77 & 10-23-77. Of course, I'll never forget those days! They were serious musicians....they weren't party boys. They went straight back to their hotel rooms after the shows! Saw them even long before that with my first boyfriend when they first toured in 74\75 with their original drummer. I knew even then that they were GREAT and would be around for decades. ALL of them SO RIDICULOUSLY talented! SIX FEET AWAY from Lifeson on both nights!! I still pinch myself thinking about how great they were and how lucky I was to see them perform LIVE when they were still so young. The pictures of them on 2112 is exactly how they looked back then! This video of YYZ is great...the audience is totally synchronized! They really were/are one of the greatest bands EVER!!

One of the things I like most about Rush is how much they genuinely like each other. After 40+ years, they just have fun playing. You also used a phrase I've used many times describing them. Ever been to a concert that was so loud you couldn't hear anything? Such was my experience when I saw Rush in 1984 at an indoor venue just north of Chicago. Everyone stood on their chairs for the entire show yelling at the top of their lungs. We were on the main fl. about 20 rows back and were either in some weird sound vortex, or the mix was bad, or those giant amps were turned up so loud that individual instruments and Geddy Lee's voice all melded into one massive sound wave/vibration that was so intense that I'm sure affected wildlife in the area. I remember at some point jumping down off my chair just so the bodies in front of me could blunt some of the vibration that I was literally feeling in my teeth. The high energy of this crowd kinda takes me back to that. I always intended to give them (or me) a second chance, but never got around to it. The raw talent of these guys cannot be denied. Just wish I could have appreciated it more live.

@@mrheem44 You got it! Horrendous acoustics. Saw a lot of concerts there in the 80s and found mid main fl to be the optimum spot. But nothing helped for this show although I do remember being further stage right than I expected. A disaster. Haven't been there (for a concert) since they renovated it and re-christened it Allstate Arena. I can only hope they fixed some of the sound issues.

This is my favorite Rush concert on dvd, mostly for the excitement and energy the Rio fans brought to the concert. This was Rush's first time visiting Brazil, and it showed in the anticipation from the fans. There's a clip of man with his hands held together in prayer, thanking God for bringing Rush to Brazil (Priceless), as Rush opens with Tom Sawyer. Just imagine going 30 to 40 years loving Rush and then finally seeing them live. What I love about Rush live is there no dropoff in the song, in fact, I think they sound better live. To see the impossible, is believing (how'd they do that). Boys you have to do Natural Science soon, I'm just waiting to see your reaction to this epic song. I also think you should do Peart's drum solo live in Rio as well.

While touring Europe, they band got the word that they were very popular down there and getting thousands of requests to play in Rio, which surprised them. So they winged it and added Rio to the tour and went down there only to go through an equipment ordeal with rain during setup. So the band was a bit tense, which worked out okay since they put that energy to good use. The Rio fans were never expecting Rush to actually alter their schedule to show up. The people showed their gratitude.

Gratuitously long comment, but I'm old, so I'm entitled. LOL I saw them three times in the 70s, and still have my ticket stubs. I abandoned the band when they got past the Signals album, thinking they had jumped the shark. Within the past year a friend gave me her unwanted copy of the live DVD of the Snakes and Arrows tour. It blew me away! Their newer stuff is every bit as good as their older stuff, but they had grown up...and obviously grown up together. The music is solid, their instrumentation is solid, and they became even a more cohesive whole. The fun they have is just so obvious, and they love being both maestros, and goofballs!

Few comments, I was there in one of shows of this Brazil tour and I remember that Neil was having some problems with his electronics because of a big rain they got in São Paulo, which was before Rio, so maybe that's why we didn't hear the glass breaking noise. Also, Neil (and most drummers) will always have many drum sticks in very accessible bag during the show, because it is not unusual for a stick to break or even to fly of your hands. On the crowd, check soccer game crowds in Latin America and you will understand. Not only that, but this shows were their first time in Brazil, so imagine that we had never though we would see them live ever and suddenly they were right there, it was really a dream come true.

Coming back to your reac after awhile: there is a super long interview/reflection they did (like over an hour) where the three comment on Rio. It was their first time in South America - despite the years. While playing that Rio gig, they were completely blown away by the crowd to the point of almost groveling humility. At the same time, it was the must adrenaline boosting performance of their lives...and, as is the case in such situations, it collectively just pushed them to that next level in performance. Imagine what that must have been like as the musicians on the stage.

The bass player was really into to it, which I LOVED!!! Also, who plays on a drum kit that huge!?!?!? I didn't know that there were no words to this song, seemed like a jam session, but it was fine.

Rush has been together for so long that they are having fun. About the recording - it had been bad weather in Rio, so they did not have time to do sound checks and stuff, so what you hear is what it was on that night. Also, the band had said the crowd was insane and that they fed that energy off each other. Just a magical performance the whole concert.

FYI the day Rush in Rio concert it was raining. From what I remember they didn't have a full soundcheck because it took so long to get to the stadium, so they plugged in and just let it rip. Also of note, according to the band, the recording mix took was difficult because the equipment was so primitive. I always thought this version sounded better live than other versions because it sounds so raw and heavy.

Neil did drop the stick ... but the fact that you couldn't tell makes the point - - he's awesome!! If you want to watch him nonchalantly play with his sticks, watch 'The Weapon' from their 1984 Grace Under Pressure tour. He's just flipping his sticks between beats waiting for the rhythm to give him something challenging to play. (You have to put up with the mullet haircuts, though). Yeah, it's bass heavy ... but WHAT A BASS LINE!!! And 'yes' more guitar sound wouldn't have been out of place, but what was there was spectacular!! Rush is ALWAYS great, but feeding off the power of this crowd really pumped them up. Great video guys ......

You're right about the "YYZed" pronunciation. I have heard Alex Lifeson pronounce it that way in an interview about the song. In fact, it is only in the USA that the letter "Z" is pronounced like "Zee". Most english speakers outside USA will pronounce it "Zed". Note that it is the same pronunciation in french. So, you can say that english-canadians and french-canadians are united by the Zed! 😉

Shawn Anderson he has like a thousand extra drum sticks in stick bags on his drums. If he drops no big deal. Just grab an extra. I’ve seen him drop it. Also the extra sticks are there for when he breaks one. Which he usually throws those into the audience.

I saw the " Roll The Bones " tour. At one point in the show, the stage became a three dimensional projection of a craps table and Alex lifeson was in the middle of the table ripping into a guitar solo with a guitar that had a mirror face on it, and the spotlights were reflecting off of it beaming around the arena. Rush were awesome live.

Saw this tour, and it was truly an experience, but the Rio version was just BONKERS! Never seen a crowd that manic for an instrumental. I can attest to the fact that they play that way ALL.THE.TIME. Consummate professionals, always. The sound mix is indeed a bit off - the reasoning for that is they didn't get a full, proper sound check before that show (prior show had been raining hard and the equipment truck(s) were late to this gig - they were still setting up some of the stage gear when the boys went on for a 'basic' check. So come show time, it was done raw and on the fly! It may not be the best recording, but it really does capture the energy of this crazy show and even crazier crowd!! You guys have been delving into some newer groups, thought you might give these boys a try - they're out of Hamilton (just outside of Toronto - hometown of our boys from Rush, well, except Neil, he's St. Catharines, which is the other side of Hamilton). They are Monster Truck, and they RAWK! Try this one on for size: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Zdeo-i6uw5g.html (song is Don't Tell Me How To Live) Keep it up guys!

I agree with you about triggering the “glass shatter.” To get technical though…that sound is actually Neil slamming a piece of plywood against a wooden stool. Look it up on the liner notes for Moving Pictures. In the section describing what Neil plays it also lists “plywood” along with the drums that he used at the time and the cymbals he used.

This version and a show of hands have the best yyz. Live in rio because of the crowd and a show of hands because of the velocity they play at, plus the drum solo that yyz smoothly transitions into.
